I had the thought today that โ€œI am having a bad dayโ€ immediately followed by โ€œI am feeling bad in this very momentโ€. This helped me come out of the mindset that when one thing goes wrong, the whole day is bad. It brought me back to the moment and I felt a sense of relief and stress lift off my shoulders. Although it was overwhelming and I had back cramps, afterwards felt really great. It felt calming to have my space cleaned. In my head, if my space is unclean, I am also unorganized, messy, and spending not enough time nurturing my own needs. Todays tip is short & sweet ๐Ÿ’œ โ€” What if Iโ€™m just not grateful? Well.. youโ€™re probably an asshole ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ Iโ€™m jk! Iโ€™ve been waiting to make that joke all week ๐Ÿค“ What I mean is that everyone has an equal opportunity of being grateful because itโ€™s a practice that anyone can do! Are you willing to be open to finding gratitude? Are you open to a mindset shift? Gratitude is not about what you have or any material things. Gratitude is about who you are and your mindset. Even if someone has โ€œmoreโ€ than you, thatโ€™s doesnโ€™t necessarily mean you have โ€œlessโ€ unless your mindset tells you that. Being abundant in gratuitous thoughts is all based on the quality of your thinking โœจ We donโ€™t have to have more to feel good. PRACTICING GRATITUDE ๐Ÿ’ซ #YEGRATITUDE โœจ For the month of November, I will be sharing helpful tips on how you can use #Gratitude in your daily life! Todays tip is on emotions vs. mindset ๐Ÿ’œ Emotions will arise and fall, but there will always be something I can return to that helps me feel calm: Gratitude. โ€” Today Iโ€™d like to tackle a myth that a lot of people have that: Gratitude = Happiness/Positivity. This is simply not true. You can be depressed, anxious, upset, angry, sad, or any โ€˜negativeโ€™ emotion and still find gratitude. Letโ€™s tackle why this is! ๐Ÿ’– Gratitude is NOT an emotion ๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿฝโ€โ™€๏ธ Happiness, sadness, upset, angry, ARE emotions. The emotion of happiness that we tend to chase after is an emotion that is usually based off of cognitions (thoughts) and not behaviours (actions). Hereโ€™s why. Person A says โ€œWhen I get that new job, I will be happy.โ€ They get the job. They think โ€œI have to move away from my family nowโ€ and then they feel sad. In this case, the emotion is not tied to what action happened, but instead to what THOUGHTS were ATTACHED to what happened. We often have a lot of attachments around words that are only there because of the neural networks (or thought patterns) that we formed around that word. Happiness is one of those words. We often form a set of ideas that surround what means to US to be happy. These are often in the form of attachments. Gratitude is a skill that can help you move from these attachments into a grounding mindset ๐Ÿ˜Œ Instead of chasing the fleeting emotion of happiness, try practicing gratitude. PRACTICING GRATITUDE ๐Ÿ’ซ #YEGRATITUDE โœจ For the month of November, I will be sharing tips on how you can use #Gratitude in your daily life ๐Ÿ’œ Todays tip is on why to ink it, not just think it! โ€” Starting a practice of gratitude is no easy task. Like anything in life, starting something new requires PRACTICE & PATIENCE ๐Ÿ’– It is so true that our thoughts shape our reality. The problem with trusting our thoughts to shape our reality with gratitude, is a problem of balance. When I was deeply depressed, my practice of gratitude was very reluctant until I reflected upon it. I would have thought โ€œI am grateful for _____โ€ followed by 100s of thoughts of โ€œIโ€™m worthlessโ€, โ€œI donโ€™t deserve to liveโ€, โ€œI just want outโ€, etc. The depressive thoughts outweighed my gratuitous thoughts! ๐Ÿ“ If you donโ€™t write things down, there is no way to easily ~REFLECT~ ๐Ÿ‘€ The only way I was able to truly see how much gratitude shaped my world was by REFLECTING!!! After 30 days of gratitude writing, I was ready to give it up. I was still miserable. When I took time to re-read my journal, I started to create awareness around being in the present moments thoughts vs. mindfully seeing the whole picture. When I was depressed, my perception was like staring into a mirror - all I saw was reflections of what I didnโ€™t like & it never felt good. Gratitude brought me awareness of how much I lived in my own head & turned it around so I could see the big picture of everything going on around me - not just in me ๐Ÿ’– I was able to find gratitude for things I held resentment for within myself. Todays tip is on starting to open our minds to what gratitude can be! ๐Ÿ’œ โ€” The general outline of how to write something down that you are grateful is to put it in words from your perspective. The best way to do this is to start by writing: โ€”> โ€œI am grateful for โ€ฆ [ Insert what you are grateful for here ]โ€ <โ€” ๐Ÿ“ Next we have to choose what we are grateful for in that moment or in that day. I recommend thinking about things that have brought positivity OR growth into your life. Here are some broad suggestions for things to write if youโ€™re feeling stuck on what youโ€™re grateful for.. these may help you open up your mind to specific things you are or can be grateful for: ๐Ÿ’– I am grateful for blue skies ๐Ÿ’– I am grateful for my health ๐Ÿ’– I am grateful for a roof over my head ๐Ÿ’– I am grateful to have food to eat every day ๐Ÿ’– I am grateful for my yoga practice / workout time ๐Ÿ’– I am grateful for having a safe place to sleep ๐Ÿ’– I am grateful for the sun coming out today ๐Ÿ’– I am grateful for the lessons I have learned ๐Ÿ’– I am grateful for [ Insert your creative outlet ] ๐Ÿ’– I am grateful for [ Insert person/petโ€™s name here ] because [ Insert why ] ๐Ÿ’– I am grateful for [ Insert a negative thing ] because it taught me [ insert how it helped you grow ] I hope these help you to open your mind to find things that you are grateful for today! โœจ PRACTICING GRATITUDE ๐Ÿ’ซ #YEGRATITUDE For the month of November, I will be sharing helpful tips on how you can use #Gratitude in your daily life! Todays tip is on setting a goal to practice gratitude & ways to keep track of it! ๐Ÿ’œ โ€” First off, if you want to start a gratitude practice, start by setting a goal. Choose how many things you want to find gratitude in daily. I recommend going with 1 or 3 things. Set your goal: โ€œI will write down [1 or 3] things that I am grateful for every [day or weekday].โ€ & write it down! ๐Ÿ“ Next, choose how you want to keep your gratitude journal. There are many ways to keep record of this practice.. here are a few suggestions: ๐Ÿ’– Get a notebook specifically for gratitude journalling ๐Ÿ’– Have a daily planner where you find a place to write something youโ€™re grateful for every day ๐Ÿ’– Buy a gratitude mason jar and notepad. At the University of South Carolina they did a study that showed that these capsules โ€œsignificantly decreased levels of three key biomarkers of inflammationโ€ ๐Ÿ˜ฑ HOW AMAZING! Todays tip is on why you should start a gratitude journalling practice! ๐Ÿ’œ โ€” Gratitude is a skill that we must cultivate. At first, it may feel very hard to find something in each day to be grateful for, but with time, it becomes easier. Gratitude brings a sense of light to my darker days. A longitudinal study by Wood, Matby, Gillett, Linley, and Joseph (2008) found that gratitude helps to fosters social support and aids in protecting individuals from stress and depression. โ€” Every weekday, I write one thing I am grateful for in my planner. This was a practice that I started as a school project for a Positive Psychology class. I spent 30 days writing down different things I was grateful for each day during a gratitude challenge! ๐Ÿ“ At this time, I was in a depression cycle. I thought it was hard to find something to be grateful for. Two weeks later, I sat down and read my gratitude journal. I was filled with this sense of calm. I was really just that I spent time reflecting. It made me realize that being in each day without any reflection made me feel as if every day was bad. When I took time to re-read how I really felt, I realized that those bad days werenโ€™t as bad as they seemed. Feeling all things fall this week! ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‚ To me this season brings healing ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ I see the autumn as a time to start letting things go before resting & replanting your seeds for the new year. This is the time to find balance between working & resting โ™Ž๏ธ #WinterIsComing in Canada! We had our first bit of snow this weekend in Toronto โ„๏ธ For me, the winter is a dark & cold time. It feels like being a literal seed under the dirt, planting my roots for what blooms next Spring.
