Insta Tutorial: Plank 101 ↘️ Plank is so commonly mis-practiced because the hips are either sagging down or piked up. I don't believe this has to do with the pose by itself, but rather with the transition between down dog and plank. Sometimes our down dogs are too short so we shift forward, we end up too tight and our hips stay lifted. Or alternatively, our down dogs are too sagging or pressing back so as we shift forward, our hips sag too. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Next time you're practicing plank, make sure you set up into plank to begin with to understand how long your down dog should be: ⏺Balls of the feet underneath the heels ⏺Shoulders over the wrists ⏺Go back into that downward facing dog ⏺Then as you come up into the balls of your feet, draw your tailbone to your heels and your ribs in as you shift forward into plank ▶️You'll end up into that nice protracted core in and tight plank pose ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Hope you find these tips useful! How to Flip Dog in 60 seconds ↘️ Flip Dog or Wild Thing is commonly practiced incorrectly to a point that it can cause wrist and shoulder pain. Through my years of practice and teaching, I've noticed that we typically find Flip Dog taught from Down Dog. When we do it from this pose, we tend to end up in a weird position that leads to the pain I mentioned before. That's why I like doing the following instead: ▶️Start from one-legged down dog ▶️Before flipping the dog, shift the shoulder over the wrist ▶️Come on to the ball of the foot that is on the ground ▶️Spin to the pinky toe edge of the foot ▶️Slowly begin to bring weight into the hand and foot that are on the ground ▶️Step the ball of the other foot behind you or off the mat ▶️Push through the hand that is on the ground as well as the ball of the foot and the pinky toe edge of the foot to lift the hips up ▶️Reach the chest towards the sky and the top arm up and over ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Give this a try and let me know if you feel a difference in your Flip Dog ⏺If you have any questions, leave a comment below and we'll tackle it together! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ➡️This video is a part of my *new* series Aligned Asana, where we'll be breaking down how to safely and effectively approach popular poses. How I approach verbal cueing 🔽 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Verbal guidance is key in #yoga and is one of the most important skills yoga teachers should develop - what we say has power as it impacts our student’s practice and bodies. Over the past decade of being a yoga teacher, the importance of cueing has stuck with me and I’ve focused on finding out what method works for me and my students. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The way I cue now is based on isometric engagement. This means that I cue based off counter actions or different parts of the body doing two opposite things to do one specific thing, engaging the muscles that support the joints. I go over the principles of my cueing on my @alo.moves series, Aligned Asana: Verbal Cues. You'll find that throughout this series (and a lot of my other series as well!) that my counter cues are constant and that I also go in-depth about what each action or alignment cue does for the body and what muscles they engage. I even talk about some popular alignment cues and why I don't use them and what I recommend you do instead. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Now, this is the way I cue. The reason why I share my way of doing it is that I believe that cueing is a very personal process and that the more ideas you’re exposed to, the better teacher you’ll be. After all, we are all students, right? My goal is to help you understand each yoga pose and what the best action is for the body when practicing it so that you can deepen your practice and teaching. But also begin to develop your own language around cueing asanas and alignment. What To Do When You Don't Want to Do #Yoga It happens! There are days when your yoga mat is your ally and your relief from a stressful day. And there are other days when the last thing that you want to do is move. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There's always the option of not getting on your mat (a completely valid option btw). But it's been the case for me that those days when you don't want to practice end up being the days where your practice makes the biggest impact. Yoga can be that way sometimes, offering you the most when you want it the least 😂 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So if you're having an "all day in pajamas" kind of day, here's a couple of things to try if you're looking to get inspired to unroll your mat: ▶️"Only for 15 minutes": It doesn't have to be an all or nothing situation. Practice for 15 minutes and if you're feeling like it, keep going. The trick is to get going ▶️Get your groove on: Put your favorite song on and start moving. There's no right song, enjoy yourself ▶️Jazz it up: Pick a new place in your house to practice. Or go outside. Should you teach a #yogapose you can't do? One of the most common questions that I see come about either on IG or from teachers who take my trainings is whether they should be teaching something they haven't quite mastered yet. Because we're yoga teachers, we tend to think that we must be able to do all yoga poses perfectly before teaching them. But in my mind, this is not the case. If you're someone who's on a journey with a specific pose and are working actively to someday get there, then it's okay for you to teach it. Just because you haven't perfected it, doesn't mean you can't teach it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What are your thoughts on this question?
