Raising kids isn’t easy but it pushes me to be the best version of myself. I’m not perfect, I lose it often and get extremely frustrated with myself when I raise my voice at my son, Sydney. Sometimes he doesn’t listen and we have complete communication breakdowns. But, I’ve come to realize that him being a good listener has to come from me role modeling it. From Thai Pop-Star to Yoga Teacher.. what a ride! 🎡 I was recently asked in an interview to describe what was it like making the transition from practicing on the side to pursuing #yoga as a career. I loved this question so much that I thought I'd share my answer here. I think it's something we #yogateachers face when deciding to pursue our passion and I want to share my story to keep it real for those of you who are undergoing this journey right now. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When I made the transition into teaching yoga, I was in the middle of a very expensive custody battle for my daughter (emotionally & financially). I loved my job as a singer but I knew that it wasn't a career that was conductive to raising kids. And so, I took the leap... and man, did I struggle. I've always known how to #hustle and although I was certain I made the right choice, it was a challenge mentally. I was feeling down on myself because I had just come from a very successful career in the public eye. And yet there I was hustling to make ends meet, sometimes teaching classes to 1 person, charging $10-$15 an hour and even driving all over the place to teach for free in exchange for experience. I remember I was questioning what I was doing all the time. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But I kept hustling. Now, 10 years in and I'm happier than I could have ever imagined. I get to make my own schedule, do what I love, share #wellness and I have the wonderful opportunity to help people in their journeys. So if you're sitting there wondering if this will ever be you, my answer is YES. Yoga can be your passion AND you career. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is my story and it is one of the main reasons our @bryceyogaschool trainings focus heavily on The Business of Yoga. I'm currently based in Los Angeles and although I love the city, I'm so happy I get the chance to travel to Asia a few times every year. Every trip feels like I'm getting back to my roots as I visit places that are significant to me. This time around, I had the opportunity to visit China for @yonion_yogafestival and I'm having a blast with my son Syd, while getting to meet so many amazing yogis and teachers. Did you know that my grandmother was from China? A large population of Thai people are part Chinese actually! If you're around Xiamen, come say hi! A lot of you know me from that viral @youtube video from years ago and although I’ve been around in that platform for a while, I never really used it myself until last year. And I have to say I’m loving it! Even though I’m loving my insta tutorials, I was so happy to share longer classes on my YouTube channel. A big request from you has always been beginner content so I created a 20 minute beginner flow, that also works for more advanced practitioners. Down time has always been a foreign concept to me. I've been working and doing my own thing since I was very young and to my mind, there are so many things to do in a day and so little time I couldn't fathom the idea of taking a break. But when life is trying to tell you something, it is seldom subtle and the thing I've been avoiding for most of my adult time became my reality. Right before my injury happened, I had so many things lined up: online classes to shoot, trainings to plan, my children to take care of. I made my plans but life happened to me and all of a sudden, I had to take a break... whether i liked it or not. And although I struggled with it at first, I've come to accept that life is wiser than I am and that it showed me a way of life that I never knew I needed. As it turns out, tomorrow is there for a reason and the world won't end if I hit the pause button on today. It's been a few months and I'm getting back to my busy schedule, but even though everything is back to normal I'm proud to say I learned a new trick: I now add "break time" to my weekly schedule. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Let's celebrate those small changes that make big differences in our lives. Lotus is such a wonderful pose. If you’re like me, you keep going back to the basics with this pose but I wanted to kick things up a notch and show you how to incorporate it into the #hollowback. Splits ARE hard! But they also feel oh so good 🥰.... when done right. Working towards #hanumanasana is a journey, much like preparing to handstand, and it’s important that you not only take your time in working towards them but that you prepare correctly to prevent injuries. I’m a fan of incorporating splits into my practice for a stretch and I came up with a 12 minute flow that really hits all the spots needed to work towards the splits. “Are you THE girl from THAT @equinox video??” It’s been 8 years and to this day, I still get comments and DMs asking me this question.. and I‘m always super proud to say that I am! I loved having this empowering opportunity where I got to express myself and my yoga. It felt incredibly liberating to be confident in my own skin, something that for so many years was not the case but that now I finally am. This video started a conversation and whether you love it or hate it, I still really value and respect all views. For me, it is a constant reminder of why I turned to yoga. And that is to attain freedom from the thoughts in my mind. No matter the direction of my physical practice, stretching or strong, it always allows me the opportunity to be present. Linking my breath and movement, I am able to bring my attention out of my mind and onto my mat. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 👉Fun Fact: I started my yoga teaching career at Equinox and now I'm back visiting while I work on my ACL recovery. Would a teacher training be helpful even if you don't intend on teaching yoga? The answer to that is ABSOLUTELY YES! A 200HR teacher training is wonderful for those of you who are really dedicated to deepening your understanding of the practice of #yoga. That could mean you want to deepen your physical practice or learn inversions and arm balances. Or maybe you want to immerse yourself in 12 hours a day of yoga. And that could mean anything from our two times a day practices or guided meditation sessions, deepening your practice of pranayama or studying sequencing. Maybe even the Business of Yoga. I find a lot of students who come just to deepen their practice end up really intrigued by the industry and even start teaching even though they didn't intend on it. So absolutely yes!
