Treatment means more than just handing over a prescription of pills, movement, or any of the other tools you have available to you as a health care practitioner. Treatment means being present, listening, relating, having empathy, and then co-creating a treatment path. That path may include helping them with everything from safety(food, housing, etc), to sleeping better, to making social connections, having surgery, finding pharmaceutical treatments, to moving differently to moving more/less, to psychological support, to finding tools to relax, and this list could go on. I can’t do all of these things but there are people in the community who can. It’s my job to actively listen and then get people to the resources they need. So often people have been in pain or sick for years and each health care provider they have seen has rushed them through. We've all heard the phrase "you can't pour from an empty cup". We know this. We know the importance of slowing down and self care. ⁠ ⁠ The thing that is hard is actually following through with it. I'm just as guilty! My brain never stops. I could sit and work for days. I love what I do. But, I also realize that the more I pause, the better whatever I am doing turns out! ⁠ ⁠ If I meditate, I get better ideas. If I take a bubble bath, I feel more grounded. If I dance, I feel more creative. ⁠ ⁠ It's especially important to take time for self care during the holiday season. It's a time that is meant for being present, for enjoying time with loved ones and for being cozy and warm! When you move your nervous system is giving you ongoing feedback. Are you listening? There are so many subtle cues like breath holding, jaw clenching, or bracing and over-efforting that tell you that the you may be doing something the nervous system is interpreting as unsafe. If this is the case, chances are you will not get the desired outcome. If your desired outcome is to decrease pain or increase mobility your nervous system is the captain of both of those boats. So what can we do? 1. Pay attention- regular body scans or check ins can help a lot with this. 2. Consciously read the signals- just because your nervous system interprets something as being unsafe doesn’t mean it is. If it is unsafe then listen and change your behavior. If it is safe but your nervous system got confused or had an experience in the past that wasn’t safe and now it is interpreting this one in a similar way then try following these steps. 3. Soften your breathing. Allow it feel easier while you are doing the activity. 4. Scale the activity back. Maybe doing back flips on the trampoline is too much. Maybe start with walking on the trampoline, then jumping, eventually scaling up to back flips as your nervous system tolerates it. 5. Soften your body. Being anti-colonialism does not mean being free from colonial attitudes.⁣ ⁣ Its sneaky. Think about it like junk food. If you grew up with chips, coke, and nerds, chocolate bars, and fun dip you are likely to still want those things from time to time. Even if you know they are bad for you. ⁣ ⁣ It is mostly unconscious. It shows up in our language almost like shadows of our old, die hard worldviews. Stuff like "Our indigenous population," "they need our help," and "some of my best friends are ________."⁣ ⁣ I know that I hold some of these unconscious biases. But I also know they are unconscious. Which means I do not know when and how they will show up. Which means people "calling me out" are trying to do me a favor.⁣ ⁣ I am not saying that white people need to hang their heads in shame and passively accept every accusation flung their way. But when people of color speak, make sure to listen.⁣ ⁣ Do not get defensive. That is probably your unconscious bias fighting to stay hidden away in the depths of your ideology. Pause. Consider. Reflect. You can explain yourself if you want to. Maybe what you said was taken out of context. But maybe it wasn't.⁣

I have been moving my body every sin

✨ M I N D B O D Y H E A R T✨. . I have been moving my body every single m’fckn day for 370 days. Each time I step on the mat I’m reminded of how much it’s a mirror. A reflection of the self-talk, the shame, of the way I wish I felt + of the way I actually feel in my body, my heart, in my mind + in my life. I’m learning to be mindful of what I mirror. I can force the moves, in frustration, or I can listen + move with love. . For me, it’s easier to ‘hold on’ than to ‘let go’. + this struggle to ‘let go’, in life, has been so clearly mirrored on my mat. I tend to over-engage + as a result my practice has primarily been all about striving + activation, no ease. Power Vinyasa with all the tricks. In retrospect I realize that I have sought extremes in my practice to work through, + balance, the extremes in my life. . But recently I’ve noticed a beautiful change in my practice. Where I have had trouble over-activating, I am beginning to learn to disengage. As a result I am finding ease in my movement + flowing in a way that makes me feel graceful. . My yoga practice has become the place where I commit to showing up for myself. I scan my body. I listen to what she is telling me + then I give her what she needs. + right now, THAT is exactly what it seems she needs....listening, moving opening, releasing. Again + again. .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Listen. Move. Open. Release. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This practice always comes back full circle — my healing has become my yoga practice has become my healing. These mats are magic when we consistently show up for ourselves — even when our minds are uncomfortable, even when our bodies are tired, even as our hearts are altered. ❤️
