My last holiday park family yoga classes for the season this morning and it's been so much fun as each class has been completely different and all dependent on who is there! This group were a mum and dad with their own older kids and another super tall, sporty young friend of their family who could benefit so much from yoga. They were the most respectful and lovely young adults who got so much out of the little bit we did. I hope they keep it up! The next class was made up of exuberant little lads who just wanted to play around and practise handstands and cartwheels. Whatever you want! I'm in!! 🤗🕉🙏 #thisisyoga #playtime

rocknroll_yogi. Here’s a mudra series that you don’t come across much in regular class

Here’s a mudra series that you don’t come across much in regular classes but which I use at the start of pretty much every Yoga Therapy session to see how my client is breathing. They are called the Sharira mudras (sharira means body) and they are an incredibly helpful way to connect with the breath and learn to send it to all areas. It’s by far best done lying down, and basically we’re just looking to send the breath into the area underneath the hands in each position. . Top left: we’re looking for movement of the belly, so that the thumbs and fingertips part slightly at the fullest inhale. . Top right: looking for a sideways motion of the ribs, up and out like a pair of bucket handles. . Bottom left: we’re exploring a motion towards ‘10 to 2’ on a clockface, up and out towards the shoulders. . Bottom right: the movement is subtler here as the lungs are at their narrowest point and the collarbones have little movement, but we’re trying to detect a slight lift of the bones as we inhale. . Try spending at least 10-15 breaths exploring movement concentrating on each area in turn, then see if you can release the hands and put it all together in one breath, filling up from bottom to top and emptying out the same way. Alternatively you can keep a hand on each of the areas you found trickiest - the mind-body connection means it’s so much easier to focus your awareness when you’re actually touching the relevant body part. . For a bonus round, grab a friend for a really lovely assisted sharira mudra: take Balasana (child’s pose) and have your friend put their palms on the back of your ribs towards your sides. Breathe ‘into’ their hands to explore all that lovely movement of the back body. Feels yum, and the combo of such a grounding pose with a caring touch and the deeper breath makes it a super calming thing tool when things are tough or stressy.
