In the case of crow pose (foundation pose for any arm balance and variations) you want to constrict the flow of energy to the lower body so you can more easily shift your weight against the force of gravity. The two major bandhas most helpful for this posture are mula bandha (the root lock) and uddiyana bandha (the upward flying lock) . . If you practice yoga to get better at the poses, you probably will. But if you practice to get better at life, then you definitely will succeed. - You may feel like you are flailing around on the mat and not particularly good at any of the shapes. No problem. Don't judge yourself by that. Let everyone teach you tools to live more peaceful life. If you find less reactivity and more joy then that's progress. If you find more forgiveness and less blame, that's progress. All the poses are just tools to help you learn the lessons you need to learn. - Even and especially in the life journey don't expect perfection. Expect to mess up, stumble and fall. Just because you are a yogi doesn't mean you will always respond with kindness and enlightened action. If you hold yourself up to some idealized packaged standard of perfection then you will always see yourself as a failure.
