Making the unconscious conscious will actually change your life, but how do we do it? Let's begin by paying attention. Start with your physical body, the most dense expression of you, and perhaps the easiest to sense. Pay attention to physical sensations as they arise. See if you can notice them without judging or labelling them. So, instead of 'ah, those are my tight hamstrings', see if you can simply notice the sensation, get curious about it. When you pause before making any assumption, you give yourself the opportunity to observe more, perhaps even noticing something that had previously escaped your attention. Yoga asana practice provides an amazing opportunity for this. As you move through each pose, notice the obvious and the subtle sensations. This is mindful movement, where we are giving all our attention to the experience we're having right now, this moment. Many people find that what starts out like this, on the mat, paying attention to your body, somehow finds its way into other areas of life, and beyond the physical experience. You find yourself tuning in, in a similar way, to your emotions, your thoughts, your reactions. So rather than considering your habitual patterns of thinking and behaving to be 'just me' or 'the way things are', you start to get curious, to explore a bit, to go a little deeper. Bit by bit, what was unconscious becomes conscious, and what you previously thought of as 'fate' no longer rules you. You're that little bit more free. 💙
