Why do you think it’s so difficult to eliminate or vastly reduce the imagery of poses and physicality? Do you personally struggle with this topic? .. Have you considered the many barriers to practicing that exist for people who may otherwise be interested in yoga but feel like the poses or the physicality aren’t possible for them? .. I love to DeConstruct every aspect of yoga practice not just the poses but the marketing too. I find it vital to look at all of it and an inherent component of a yoga practice. .. How many times have you heard someone say, I’m not flexible enough to do yoga or I’m not very advanced because I’m not strong enough to do a handstand? .. As teachers we know that flexibility and physical prowess are not required for a yoga practice and that neither are measures of advancement, so why do so many people miss that point and sometimes for a long time? .. We use imagery of poses or physicality almost exclusively to discuss and market yoga, so it’s no surprise that the public doesn’t know that’s not the point, and that could be why it can even be difficult to get the message through to a lot of long time practitioners and teachers. .. No answer is wrong or right, or better or worse. I’ve been there and done all of the things I point out so I’m asking out of a place of genuine care and interest and to be supportive to the community of teachers trying to work through the current landscape in an effort to do better. . @yoga.teacher.resource Would love your thoughts of course! . . #yogaphysics #modernyoga #yogaphilosophy #yoga101 #yoga #yogateacher #yogapose #yogapractice

What if I told you that yoga was highly exclusive and unsustainable in its current form? .. Would you know why and how? .. Would you have solutions to the injury issues? .. How about the exclusivity that happens when people see imagery of yoga poses that they know they don’t have the range of motion for? They may want to participate but they know there’s no way they can accomplish the technique they’ve seen in images used for marketing so they say ‘I’m not flexible enough to do yoga’. And they’re right! In the current iteration they’re not, and those who are, are getting hurt at pretty alarming rates despite what gets said or admitted to out there. .. And that’s just one of the exclusivity issues of which there are dozens more. .. There are some amazing people out there doing things to change this set of issues. .. Share with me your efforts to combat these issues in your classes, on your social feeds, in the way you teach classes, and how you speak about yoga? .. .. .. .. .. #yogaphysics #modernyoga #yogaphilosophy #yoga101 #yoga #yogateacher #yogapose #yogapractice

alexandriacrowyoga. First Posted 11.2016 - Social media is a funny two dimensional world.

First Posted 11.2016 - Social media is a funny two dimensional world. I am more than one image or one statement, I am a three dimensional, multifaceted human being. As blunt, raw, clear and honest as I aim to be with each and every post I put up, even I can be misunderstood. I posted a meme last week that caused more turmoil than I expected. I thought the underlying reason for the post would be obvious if the sum of my work and the entirety of what I speak about was taken into consideration. I was wrong. I am not one to shame people, or to ever be exclusive. I love yoga with a passion that cannot be denied if you chat with me in person. I love what it can do for people. I believe in it and that's why I teach. I believe it to be something that can work for anyone regardless of class, age, gender, creed, ethnicity, you name it, to me the door is open. That said, the system at large is broken, especially the educational system and its leading to some sad effects. There are a lot of people paying for trainings that are sub par and feeling trapped about what to do to educate themselves further after they've already shelled out their savings. Students and teachers are injured far beyond what is reasonable. The misinformation about yoga, the poses, and on and on is heart breaking to me. The meme I posted was curated, it was just a snippet of the full chat that actually ended in my friend offering to help her client with TT information if she was so inclined and her client left happy and pleased. It wasn't intended to put that girl down because that's not even what happened. It was meant to show how the industry is leaving holes in people's understanding. How people can take a TT at this point with no practice under their belts and the programs will happily take their checks no questions asked. Teacher training is a big decision, I take calls from all the students who want to sign up for training to answer their questions, make sure they know the curriculum, and to make sure they feel the program is right for them. The meme aimed to show how that is not the norm anymore. I think this is worth a blunt honest chat, but to do that well, you'll have to find me in the flesh.

Our old patterns, stories and ways of functioning in the world don’t go down without a fight. It’s amazing the ability of the human mind to avoid being here with what’s here, when what’s here is uncomfortable. We are so dang good at attaching ourselves to what is familiar when we are afraid of the unknown. But at some point we’ve got to ask this question: is my behavior holding me back from my next evolution - my next Upsurge of self? What we are transmutes into every relationship, connection and interaction that we have. Therefore we each hold huge responsibility to continue evolving and becoming and growing and sharing from a space of love - because our energy transmutes to others and we are responsible for what we transmute. I can’t think of a greater responsibility. #yogateacher #yogaphilosophy #yogastudent #ytt #yogateachertraining #asana #playfulpractice #loveandalliscoming #movement #movementculture #radgirlscollective #travelbali #bali #indonesia #travelmore #wanderlust #armbalance #yogaphotography #yoga #yogapractice #beinghuman #yogaeveryday #canonphotography #yogainspiration

I have no problem being wide-eyed and utterly attentive in the sweet, lovin’ arms of nature. ~ But how how HOW to carry this super power outside of national parks? ~ Look at the richness of this moment . Right now . The details of your surroundings . The beings around you. The feelings in your body . The movement of your breath . There is so much happening RIGHT NOW. How are you perceiving it ? ~ To this day, my favorite quote is ‘there are no ordinary moments.’ SO no matter how boring bumper-to-bumper traffic or automated phone customer service may seem, I try to hold that in my heart. . . . . . #reunifyyoga #sandiego #movementsbeginwithin #sandiegoyoga #yogini #oceanbeachsandiego #hillcrest #powerofnow #beherenow #sdlife #yogaphilosophy

Do you ever wonder what it really means when you are chanting OM in your yoga practice? I really like this explanation in Yoga Sutra book 1, number 28, in my copy of Enlightened Living by Swami Venkatesananda . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ⚡️OM is the eternal cosmic sound that is heard in all natural phenomena. ⚡️Repeating OM, with inquiry and contemplation, saturating your entire being with the vibration of this sound, is the reality of God. ⚡️Chanting OM turns consciousnesses inwards, away from outward distractions. ⚡️ #yogasutras #yoga #philosophy #yogaphilosophy #pantanjali #om #sound #vibration #meditation #yogateacher #learning

"The mind is everything. What you think you become." - BUDDHA. . . Inspiring #quote from #buddha who states how the mind is everything, and what we think we become. “Excuse me”? The vet and I looked at each other in momentary silence. 😶 The Girls have made more visits to this room in the last 13 weeks than in 13 years of life. As we turn into the road, Bowtie shakes and pants. Blaze shows the whites of her eyes. 👀 I can’t tell if is the memories of vaccinations, operations or being called “cute, old ladies” so many times. 👵🏼 Now, Blaze is passively aggressively slumped on the ground, being thwarted in attempts to avoid neck shaving and blood taking. Bow cowers under the chair, paws crossed she is invisible. 💉 The vet whispers again but this time enunciating “she is overweight”. 🤭 .. 😳 “Why are we whispering”? I wonder if I should block Blaze’s ears. “Because people get offended.” 😐 “What about the dogs”? The vet and I looked at each other in momentary silence. 😶 Ahimsa (non violence) and Satya (truth) .. the tangle of what to say when, to whom and how honest to be. Is it kind to be cruel or cruel to be kind? The conundrum within the yoga community or perhaps just for me. How about a bypass? Perhaps the easiest course of action when speaking with some one holding their dog like a baby. ☮️ For non violent communication, Sanskrit scholar and yogi, Hareesh Wallis suggests before speaking, establishing what it is the truth and then choosing to speak only objectively “Your dog is overweight by 6 kilos and statistically has 10% greater chance of diabetes”. This being inarguable (unless you are a stat expert) and less offensive than whispering your dog is fat.(https://hareesh.org/blog/2018/2/28/near-enemy-8-speaking-your-truth). Alternatively speak truth subjectively. No way here. 🕉 Kudos for the Vet doing his best under trying circumstance with a first world problem, melodramatic person and 2 oversensitised dogs. 👍🏼 The dogs scurry out the door. In their wake, a waiting room of dogs. The nurse shouts out, “such a cute pair of old ladies”. 👵🏼 Okay, a whisper can less offensive in certain circumstances.

New blog: You can’t tell from the pose if someone is an advanced yogi!😲 I’ve read a lot recently about how pictures of advanced poses distort the idea of what yoga is about - much of that is fair. But those discussions often lead to bashing of fancy shapes and that some teachers don’t teach asana x, y or z🤔 Obviously I like arm balances and inversions; my practice informs my teaching and building strength to move with control and awareness is important to me. If those are present, the range of motion is there, I have no objections to making shapes that look fancy. Just build the skills first, don’t just throw yourself into them hoping for the best! In the blog, I’m looking at how these fancy poses can be yoga by looking at how the eight limbs apply. To answer the question: yes, I’m more advanced, but that’s not because of the shapes I can make - it’s because I can achieve stillness of the mind. And no picture of me in a pose shows my practice, they are merely illustrations. Link to blog in bio - thoughts welcome! #yoga #yogaphilosophy #yogapose #asana #morethanasana #yogagoals #yogainstructor #londonyoga #londonyogateacher #londonfitness #yogablog #control #stillnessinmotion #movingmeditation

Rama ~ our newest yogamat. The luck of a ship depends on how we call the ship. In other words the succes of any business depends on what kind of sound (value, vibration, mood) you put into it. • • RAMA, lord Rama, in his epic teachings, teaches humanity. Therefore having to come to Earth as one of the main Avatars, he came in the form of a pious King playing the role of an ideal person, while being God, in order to teach people nobility, honesty and self sacrifice. Knowing how people tend to forget about this. With calling this yogamat Rama, we hope to give an intention to you for your yoga practice. And that when you step unto your OHMat you remember that the ship (the body) , sails on vibration and that a healthy body serves the Soul with the teachings we received from lord Rama. ♥️✨♥️✨♥️✨♥️ #yogamat #ohmat #yogaintention #yogalifestyle #yogafashion #yogacommunity #yogaposes #yogateachertraining #yogateachings #yogafilosophy #yogaphotography #yogaphilosophy #yogamom #harekrishna #ramasita #yogajournal #yogablogger

I have been having a lil battle in my mind for a while now about who I want to be and how I want to show it, but then I realised I already have every single thing I need that makes me exactly who I am and I’ve never felt so empowered. I want to fully step into that and completely let go of the fears that come with it. Ofc I’m terrified and completely unsure of what’s to come, but then I come back to the way it feels to just be me and it makes it 100% worth it. ❤️

Stepping outside the comfort zone of ‘This is me’ We can get so attached to a limited view of our selves; ‘I am this’, ‘I do that’, ‘I would never...’, ‘I can’t...’. All those stories we are conditioned to believe, from what we have been told, attaching to passing thoughts and feelings as definitions of how we are. When the lovely @toilevintage asked me to help model some of her amazing new collection of vintage clothes, I noticed a whole range of habitual stories arise, from ‘how awkward I feel’ to rising anxieties about how I might look. All of which, of course, is both surface and constricts. As if I am this body, this face, this hair, this or that emotion. And of course I had a really fun day, and all the projections of my mind of how I would look or be perceived were just that, and not reality. And this is why I practise and teach yoga. It has always offered me a practical and philosophical guide out of these spirals of the mind. Meditation, both in stillness and through the movement of asana, offers a reset, a path out of habitual patterning, a reminder of impermanence in the most liberating way. Notice today what little, insidious stories, internal dialogue arises that limits you. Can you step back from it, without judgement, and observe that it is a story, a thought, and not you? It may not even be your thought, but one imposed on you. Can you respectfully give it back to the person or social conventions that have given you this view? What would you like to do or what could you say ‘yes’ to that you may habitually limit yourself from exploring? Allow a positive intention, a sankalpa, to arise from your heart right now; what quality do you need to support you in allowing yourself to be free of limiting thoughts or feelings? Bring that into the present and ‘set it’ in your consciousness; ‘I am..., I am..., I am...’. And know that this is constantly shifting, that you can adapt and move, you can change, you are free and limitless. #vajrasatiyoga #centredspace #energybody #yogaoffthemat #stepoutofyourcomfortzone #changingpatterns #sankalpa #beyondasana #yogaphilosophy

Trust in what feels good, whatever you are drawn too and pursue it. No matter what others think, at the end of the day you have to be happy and fulfilled only with yourself so let’s make choices that will point towards that direction. It was so hard for me to leave behind my career as a Molecular Biologist, really. My ego had that inner talk of telling me how I was slacking, how I should be getting my PhD, how all my classmates are already finishing it. But to be fair, it feels damn good to listen to my heart, embark on a solo travel journey, discover and apply yogic philosophy in my daily life. 🔴The Ahimsa Project 🔴 This week we’re talking about ahimsa towards our oceans and seas - I’d like to talk specifically today about products for people with periods! We use 10,000 - 11,000 tampons in our lifetime. It’s estimated 2 billion are flushed (just in the uk!) every YEAR! (Please, stop flushing them! They end up in the sea). Although we have sewerage and filtering systems, they don’t work perfectly - it’s estimated 6% of litter on Britain’s beaches is from our homes. (Apparently, women in Europe are much less likely to flush - thank you!) 🔴 What about sanitary pads? Guess how long they take to decompose. Now guess again! 800 years! 😱 We have to switch to something sustainable. 🔴 Did you also know that in regular tampons and pads there are loads of chemicals?! Rayon, dioxin, chlorine, fragrance, BPA. 🔴 So what’s the alternative? Luckily there’s loads. 1. No. 1 has to be a reusable silicon cup - it’ll last years, is really simple and much easier to use than you think. It seems scary but there’s guides on how to use it and once you get used to it it’s fine (for the majority of people). Look up @rubycup or @mooncupltd for example. 2. Absorbent underwear - can hold the same as 1.5-2 tampons depending on the type. I use @shethinx and they’re really great. Check out their page for answers to all your FAQs. There’s also @knixwear. 3. Reusable cloth pads - check out @babipur or @earthwise_girls. 4. If you tried all of those and it’s not working for you - there’s natural cotton, plastic free tampons from @im_ohne, @natracare and @totmorganic. 🔴 Any more recommendations? Let me know! 💚 Want to join the Ahimsa Project? There’s still time to jump in - one week to go. You just need to follow all of the hosts and sponsors (see the comments) and then post telling me - what does ahimsa mean to you? Or how do you use it in your life? Use the hashtag #theahimsaproject2019 - and you could win some awesome vegan, eco prizes (described in comments!)

Laughter and humour to me are the most important spiritual activity we can do. Yes I follow the 5 virtues of Buddhism as well as observing the yogic yama's and niyama's and these are both spiritual paths. However, none of them include humour or laughter. Laughter is something that is pretty much unique to the human species and is a divine gift. It comes from deep within the sole of an individual. Laughter has the power to change a moment, an hour, a day or even your outlook for the week. Laughter can turn the most stressful situation into a tale of joy that will always be remembered and the story shared. Laughter allows us to forgive ourselves in our mistakes, and, in turn forgive others. Laughter creates instant bonds and lasting friendships. Laughter gives space for love to grow strong. The happiest couples I know are always laughing together. A spiritual path should not be a solemn one, it should be one of joy. For me, laughter and humour should be the most practiced skills of anything. #lovelaughlive #laughter #yogaphilosophy #yogalife #yogawisdom #yogi #igyoga #igyogafam #igyogacommunity #dynamicyoga #vinyasayoga #armbalance #lotus #humour #yogaeveryday #yogainspiration #yogacommunity #yogadude #yoga #yogisofinsta #yogisofinstagram #yogateacher #mindfulness
