Ustrasana, camel pose, with bolster under the knees 🐪 . . Deep thanks to @atma_path for sharing this variation from Geetaji, taught at RIMYI 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽. You inspired me, Lorenzo! Thank you!! ⚡️💜 . . So: what was it like? Fantastic, in a word. It gives a very different sense of the pose. . Ustrasana is probably the first significant “dropping WITH gravity” backbend learnt in Iyengar Yoga. It’s constitutionally different from the belly-down backbends where we learn to lift from the floor, against gravity (Salabasana, Bhujangasana, Makarasana etc). This variation heightens (tish boom! 🥁) the sense of arching back and experiencing a controlled falling in space. . I had to work hard to keep the pelvis and front thighs forward. The body wants to drop: resistance has to enter the picture. . I found that an amazing sense of lift in the back thighs could be accessed. This area of the body was more present in my consciousness in this version. . It’s a spacious and light-filled variation that awakens different aspects of the pose than normal. . . BACK IN THE DAY... We had a pretty hilarious Friday night dinner. Our friend’s 11 year old was peppering us with questions about life “back in the day” as if we had lived in prehistoric times!😂 You know, before Nintendo and cell phones. One of my favorite questions was whether it was true that ice cream was served in drug stores. I did not experience that (I’m not that old!) but yes, people used to enjoy sodas and ice cream at drug stores which had counters and seating. I did experience phones, like the one pictured, Wherever the phone was “stationed”, that’s were you had to take your call. We walked to school—that seemed to horrify the kids at the dinner table. 😂We walked everywhere really, all the time, and even alone.🌸 What we did have, that kids today don’t seem to have, is time. We had a lot of free time, to explore, to discover, to disappear and to fantasize. We made up games, played imaginary characters and generally were able to “get lost” until dinner. We had some homework but not hours and hours of it. We had a lot less structured activities My only structured activity at around age 11 was a weekend ballet class. We actually had enough time on our hands to get bored—which I think is important. Summer camp (and I did not attend every summer), was the most structure that I ever experienced during the summer. Otherwise, there were only occasional outings. Summer reading was a BIG thing. 🌸 The current times and it’s pace makes it difficult for everyone, to just stop, slow down and actually enjoy their lives. There seems to be a lot more stress and anxiety in children today. They also have a lot of pressure to “out-perform” their peers. It’s crazy. We all have different gifts. Certainly, it takes time to figure what those are, but the schedules and activities that some of these young kids have are nightmarish. I feel for them. A lot of creativity can come from stillness. If we can be still at a young age, we will spend less time “undoing” all of the toll that stress has done to our minds and bodies later in life. Since time is not built-in as it was before, we have to take it. It’s a luxury. Take. Time. ~~~~ Like back in the day....

Self-paced (yes, this means my posts are late 😂) Day 3 of #thankfulforyin and I choose one of my favorite standing #bikram poses (I love to break the rules 😎🤘🏼) which is visually the same as yin #banana or #crescent stretch if done while laying on your mat. I love to #sidestretch and feel like a big beautiful cat in this pose 😽. The bikram standing version felt right for me. Today I am grateful for many things but two that immediately sprang into my mind are: 1. My cat, Hazel. 😻And 2. My brain 🧠. I adopted Hazel this very week, 6 years ago. She was malnourished, anxious and in heat. Today, she’s round ⭕️, at peace and spayed like her human mama. 😉❤️ I am obtaining a #graduatedegree and attend class every other weekend. I awoke to Hazel’s heavy weight purring on my chest this morning. I’m thankful for having this gift of a living thing to wake up to. And for the feeling I have by furthering my education. The rust is flaking off my brain as I begin to think critically and creatively. Life is good and I’m feeling brilliant, worthwhile and beautiful today. There is one of you. Only one powerful, messy, indecisive, flawed, frightened, fierce and incredible human that is you in a universe of billions of other humans. Arriving to teach this morning in what now sadly seems to be, California style. The blaze of the Camp Fire is apparently now 50% contained as people continue to work hard to quell it. The air quality in the Bay Area has been abysmal through the week and has believably dropped to levels worse than Beijing and New Delhi. The forecast is said to vary from Unhealthy to Very Unhealthy today so stay indoors and use an air filter if you can. Definitely use a mask outdoors.
