And how to get them deep and beautiful. This does go against the very morals of yoga BUT us humans want to test our limits and see how far we can go. (Me included) Problem is we all get so caught up on being as open as possible it seems ridiculous to most that strength actually helps flexibility and most important a HEALTHY back is one that’s not only mobile (notice I use mobile not flexible 😘) but strong too. Adho Mukha Svanasana, Downward Facing Dog. 🧘🏼‍♀️ Did you know that this pose is actually categorized as an inversion? It’s true! Because your head is below your 💛 and your hips are lifted, the pull of gravity is reversed and fresh blood flows, which improves circulation. Because it is not a full bend or fold, this pose does allow for slight abdominal compression by drawing the navel into the spine, which aids in digestion from compressing the organs in your belly. Stretching the cervical spine and neck all the head, but most importantly your mind, to relax! 🦋Reducing anxiety and promoting better posture. . One of my favorite variations is taking this pose with the wall ropes crossed behind my back, and the heads of my thighbones, allowing me to find greater length and taking the pressure out of my hands. 👐🏼 . Then there is no need to practice meditation; we will automatically be meditating always.” ― Swami Satchidananda, The Yoga Sutras With the world today in a constant state of flux over body autonomy rights I’ve had to take several deep breathes. Some how most people have separated the issues like food, medicine, and female reproductive rights into different sides of the same coin. Fear mongering, lies, fraud, and segregation divide humanity now on these very issues that are all the same. We are free. Of free will. My body is my choice. Our institutions built to protect and nourish us are now purely capitalistic organizations that care only about the bottom dollar. Carcinogenic compounds in our food, cancer in our children, farming and torture of earthlings for our food , fashion, and cosmetic industry. All so a few can make more money. Chemicals on shelves and parents rushing to buy the easy snack when it’s slapped with the organic label not realizing that it feeds cancer cells or contributes to the common problem ADHD. Marketing and industry over reach is seeping into everything our world is about. This is the storm. There is no calm in the external world for me. So as of late the virtue I cling to stead fast is do no harm. Ahimsa. Do no harm when ever possible. To myself through non judgement, healthy pure foods, regular yoga practice, exercise and self love. Do no harm to my child by providing love, plant based nutrition, education through experience and play, and offering him the kindness to choose. Do no harm to my planet and fellow earthlings by maintaining a vegan diet and reducing my toxic and carbon footprint. When I became vegan almost two years ago I had no idea how my eyes would open. I owe that to the unconditionally I have for my son. It is uncomfortable to change, to grow, to do the right thing when we aren’t used to it. And then poof one day it becomes the practice. The right thing becomes the habit. And we are always meditating.

A C T I V A T I O N ————————————————————— We all have two points to our flexibility. Our end range that can be reached through manipulation or passively. And a controlled ranged we can reach actively (which is usually less deep and less insta worthy) If you’d followed me a while (or join my classes) you know I’m a big advocate of engaging and controlling the bodies movement. Why? Because it uses so much more strength and gives way more integrity and stability in the body. If you are flexible you’ll find it easy to manipulate the body into positions and hang out there but how many of us can use strength to get to the same end pose? So next time, before you pull in a leg or try to manipulate your body in to a shape, think and try your active range first! It will work the muscles and strength needed for a more balanced body. Originally wasn’t going to post this as I’m unable to nail that dancer pose but I saw that it actually proves my point completely. And it just shows there is always somewhere to go! #yogawithsarahwhite
