Day 16 of #bty84 #worksinprogress #yogachallenge - #Natyanasana Ballet Variation or in the ballet world, a développé I struggled with leg extensions doing ballet as a child. Although I had the passive flexibility to extend the leg above my head, I didn't have the muscle strength nor control to hold nor lift the leg in/to that position without the use of my hand. Today, my passive range of motion in this shape still remains greater than my active range of motion. These days, dancers use isometric exercises to develop muscle strength and neuromuscular coordination. One technique to expand your range of motion is to use Progressive Angular Isometric Loading (PAILS) where the muscles that are being lengthened are contracted & strengthened. The other half of this technique is Regressive Angular Isometric Loading (RAILS) where the muscles on the closing side of the joint is contracted & strengthened. ...... Now hold that thought. ......... Before practicing PAILS & RAILS, I had to determine what my range of motion (ROM) is. I did that by practicing Controlled Articular Rotations (CARs). Swipe left. I begin by practicing CARs, lubricating the hip joint & accessing my ROM. I also extended my non-standing leg to see how high it will go on it's own. That is my end range of motion in this shape. Next I practiced PAILS. The stool was approximately where my end range of motion is. I am trying to lift it higher off of the stool. It's not happening but you can see from my facial expression, I'm really trying hard. Next I practice RAILS in supine position, I use a strap wrapped around my foot/ankle to resist the pull of my leg as I try to drive the leg back towards the other foot. ............ While the yoga version allows for the hand to assist, my #worksinprogress is to be able to extend the leg ballet style and I might be rewarded with a much improved Natyanasana down the road. This chakra is not just important, but severely overlooked in this day and age. if you think of muladara as the fire and the masculine energy, where your basic animal needs are taken care of (money, power, sex), then the sacral chakra is where the more subtle, feminine energy resides (love, art, relationships). It’s the open ended, shapeless goddess that is in all of us. The energy of this chakra is feminine, passive, and lunar. If you’re second chakra is flowing well then you’ll be a creative, open person with balanced personal relationships. You will be able to keep healthy boundaries and express yourself easily. As humans, it is part of our nature to create. This creativity can be expressed as procreation but the second chakra energy is certainly not limited to making babies. When we cook, bake, or garden, we are creating. We create when we find a new solution to an old problem. In sanskrit it’s called “Svadhisthana” meaning, “ones own abode” but also to “taste with pleasure”. This is the seat of creativity, the water or flow in the your body. It’s ground zero of your emotional self and the place where pleasure resides. This is where the butterflies from a first kiss come and the enjoyment in the finer things in life, like good chocolate and wine and the place that art is created from. It is located above the pubic bone and below the navel, and encompasses the genital region and the hypogastric plexus. The element of the second chakra is water, which equals cohesiveness. A balanced second chakra leads to feelings of wellness, abundance, pleasure, and joy. This chakra is not just important, but severely overlooked in this day and age. if you think of muladara as the fire and the masculine energy, where your basic animal needs are taken care of (money, power, sex), then the sacral chakra is where the more subtle, feminine energy resides (love, art, relationships). It’s the open ended, shapeless goddess that is in all of us. The energy of this chakra is feminine, passive, and lunar. If you’re second chakra is flowing well then you’ll be a creative, open person with balanced personal relationships. You will be able to keep healthy boundaries and express yourself easily. As humans, it is part of our nature to create. This creativity can be expressed as procreation but the second chakra energy is certainly not limited to making babies. When we cook, bake, or garden, we are creating. We create when we find a new solution to an old problem. “I’m not flexible enough to do yoga.”🤔 It’s a common response - but if you can breathe, bring awareness to your body, and do a few simple postures, you can do yoga. 💨 Go for a 10-15 minute walk and do the stretches and twists shown in this short video. Pair each move with a few inhales and exhales. Now tell me you don’t feel a little better about life.
