CONVERSATION STARTER - Why did you decide to practice yoga for the first time? What did you hope to get out of it as a result? I’ve asked this question of almost 100 groups of people at this point. I make it a point to explain that there’s no hierarchy to the reason, no more or less spiritual or relevant answer, they’re all relevant reasons for this activity. Since the first time I did this activity there has only been one addition to the list of reasons, otherwise from city to city the responses are always roughly the same. Sometimes things get left off the list, but one of the reasons has never once been missing from the list. Community. It’s said every single week and I think that’s relevant in so many ways which I’ll discuss more in another set of posts. The other reasons are many, everything from fitness to spirituality. I bet we’ll cover all of them on this post in people’s replies. I’ll list my reasons from 21 years ago first: - an activity I could do that involved learning and using my body and to be around other people (read community) because I was retiring from gymnastics (I wasn’t looking for tricks or gymnastics poses, I needed the discipline and dedication for my mind) - I liked that yoga seemed rebellious and against the stream - I wanted something to help me not to have to suffer with my mind and anxiety - I wouldn’t have used the these words then, but I was looking for spirituality, something that my upbringing had but the belief system I was raised with wasn’t congruent with me. Ok, now it’s your turn. Remember, there’s no hierarchy, no shame in any answers. 🔥Having acclimated through our grounding to the external space, on Tuesday we focused on acclimating internally: centering the mental and emotional self and beginning to re-acquaint with our feminine power. To that effect, we enjoyed a Restorative Yoga Session to ground our Sacral Chakra. ⠀ 🥬After planting some seeds and joining on the farm tour, we re-fueled our bodies with our energizing organic green drink, made with freshly pressed cane juice and an array of superfoods from the farm. ⠀ 🏝It was a relaxing day, sitting on the grass, talking story, and enjoying each other’s company. One sister, who is a jewelry maker, also joined us and adorned us with beautiful, goddess accessories while we enjoyed our drinks. ⠀ 🧡I gifted an Ayurvedic massage to one of our participants. It began raining afterwards and she laid herself on the grass to enjoy it. I felt so happy to see her bliss in being showered by the sparkling rain and really journeying inside herself. ⠀ 👯‍♀️If you know me, you know my favorite part of Tuesday’s rituals was our evening dance meditation. Throughout life, we dance for many reasons--personal expression, leisure, joy, release, because other people are doing it. But the purpose of Tuesday’s dancing meditation was to really ground and center; to begin to re-ignite awareness of our feminine bodies, of how they move, how they feel, and what their innate intuition has to tell us about ourselves and the world around us. Through meditative dance, we circle back to ourselves. The external motion is intended to create internal stillness and clarity. We dance for Sarasvati the Goddess of knowledge, music, and art. ⠀ ✨Of course, I can’t fit our whole day into a quick recap! UPDATED: Good vs Poor Alignment.Adho Mukha Svanasana / Downward Facing Dog 🐶 Let me know if these tips help! 🙏 . 1) Keep the hands as wide as your shoulders (guys try wider if shoulders feel unstable). . 2) Keep the feet as wide as your hips. . 3) Make sure your body weight is equally distributed between hands and feet. . 4) Lengthen tailbone and inner thighs up towards the sky and back, to lengthen the spine as you zip the lower belly in . . 5) Keep the legs and knees micro bend if the hamstrings are too tight. . 6) Hug arm bones into midline, as you push the floor away. . 7) Lengthen outer shoulder and hug in with inner shoulder. . 8) Keep neutral pelvis, spine and scapula. Avoid sagging the torso and collapsing on the shoulder joints. . 9) Keep the cervical spine relax and press the throat/palate back towards the skull, keeping ears between arm, relaxing the gaze. . 10) Keeping the heels away from the floor helps rele.
