We practice to remember it’s just a ride, we practice to remember who we are, we practice to become the living liberated. Asana is one just one 8th of Patanjali’s Yoga and Ashtanga Yoga is just one path of many. As the corporatisation of an ancient spiritual practice becomes more and more prevalent and we cash in on the mysteries of the universe. For the sake of ourselves, our community and the planet as a whole, everything expressed by infinite consciousness, perhaps the first two limbs of Ashtanga Yoga would make a better focus for modern, western Yogis if we wanted our practice to make a difference to more than I. Bending the body could just be bending the body or it could be the start of a path to Yoga. Some of the most inspiring Yogis I have ever met have never stood on a yoga mat in their lives. I struggle morally to sell something that literally could be the saviour of our planet, the guidance to discover what we are as humans should be a fundamental human right, not hidden behind the veil of illusion that is modern corporate Yoga. Good Morning All! ☀️⁣ ⁣ I just wanted to share this quick adjustment with you all as a great alternative to cat-cow if you have a knee injury or if any of your students do 🧘🏻‍♀️⁣ ⁣ I’ve been struggling with an inflamed tendon on my left knee recently, so my yoga practice has been somewhat challenging to find alternatives to postures that involve the knees! Feeling inspired after spending the weekend exploring The Art of Assisting and Adjusting with @tymihoward ❤️ I came into the workshop not really knowing what to expect, but the moment I received an amazing adjustment in pigeon pose from @b33a, I knew I was in good hands! 👐 . . Assisting and adjusting is truly an art unique to each individual. Touch requires trust, and it can be intimidating on both sides to touch and be touched. As a student, I love receiving a helping hand to venture deeper into a pose, and as a teacher I love connecting with my students through intuitive adjustments. With a single touch, you learn so much about a person’s body. You can sense their energy, where they carry tension and guide them beyond their preconceived limitations. It was eye opening to learn new techniques, explore new cues and ways of moving. Simply by shifting weight to a different part of the body, it can change the feeling of a pose entirely, breathing new life into familiar asanas. . . Thank you for inspiring us with your warmth, compassionation and playfulness Tymi! I had so many tada moments just by listening to you share your stories.💡🙏 In the closing shavasana you said something that resonated with me deeply. YOGA... If you have a dedication to practice and enough willpower to continuously show up for yourself it all starts to fall away... every time you thought you wasn’t good enough, every time you didn’t feel enough, every time you put yourself down, we find a space beyond that where the mind is the quiet, the breath slows down and you find moments of total peace, total calm and total love. Samadhi. Every time you find that space you come back a little different, with a little more freedom, a little more self acceptance, a little more connected to something bigger than yourself and with a little more compassion for yourself and all others. You practice, you change and you view yourself and the world through new eyes, finding a connection to your true self is knowing you are always loved. . Yoga the path to self realisation. Am I a bad teacher if I said “No” to my student? ⠀ I had some interesting experience teaching a Mysore class recently and I want to share it with you to hear your thoughts on the matter. ⠀ 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲 The student asked me to help in the backbends using the Holding Ankles technique. I added a video on how does it look like in the stories. Have a look 👆🏻Nice and easy right? ⠀ Now imagine that the student rather than being a petite lady is a tall xl size guy. ⠀ Should’ve I agree or decline this equestrian? And what’s even more important, 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗯𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗳 𝗜 𝘀𝗮𝘆 “𝗡𝗼”? ⠀ 𝗬𝗲𝘀/𝗡𝗼 ⠀ I don’t feel comfortable with this kind of adjustment. However I want to make the best I can for those people who come to practice with me. It also depends on how do I feel physically and emotionally that day. And it strongly depends on how student feels physically and emotionally too. ⠀ But on the other hand, doesn’t it make me a weak incapable teacher if during the class my emotional and physical health isn’t 💯? Isn’t it why there’s a “minimum 5 years personal practice “ requirement for the ashtanga student to begin teaching? So that you learn not only how to sit in lotus and hold headstand but most importantly how to manage your body and mind on a deeper level? ⠀ I’ve been thinking all these through and consulted with my teacher too. I’ll share it and what did I do at the end in the next post. ⠀ Meanwhile I’d love to hear from you, 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 what would you do and why?

Give me a little Supported Seated-Angle Pose pleaze 👌 One thing about Restorative Yoga is there is no need to work agressively to achieve the psychiological benefits 🤔 A simple modification for this asana is to use a chair = gentle on the pelvic tilt, relief for the lower back & total support for the upper body to just let go ♡ Women often find this pose beneficial during your menstrual cycle and throughout pregnancy ♡ The pose also balances the squeezing effect on the spine and kidneys that backbends create ♡ A great asana to calm mental agitation and can be practiced to relieve headaches or insomnia Enjoy 🙏

Razvojem moderne posturalne joge, tokom xx veka, komunikacija putem asistencija otvorila je prostor za drugačiju vrstu dijaloga. Danas se, u svetlu pokretanja velikih pitanja odnosa moći između učenika i učitelja, praktičara i instruktora, otvorio prostor kritike uloge učitelja i instruktora kao i vrste usluga i prirode asistencija koje pruža. Prenošenje informacija dodirom kroz asistencije može učvrstiti položaj uzemljivanjem i stabilizacijom, može ga korigovati, rafinirati i produbiti na podržavajući način. Asistencija takođe može biti destabilizujuća i deranžirajuća, mehanička, štetna i opasna. Asistencije itekako mogu biti agresivne, manipulativne, neprimerene, neetične i dosegnuti razmere fizičkog ugrožavanja i seksualnog uznemiravanja. Radionica će se baviti pitanjima kada i kako prići vežbaču; smislom i namerom asistencije; kako ostvariti fizički kontakt koji neće ugroziti ničiju individualnost i autonomiju; karakteristikama korisnih asistencija i razlozima praktikovanja istih; kako ostvariti odnos poverenja i od prostirke kreirati bezbedno mesto za vežbanje i učenje joge. Ova tematska radionica posvećena je položajima snage i restorativnim položajima, varijetetima od navasane do apanasane, od bakasane do balasane, od adho mukha vrksasane do supta virasane, od mayurasane do supta parivartanasane... Položaji snage zahtevaju precizno tagretiranje mišićnih grupa prilikom izvođenja. Efikasno izolovanje određenih mišićnih grupa reflektuje se na stabilnost i bezbednost zglobova. Cilj je negovanje kinematičkog lanca koji čine zglob šake, lakta i ramena i očuvanje stabilnosti lumbalnog i cervikalnog dela kičmenog stuba. Srazmernost snage i fleksibilnosti čuva zdravlje zglobova. Delotvornost restorativnih položaja zavisi od mogućnosti deaktivacije mišićnih grupa slaganjem delova tela jednih u odnosu na druge na način koji ne iziskuje neuro-mišićnu tenziju. . . . Downward Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana) should ideally look like an inverted letter "V". Proper alignment : ■ Fingers spread, hands are shoulder width apart. Middle fingers parallel to each other. ■ Feet are hip distance apart. ■Weight is distributed equally between hands and feet. ■Arms and spine are lengthened. ■Ribs in and navel drawn into spine - to create a hollowness in lower abdomen. ■ Hips are up and back. ■Your gaze is to your thighs or feet. Head is relaxed. ■Depending on flexibility of shoulders and hamstrings, knees can be bent. Otherwise heels lowered to mat. To correct your downward facing dog : Lift up heels, bend the knees and draw chest back towards thighs. This will help lengthen the spine and straighten the arms. Keep shoulders down your back and away from ears. Breathe . Don't look towards your hands. Hold here for a while. Don't rush to straighten legs. The modification is to keep legs bent until shoulder and hamstring flexibility is maintained. Using blocks can assist with creating space and with tight shoulders. Keep practicing and have fun with your yoga journey. With the news full of abuse of power in yoga (Jois, Manos, Bikram,...), I thought it’s time for me to address adjustments/ hands-on in Asana classes. The definition itself contains the biggest issue: “a small alteration or movement made to achieve a desired fit, appearance, or result.” Too many instructors get caught up by a certain ‘desired fit’, a form they were taught the posture has to look like. Therefore they press/push/hold students in that form, most of the time without any anatomical or background knowledge. Even a very gentle adjustment means that the instructor believes to know more about the students mental and physical state. Ever too often I see new teachers -overly motivated and under experienced - touching their students, because that’s what they were taught to do during ytt. We see pictures of crazy looking adjustments, that make me wonder if it is more about the fancy teachers move than about the benefits of touch. Planning a yoga class is tricky enough, how do we know what every individual student needs that day? That’s why asanas are an offer&variations need to be provided in any class. Verbal alignment cues are an offering, giving the opportunity to either follow them or not. Demonstration is an example of a general idea how the posture can look like (especially because too many students never learn the terminology). And hands-on can benefit a long term student to enter a deeper level, implied that the instructor/student relationships is based on trust & well knowing. If you have ever joined my class, you might have noticed that I barely touch my students and if I have done it in the past then only on students I taught for many years. I am not saying we should never give a physical adjustment if for example we see students causing harm to their body. Mindlessly using trained adjustments for each asana is not only taking away the -sometimes needed slow&long- path towards feeling themselves better, but can overstep the emotional border some people have or need. We don’t know our students. We don’t know what they need all the time. If they need touch& we feel it, we can recommend a bodywork /massage session. Be continued in comments
