I deeply feel for anyone that struggles to get a good night’s rest. A few years back, I was working in a busy café that roasted their own absolutely divine coffee, which we could enjoy as often as we liked - a terrible idea if you're anxious or insomnia-prone! Where I usually only ever had one coffee in the morning, I was having up to two or three on some days. Whilst my body initially handled the fast-paced and high-stress nature of the job, and perhaps even thrived off it for about eight months, inevitably the stress, the hot Queensland climate and burning the candle at both ends caught up with me, sending my hormones and nervous system completely out of whack. I felt constantly on edge. I was restless, flighty and fearful, with a nervous tension moving through my cells. I couldn’t fall asleep until the early hours of the morning despite being physically exhausted after a long day, and as I had to wake up only a few hours later for work, I not only felt incredibly drained of energy, but I was more anxious and emotional than ever. I’d catch myself during the day hoping and praying that I would be able to fall asleep that night, and if I couldn’t, I’d lie awake feeling like a zombie, completely alone, wondering if my body would ever find harmony again. Whilst I could run through an extensive list on the importance of sleep, I think we all know how crucial it is in maintaining our physical and mental health. Lack of sleep can contribute to an over-active nervous system, weight gain, mood swings and in some cases, the onset of psychotic episodes. In this blog post I offer some tips for improving sleep hygiene and getting adequate rest. Coming from a corporate background, it was struggling through the emotional and physical toll of Breast Cancer and Domestic Violence that was the catalyst for change. I finally decided to dedicate more time towards my health by visiting Suzan, a nutritionist in Abu Dhabi that came highly recommended. I encourage everyone to explore ways to develop a healthier relationship with food. I’ve been seeing Suzan, who has shown me how to unlock my body’s full potential for a better quality of life. Engaging with a nutritionist who also can be your mentor isn’t just about losing weight or fixing poor eating habits, it’s more about understanding overall wellbeing and how that can be implemented into your daily routine.
