Every moment of every day, we are bombarded by information from outside and inside our body. We take in outside information via the senses (perception) and internal information via sensations (interoception). It is the job of our brain to interpret this information, and it issues its best guess about what it is based on our past experience. According to Patanjali, there are five mental activities we engage in and they are:聽pramana聽(correct assessment),聽viparyaya聽(incorrect assessment),聽vikalpa聽(imagination),聽nidra聽(deep sleep) and聽smrtayah聽(memory). This means that at any point of any day we are either interpreting our experience (correctly or incorrectly), imagining things that do not exist, sleeping without dreams, or reminiscing about something that happened in the past. So basically in our waking state, we are evaluating something, imagining something or remembering something. All of this happens through the lens of our own past experiences, beliefs, and character so it is highly subjective. Our perceptions are so vivid and immediate that they compel us to believe that we experience the world as it is, when we actually experience a world of our own construction. The attachment of the mind to a particular condition is the principle of egoism. Why does it happen? Why does it breed the further problems of like, dislike, love of physical life, individual life, fear of death, etc.? This happens because of a background which is still deeper than this particular psychological involvement. The very belief in the reality of externals is the cause for this calamity, because the moment we have a conviction that an object of perception is real, we have to develop a real attitude towards it. The perception of the object as something real is the beginning of the trouble. The trouble then intensifies itself as a compulsive activity towards the development of an attitude towards that object. We are not simply living life 鈥 we are identical with life itself. One of the most difficult things to define is life itself. We cannot say what life is. It is only a word that we utter without any clear meaning before our eyes. It is an enigma, a mystery 鈥 a mystery which has caught hold of us, which extracts the blood out of us every day, which keeps us restless and tantalizes us, promising us satisfaction but never giving it. Life is made in such a way that there are promises which are never fulfilled. Every object in the world promises satisfaction, but it never gives satisfaction 鈥 it only promises. And all promises made are made to be broken . When we the individuals who are living life cut ourselves from the significance of life, then life becomes a contradiction and a meaningless pursuit of the will-o'-the-wisp. Why do we cut ourselves off from the meaning of life and then suffer like this? This is the inherent weakness of the sensory functions of us the individual. The senses are our enemies. Why do we call them enemies? Because they tell us that we are isolated from everything else. This is the essence of sensory activity. There is no connection between ourselves and others, and we can go on fighting with everybody. This is what the senses tell us. But yet, they are double-edged swords; they tell us two things at the same time. On one side they tell us that everything is outside us, and we are disconnected from everybody else and everything in this world. But on the other side they say that we are bound to grab things, connect ourselves with things, obtain things, and maintain relationship with things. Everyone has some difficulty, but what is the reason behind this difficulty? The problems of life are like effects produced by certain causes, and the remedying of these results or effects automatically implies the recognition of the nature of the cause or causes thereof, so that, as we know very well, when the cause is properly dealt with, the effect automatically gets controlled. What are the problems of life, and how do they come about? Though it is true that the details of the problems of life vary from individual to individual 鈥 they are not identical in every respect 鈥 yet, the major factors contributing to the problems of life are similar in every case. The minor details may differ, but the major aspects do not differ. So the mind tries to determine what these factors are. Ayer en el tercer intento ocurri贸 esta apertura. Para saltar hacia las profundidades del oc茅ano del yoga y el inconsciente (para hacer consciente aquello que aun no es) hace falta valent铆a y coraje, sentir el vac铆o del salto y la entrega. Mas all谩 de las palabras. Hay algo en esta practica que conecta con una realidad que no se puede describir con ninguna frase. Un magneto que atrae fuertemente al cuerpo, mente y alma. Las asanas, la practica de ellas. Tabu. Porque? Cual es el misterio con esto? Siendo verdad que no es la meta del yoga, como tan verdad que es su veh铆culo y la manera mas concreta que tenemos para conectarnos con nuestro interior. Entonces, en este mundo moderno de apertura, conciencia, amor, cual es el tabu de compartir parte de este trabajo - al menos el m铆o - honesto sobre el mat. Yo ya no quiero mas m煤sculo, pero si fortaleza interior; mi flexibilidad va y viene, y este vaiv茅n me revela balance y claridad mental; entre asana y asana - apegos y repulsi贸n - que mas da, cultivo un coraz贸n sereno y noble que pueda abrazar los opuestos y mantenerse ecu谩nime ante los necios. Para ser eficiente debemos observar nuestras mentes complejas y acomplejadas. Exponernos naturalmente no es lo mas com煤n porque queremos ser aceptados, elogiados y aclamados; el resultado de una practica superficial. Sin embargo, existe la alternativa de profundizar, de adentrarnos y bueno tal vez no es lo mas agradable de principio pero les aseguro que el camino tomara otros matices. Cuando nos adentramos en los estudios del yoga con coraz贸n y mente abierta las ense帽anzas son las llaves m谩gicas que abren puertas hacia nuestro universo interior. No temas saltar, sino no lo haces pueden pasar dos cosas: vivir谩s condenado en la superficialidad condicionada - samsara halahala - o veras el yoga pasar y perder谩s la oportunidad en este tiempo de vida de vivir conscientemente tu cambio de conciencia, siendo esto algo invaluable y el proposito real de nuestra alma al haber escogido volver. Sometimes (or often ....) our mind is surrounded of fog - like the 鈥欴rachenfels鈥..... If the thoughts are calmful, the mind will be transparent like a crystal, which takes the color of the object in front (1.41) The state, in which words, meaning, knowledge and imagination are mixed together and 鈥歜e one鈥 is called 鈥歴avitarka鈥. (1.42) (my own unpretentious translation). Patanjali describes in his sutras step by step what to do to handle the 5 waves of thoughts (vrittis) and 9 hindrances in yoga, to realize the 5 sufferings (kleshas) to develop the 5 status of mind ....to 鈥歳each鈥, to stay/be in 鈥歴amadhi鈥.
