I had the amazing opportunity to do some aero testing at the A2 Wind Tunnel just outside of Charlotte, NC this past week. I’ve known for some time that I am producing similar wattage at the same weight as other pro’s but not going quite as fast. I’ve made upgrades in technology over the last few years, like wearing the Giro Aerohead helmet and using aero hydration systems, but I decided it was the right time in my career to know, rather than guess, about what position and equipment is fastest for me (much of this is rider specific). Through a bunch of small changes, I was able to definitively drop 20 watts of drag and come away with ideas of how to drop even more. With the additional mechanical modifications I’ve made to my bike this winter, I’m looking, in the very least, at a 30 watt savings at my ironman race speed compared to last year’s set up. This is one of those examples of how, if you want to be a world class athlete, it takes more than just fitness. You’ve got to be pushing the boundaries in fitness as well as technology, organizational skills, mental skills, and so much more. And you need to seek experts in all these areas to help you. I’m looking forward to the free speed I got from this work and confident that it will help me get closer to where I want to be...a world class triathlete. I’m behind and I still have a long way to go. Thanks to @zanescycles for helping me get my bike set up to go to the wind tunnel and for helping with the changes to come.
