There are many benefits of this exercise, but my main goal here is to lengthen my hamstring muscles. Short, weak hamstrings are a risk factor for a hamstring strain. Monkey gets length through the back of the legs and stretches the hamstrings. Going from a flexed to extended position is often a time the hamstrings can get strained while running (in swing phase). While eccentric strengthening is the most important, if the muscles can not straighten all the way, they cannot strengthen throughout their full range of motion. . To use @jillybondphysio term, I’m focusing on working with clients in a sub threat environment. Too much focus on perfect alignment and movement can elicit tension and anxiety. Focusing on breath and fluid movement can allow you to succeed in exercises you never thought you could.
