Eka Pada Adho Mukha Svanasana (Three-Legged Downward Dog) late at night on my balcony. . It’s almost a relief to come back to my home practice after a break (a persistent cold that kept returning, followed by a long stint of travelling overseas and locally). I still prefer the atmosphere of studio classes (especially because I now only go to classes with good teachers who I feel develop my practice) but I’m trying to love doing things on my own. It’s a little like learning to be comfortable having dinner out, alone (which I’ve now mastered, thanks to a year abroad without my husband). . Do you ever peer into the rabbit hole of introspection only to tumble over the edge and spend a significant amount of time staring at yourself, sifting through the parts and pieces that comprise the whole of you? Do you dive deeply below the surface to look at the “truths” you tell yourself about who you are? Do you rip out your guts and examine them closely before restoring them to their proper place inside of you? What do you learn about yourself? . Do you prefer to be self-aware? . I’m a deep diver. I’ve dissected and examined myself through a microscope. I can tell you that I am deeply flawed, but I also know what motivates me. I know how I have grown and changed over the years. I have a vague notion of where I’d like to go in the future, of who I’d like to become. . But I’m always becoming and I do not know that I will ever become, if that makes sense. . Thoreau writes, “Things don’t change; we do,” but I must disagree. Yes, we change, but by extension we change the things around us: our environment, technologies, societies, etc. Nothing is static, and while there are certainly things that wouldn’t change on their own, we exert our force upon them to change them or they change because we have changed. And by extension, we change in relation to those newly altered things. I think the two are intrinsically linked, don’t you? . I affect my environment just as much as it affects me. I get a lot of DMs asking what type of gymnastics or dance training I've done or if I've been practicing since I was a child. The answer is always the same- I was never a dancer or gymnast and only started my practice in 2013. I did the year or two of both dance and gym when I was really young but that didn't last- swimming was my big thing until mid teens and I played baseball since the age of 9-17. When I started my practice, I could barely fold forward, bend my knees in downdog with heels up and the splits seemed like a actual dream- the top left photo is after 4 months into my practice. Fast forward to today, and splits are something I can comfortably do after ten minutes or less into my practice and that still shocks me! It's amazing what years of consistency and practice can do to the body. Never give up on your practice, you will achieve amazing things with time! And remember- everyone started somewhere so don't compare your practice to someone else's. It's great to look to someone for inspiration and motivation- it's how I started! Doorframe junk! So, I tried a bunch of stuff that didn’t work! Turns out I need a wider doorframe! And it turns out some stuff is physically impossible! I think I may be able to come up with something from the first pic, either balancing with the knee or foot on the wall. What I was actually attempting tonight was to go up in headstand and then twist my lower body 90 degrees and then put the legs into a front splits with a upper body not moving. Need a bigger doorway and or is impossible. Here's something that I've been working on this week. 😊 . . I'm using feedback from the wall + chair to flow from three legged dog to warrior 3 It's so fun! --and tiring 😂 . In three legged dog, I'm sending force into the wall by pressing my foot into it. In Virabhadrasana III (Warrior 3), I'm using the rolley chair in front of me. Here I move dynamically from a closed to open hip chain. To do this, I first press my hands into the chair. I roll the chair away from my body when I connect my foot onto the wall. I then roll the chair closer towards me for balance as I transition into a single legged squat, and then repeat. (Vid is sped up. I tried to do this at a slower pace.) . The feedback from the wall and chair help me feel the pose in a different way. I like it because I have a better awareness of my muscles engaging and being active. (I did a little too many of these yesterday and let's just say I'm definitely feeling it today😅) . There are so many different + creative ways we can do traditional Asana poses - I'm now starting to discover more options (especially with the wall) and it's quite exciting. . .
