Supta Padangusthasana is a great yoga pose to stretch your hamstrings without straining your spine. It is a miracle pose for lower-back pain. Its actions help create traction in the lower back, which can relieve compression and tension. And doing the pose on the floor allows you to safely stretch your hamstrings without putting much stress on your vertebrae. The floor supports your back and prevents it from rounding or pushing backward, an unhealthy movement for many back problems. Finally, the asymmetrical nature of the stretch can balance the two sides of the back. For most of us, one side of the body is dominant, which causes that side of the back to become tighter or stronger, distorting posture. Over time, these asymmetries can become the source of back pain or disk damage. When we label a feeling ‘my hips feel tight’ as ‘I have tight hips’, this becomes a limitation. It is more subtle to notice ‘my hips feel tight right now’ and then to really drop into that feeling. For a start, where is the feeling of tightness? Is it in the joint, the muscles, tendons... and if so where? What have we been doing to create that tension? Have we spent a lot of time sitting, driving, moving in one particular way to create tiredness? Can this inform a way of moving that opens, releases, rests what is under/over used? I love playing with shapes and this is one of my favourite themes to teach. Taking the basic shape of Uttita Padangusthasansa and flipping it in all the different planes. Using each pose to discover a new energy and movement of direction for the limbs. Including the crown of the head as a point of extension. Yesterday I had everyone practicing like starfish aerials! Letting energy radiate from the centre to the tips of each limb (and beyond) and then drawing energy back in from each limb to the core. Anyway I digress because didn’t do this particular sequence yesterday🙄 we focused on #manipura #chakra But before the day started my lovely friend @dolly_dagger29 took this sequence of photos for me. As always I look at the photos and can see adjustments and improvements I could make but it felt good and when it feels right and fills the body with energy ready for 4hrs teaching I’m not going to be tough on myself. I am truly grateful for what my body will allow me to do. And for the continuing journey.
