I have heard two friends say “I don’t know how to engage my butt” or relax it, either way, I figured I’d do a gluteus maximus post focused on #shalabhasana #locutpose part way through I decided to do shalabasana B as well. - I can’t emphasize enough to continue breathing!! Yoga is really about the breathing more than the poses. Breathe into the pose(ideally evenly paced inhales and exhales), if your breath becomes short, back out a bit maybe it’s too strenuous on some part of the body. - 1. Lay down on your belly
2. Palms facing up and relax the shoulders
3. Lift one leg and rotate inwards, do so with the other leg so that your big toes touch. This angles your hip bones directly downwards, thereby creating more space and length between your sit bones.
4. On your inhale, life your chest and legs up off the ground. 5. Press the back of your hands down to gain lift from your chest. Continue to breathe. 6. Find length in this pose. Like a string is pulling your toes and head in opposite directions. 7. The glutes should be engaged and working, but not overly clinched. Keep your toes touching! Sometimes having a block or pillow between your thighs can help focus on the appropriate muscles. 8. Soften your shoulders away from your ears. Gaze should be slightly downwards to avoid hyper extending the neck. 9. Shalabasana B is the same except palms are down by your chest. Lifting up is the same but draw your elbows together to create lift in the chest. -Benefits of this pose: strengthens your core and back muscles, lengthens spine and opens chest, tones hamstring and glutes, and improves digestion.
- A teacher of mine, said that the “glutes are hamstring extendors”;which makes sense right? As everything is connected. So anything that works the hamstrings also works the glutes; like standing poses, back bends, and forward bends.

Supta Padangusthasana with a rope and wall. Both legs are tadasana legs. The leg that goes up has to be 90 degrees and remain in the position. Keep both sides of your pelvis touching the floor and the wall is nice to remind your other foot to be active.
