Took this picture on my way home from training tonight because nothing makes you feel more badass than knowing you put the work in on a day that you could have easily stayed on the couch! Some of you have asked how I'm doing lately, so thanks for thinking of me. I'm on the right path, back to training more, and working with the right professional to get me back on track. That's not to say it's over, mental health is a life long battle for stability, so there will be good days and bad ones, but with the right support it's easier to push through (kinda like the jiu jitsu grind). Thank you to everyone who reached out to me these past few weeks, it's nice to be reminded there are people in your corner. #bjj #girlsingis #jiujitsumom #submitthestigma

_rsig_. Today I encountered a trigger which caused me innately run to the dark

Today I encountered a trigger which caused me innately run to the darkest place in my house. You see, I find comfort in the solace of darkness. It is space in which I can calm down enough to fend off the emotion that comes with a trigger. While I was in this closet proverbially licking my wounds I thought about Jiu-Jitsu. Strangely the disabling fear disappeared. So, I braved exposure to the light and found my Gi. With Gi, belt, and Mouthguard in hands I found my way to the mat. Thank God for Jiu-Jitsu. #jiujitsusavedmylife #bipolar #bethe1to #submitthestigma #mentalhealthawareness #suicideprevention #mission22 #22aday #iamchange #320changesdirection

That first step on the mat is the hardest...the lady right in front came one Saturday all by herself...FOR herself! Meet Martie Taylor, she drove through the parking lot three times before mustering the courage to walk through the doors for class. When I explained the mission of our Saturday Women’s classes her eyes got so bright and she said “you don’t understand....this is MY next step in my OWN recovery.” Martie has brought herself from the depths of addiction and has grown to become a sponsor herself. She has been a member for months now and says the every class reveals a weakness but at the same time gives her the confidence that she can over come them with practice and technique. She always shows up to Saturday classes with a donation and is always willing to counsel if needed....that’s how we fight for her. We have each other’s back...we are there when you need us. #mybruisesarefromjiujitsu #thebestoffemalejiujitsu #womensupportingwomen #nogigirls #girlsingis #mommasonthemat #ifightforher #submitthestigma #submitthesilence

*a few days late for #worldmentalhealthday. . After approximately 7 months off jiu jitsu (only a few sessions here & there to see if I could, but couldn’t) I have finally managed to overcome some of the anxiety & fear of returning to the mats. If you have endured any significant time off I take my hat off to you, the courage it takes to overcome the fear & anxiety of returning is huge. . I wrecked my knee almost 3 years ago & did nothing about it, I spent that time almost unable to walk up & down stairs, the rail was my saviour, but I continued to train (& snowboard), silly me. It wasn’t until a few things stacked up, my body began to break down & my all round physical & mental health snowballed to quite the low point that I realised I had to just stop. I fell out of love with jiu jitsu, in fact I hardly had the motivation to work on my weaknesses & injuries in the gym but with the tiniest bit of discipline I could muster, my body got a bit stronger but my injuries didn’t improve much... . Then life happened, some huge changes, I focused on other people, busied myself with other people’s stuff & then I realised that it’s actually all ok, problems are made to be solved & that is my favourite thing to do. So I focused on overcoming all the obstacles in my head! . With all stories that we live to tell, I overcame the obstacles with the help of the guy pictured in this photo, @peachesbjj. Although I promised him unconditional support to achieve his dreams, the support he gives me to overcome the silent battles is unwavering. Without him my love for jiu jitsu would have died with my slump, but through his dedication to his own improvement, I stayed engaged & interested through supporting him. Now we are going to work together to completely reinvent my jiu jitsu for long term practice, as my aging body can no longer withstand the pressures, day in and day out, of my favourite & go to positions. Plus learning is my favourite part! . . . #submitthestigma #bjj #jiujitsu #jiujitsugirls #supportwomensbjj #bjjcouple #bjjtravels #bjjnomad #jiujitsulifestyle #therealjiujitsulifestyle #downbutnotout #overcomingfear #injuryprone #anxietyproblems #jiujitsucouple #mybestfriend

#philosophyfriday Cortez army's boats landed upon the shore, undetected as they were about to overtake a new land. As they assembled in formation, Cortez had but one command. "Burn the ships" A number of generals confronted him. "Those ships are our only route of escape should the battle go wrong. Burning them is insanity." Cortez replied with the same command. "Burn the ships" With the boats ablaze Cortez continued "We fight and win, or we die moving forward. No war was won by retreating home, no battle was won by running away. Your only route to freedom is through the army awaiting us beyond those hills. hen_zee. One of the things my courses has been covering extensively this semest

One of the things my courses has been covering extensively this semester is the mind-body connection. Psychological stressors (that seem abstract and unfortunately imaginary to many), if left unmanaged, create tangible physical consequences, whether it's "unexplained" headaches, fatigue, stomachaches or shortness of breath. Not acknowledging feelings doesn't make a person immune to these problems but rather more prone to these physical symptoms. In fact, psychosomatic symptoms are typically more prevalent in ethnic groups that are less accepting of mental health. There will be moments where even the most adaptive thought patterns won't be enough to stop or address the toll that certain emotions bring to the body.  Luckily there are techniques which can alter how your body responds to the stress. Among them are diaphragmatic breathing (pictured here) and progressive muscle relaxation (not pictured here). For World Mental Health Day, I encourage everyone to learn them (YouTube has some walkthroughs) because it may be the thing, or one of the things, that can help you or somebody else get through their day. Diagram 1 taken from trailstowellness.org #worldmentalhealthday #mentalhealth #submitthestigma #mindfulness #progressivemusclerelaxation #diaphragmaticbreathing #meditation Disclaimer: This is complement and NOT a substitute for going to therapy (for those that need it) Thanks to @megan_manierski for letting me know about this day.

Today is World Mental Health Day. It’s been touching to see people share - to witness how far we’ve come in acknowledging and discussing stress, low moods, anxieties, and how to care for ourselves and others. . And though I don’t want to knock this incredible progress, too many people I care about continue to suffer in silence because there is so much we still shy away from.... the frightening part of mental health, the one we don’t yet understand, speak of in whispers, and sweep under the rug - incapacitating, debilitating mental illnesses like bipolar depression, schizophrenia, chronic depression, severe anxiety, PTSD, episodes of psychosis, suicide, etc... . Statistically, at some point in our lives, we will either be ill ourselves or we will know and love someone who is ill. So that in time no one has to suffer needlessly and live in shame and fear of ostracism over a health problem, please please please educate yourselves. . I won’t ramble - only ask that you take this occasion and 15/20 minutes of your time to read a page on Mind (see link in my bio). It will tell you what mental illness is not - a personality trait that makes people dishonest and dangerous - and what mental illness is - chemical and hormonal imbalance in the brain and body that comes about no differently to other illness and is nothing to fear. And if you’re currently ill or are watching a loved one suffer, please know that there are so many of us who understand, care, have been through it, and who will listen without judgment when you’re ready to speak up - please don’t let that be just on this one day of the year. ❤️

One year ago today, I blew out my knee. It was (and is) World Mental Health Day, and that seemed weirdly fitting. I wanted to write something today to mark the occasion. More than that, I wanted to write something to mark my progress. Above all, I want to share my experience - honestly, without trying to push your emotional buttons. It’s hard to be honest with others when you’re not really honest with yourself. I’ve gone through a lot, learned a lot. The one thing that really stands out is how much I’ve been avoiding some of my thoughts and feelings. I was on crutches for a while. I had surgery 6 months after the injury, and was back on the crutches. All told, I was off the mats for around 9 months. This was not a good time for me. I hid my darkest thoughts. I tried to silence them with alcohol and video games. I cut myself off from other people so they wouldn’t see what I didn’t want them to know: that I felt broken, pathetic, useless. I had some ups; I had some downs. I wrote a lot about what I was going through. A lot of people reached out to me to let me know I didn’t have to go through things on my own. It helped, and I’m deeply grateful for all the support I received, but still I kept stuff hidden. I showed my pain so people would show me sympathy, but I kept quiet about the issues that were really gnawing at me. Telling people that I was still struggling seemed like an admission that I was broken. I felt guilty and selfish that I still felt weak, even after people had made the effort to reach out to me, to connect and to support me. I didn’t want people to know this, believing that I didn’t deserve their love unless I pretended to be someone better than who I was. So I denied my darkest thoughts, even to myself: but they were still there. (1/2)

The outside heel hook from "single leg x" is one of the key fundamental leg locks that should be understood by the time you reach blue belt. We saw @marcusbuchecha attempt this heel hook from top half guard during the ADCC world championships. This gave us a great look at what happens at the upper level. If you're also struggling to finish the outside HH from "single leg x" then this is the video for you. A few details on why it's such a hard finish to get at the higher levels, and my preferred 1st bail out option when the defensive player spins. “Exercise to stimulate, not to annihilate. The world wasn't formed in a day, and neither were we.” - LH . . . Today is #worldmentalhealthday. Take a moment to reflect and thank yourself for all the work you have done to get here. Do not let your struggles define who you are. Continue to grow and overcome, even if it seems impossible at times. Protect your energy, let those around you love you and help. Be kind to yourself. 📷: @dustondo

Today is world mental health day. We all need to do better to take care of ourselves and each other. There’s such a stigma on stress, anxiety and depression. There shouldn’t be. Not long ago, I found myself in a huge mental slump. Work stress, single mom life, recent deaths in my family and other factors played in and kicked me down. It took me realizing something was not right with me and took me admitting it to my family and friends. I did something about it. I removed the toxins out of my diet, got back around inspiring people and started working out again. Being around the people I was once around a few years ago while learning and training the art of Muay Thai helped tremendously. I cant make it there as much as the next person due to night shift, having a teenage son who plays football and being a single parent but when I do make it there, man do I feel so good afterwards. If you or anyone you’re close with is struggling and not themselves, do something about it TODAY!! 💚 #WorldMentalHealthDay #SubmitTheStigma

Did you know I’ve been big since I was five years old? There are pictures of me developing a chest at 6 because of my weight. Every year was the same - “this is my year”. A few months in and something would offset me. Guys. I’m so done starting over. Stick with me or don’t. But one day, you’re going to see me and be like “holy shit, that’s Heather?!” And this is the absolute last time. 🤙🏼• • • #positivethoughtschallenge #mamahealth #postpartumhealth #fatgirlhealthy #shieldmaiden #letmehearyourwarcry #heathen #defy #persevere #confidence #youdontdefineme #weightloss #submitthestigma #iwatch #cantstopwontstop #girlsingis #bjjwarrior #victoryorvalhalla #shejitsu

Today is World Mental Health day. Something close to my heart and to many others. Although a more significant topic than it used to be, many people still carry a stigma around discussing mental health. I am in no way an expert and of course you should speak to a professional if you are struggling, but a number of aspects of BJJ and MMA can support those with mental health issues, which includes having a fantastic community around you . So as well as celebrating athletes who are excelling in their sport, I also want to celebrate those who are changing their communities through sport. Below are a number of pages related to mma and bjj who are doing some fantastic things to raise mental health issues using their platforms. @submitthestigma @erinherle @mindmats @royalmarinesjiujitsu #theprodigypodcast #podcast #ukpodcast #newpodcast #bjjpodcast #ukmma #bjjuk #mma #bjj #podcastlisten #mentalhealth #wmhd #ukmentalhealthday #submitthestigma

You can only make so many excuses before they fall on deaf ears. I have my 3 year old niece, my 3 year old son, and my three month old daughter - and I still did my work out. I was getting tired of the normal stuff. Since I signed up for @neoufitness, they have a little of everything. And so far, @yaminahlegohn dance work out is my FAVORITE. I mean... don’t get me wrong, that phrase “white girls can’t dance” is 1000% true for me. But Yaminah’s attitude makes the workout so fun. I adore her and her “Yaaassss!” personality. • • • #positivethoughtschallenge #mamahealth #postpartumhealth #fatgirlhealthy #shieldmaiden #letmehearyourwarcry #heathen #defy #persevere #confidence #youdontdefineme #weightloss #submitthestigma #iwatch #cantstopwontstop #girlsingis #bjjwarrior #victoryorvalhalla #shejitsu

People think taking about mental health makes you weak. False. The best thing I’ve ever done for my life and relationships was talk to a professional. Mental health is just as important as any other one. If you are like me, you live a world of passion, pain and stress. It’s life that you feel unworthy, less than and start to think the world would be better if you weren’t in it. I know if I have felt that way others have. Tomorrow is World Mental Health Day. Share your story. We lose someone every 40 seconds to suicide. Perhaps if people didn’t feel alone or like they were the only one with those thoughts it wouldn’t happen as much. You use social media to share bull all the time, tomorrow and maybe for once use it to help others. #worldsmentalhealthday #worldmentalhealthday #mentalhealth #submitthestigma #mentalhealthawareness
