He was unarguably the first powerlifting superstar in that he was the best lifter in the world when powerlifting became an official sport in 1965, complete with rules and championships. Pat was a powerlifting pioneer, a primordial specialist, a man that built a sensational physique using a simple selection of barebones strength exercises, all done using bar-bending poundage in marathon training sessions. In order to recover from the intense pounding Pat subjected himself to in the weight room on a near daily basis, he purposefully consumed a massive amount of wholesome food and amplified the food intake by drinking 4-6 quarts of whole milk each and every day. His physique and feats captivated an entire generation of young lifters. One and a quarter squats with the SSB and no belt and no hands for fast triples with 515 followed by squat bottoms and some other stuff. One and a quarter squats build up both power and confidence in the hole, and right now the SSB is a necessity as I'm a few weeks out from pec tear number 5. Thankfully this one is partial, so I've been able to hit some back work and several arm and shoulder movements over the last 10 days or so. The exercise pool is smaller than normal, but it's nice to get some training in. Hit some pretty big PR’s. Squats felt somewhat okay so I decided to hit an all time PR of 474 😈. Backdowns of 396 felt great too. Bench definitely needs some work in terms of rehab, shoulder pain was pretty bad today. **When and why should you elevate heels in a squat** I often get asked why I prescribe a heels elevated squat version as part of my client's programming. These have 3 main advantages. . 🔹Increased mobility through the ankle to achieve a greater depth of the movement. . This is more so common for beginners in the early stages of strength training or those who have restricted mobility through there ankle. There are other methods I incorporate in increase ankle mobility, however, this is also a great addition and allows the trainee to train in the full range. . 🔹The aim of the exercise is to have more of a quad dominant focus especially the VMO . Elevating the heels allows for the knees to pass the toes to a greater extent. This increases vastus medialis (VMO) recruitment, which plays an integral to knee stability. Moving your knees over your toes to a greater extent does have a positive effect on your knee stability and is a natural movement that can be found in everyday activities such as taking the stairs. . 🔹Keeps torso in more of an upright position. . Having an upright position through the squat decreases compression of lumbar vertebrae and recruitment of erector spinae. This allows a higher training volume as it won't overload the back in trainees with poorly unconditioned lumbar erectors. . Heels elevated squats are an excellent solution to improve mobility and flexibility in the ankle and hip joint and to optimize knee stability, especially in the beginning with untrained clients or later phases of rehabilitation.
