If the world had xray vision they would see what lies beneath my skin; a newly reconstructed spine. Tonight I took a shower w/ a lot of mom help & I got to see the full length of my scar. Wow...it's a big one at just over 2 ft. I earned this scar & I will wear it proudly w/ all the others. Today as I was flipping through a magazine there wasn't 1 model w/ a scar. Interestingly enough I did see an ad to minimize scar visibility. Why is this? It's nice for one to have the option to minimize their scars if they so choose, but why does our world seem to want the roadmap of our bodies to be covered/minimized? Just something to think about 🤔.. Seeing my scar was like reliving last year all over again. I had similar surgery last Sept. 2017. I'm not one to use products to minimize my scars. My scars make my invisible illness visible & help explain what my body has been through. My body has been through a ton. I'm so proud of it. My body has fought so dang hard to keep up w/ all the medical demands placed upon it due to EDS; most recently, having all that hardware you see on the right, approx 50 screws, 2 rods, a skull plate, & clampy looking things replaced 3 weeks ago. I'm here to show you it's OKAY 👌to keep it real & wear your scars w/ pride. Stand proud w/ who you are & love the skin you're in. You earned those scars. Don't minimize them bc you feel obligated to do so. Minimize them bc it's what YOU want to do. There's a BIG difference between minimizing your scars bc it's what YOU want to do & minimizing them bc you feel pressure to do so. Just another thought to think about 🤔 My scars are my battle wounds. These muscles are located in the area of the low back and have many layers. Some of the muscles are large, torque producing muscles (i.e. the erector spinae) and some are small and have more of a stabilizing role. The multifidus muscle is thought to be one of the most important active stabilizers of the spine, especially in the 'neutral zone' where passive tissues such as ligaments are not on tension. - 🔎Interestingly, individuals with a history of one-sided (unilateral) low back pain can demonstrate atrophy of multifidus on the side where there pain is located. Does your lower back hurt when #squatting? 🏋️‍♂️The overhead squat is amazing for strengthening the back and shoulders, but it requires a lot more mobility than a front or back squat. The point of this video is to show you that you must keep the lower back active at the bottom of a squat. . . If your back hurts when you squat AND you have a butt-wink at the bottom of a squat (rounding the lower back), that is a pretty good indication that you are not keeping the lower back and glutes active at the bottom. Sometimes a butt-wink can be very small and unnoticeable… record yourself from the back and side to see if your lower back moves at all during your squat. . . People often try to squat “ass to grass,” but in doing so, they round their lower back, putting the force of the squat directly into the lumbar spine (lower back) rather than keeping the force distributed evenly through the spine and hips. . . Take note of my depth when I have my lower back rounded vs. when I have my lower back and glutes active. Do you see how I do not actually sit as low in the squat when I keep everything active? Don’t worry about getting as deep as you possibly can, only squat as low as you can while maintaining a neutral curve of the spine and glutes active. . . In an unweighted or very light weight squat, it is usually fine to butt wink and sit in a completely relaxed squat. Many of us spend a lot of time sitting whether it be in the office or just sitting around the house. 🙇🏻‍♀️However, if you are one of these people who spend copious amounts of time sitting then here is some advice to improve your posture . ✅ This one may be a no brainer but limit your time sitting as much as possible and ✅design your workplace (if you're in an office👨🏾‍💻) with the following in mind: . 1️⃣Chairs with lumbar supports have been shown to lower intradiscal pressures compared to chairs without these supports. 2️⃣Chairs with arm rests also reduce pressure in discs. 3️⃣Sitting in a slightly reclined position also lowers disc pressure. (approx. 120 degrees) 4️⃣Choose a chair that is wide enough to keep your knees apart. Because keeping your knees close together makes you prone to slumping over🚶🏾 5️⃣Your chair and desk arrangement should be such that your forearms rest on the desk with your elbows at a 90-degree angle close to your sides. 💪🏼This position reduces stress on the trapezius and surrounding muscles of the upper back and neck.🔥 . Remember that spinal disorders are preventable!🙏🏼Although the dangers of sitting for prolonged periods of time may not seem like a huge issue now but it does have a cumulative effect on the spine over years.👵🏼 . What the heck is neuroplasticity? Some new Marvel movie? Let’s break down the word since doctors always like to sound smarter than they are, neuro is brain, and plasticity or plastic means changing. So the brains ability to change. Before we thought once you had lost cells in the brain, that was it lols like they’re gone forever, now research shows you can actually improve neuroplasticity. One way, in addition to nutrition with BDNFs (let’s save that for a different day), and motion. When you lose motion it’s similar to losing a direction you once used on a road map. Or the lights go out in your house, you know where the circuit breaker is, but in the dark you slammed your shin on the bills in the hallway that you didn’t see. With chiropractic, you can improve neuroplasticity with motion by adjusting the spine. When the spine loses motion it sends bad info to the brain, that bad info gets processed and comes out as bad output or abnormal movements and positions like gait deficits, clumsiness, poor proprioception, poor posture, etc. and that bad motion sends more bad info to the brain, creating a vicious cycle. So with chiropractic we adjust the spine to flip that switch to send positive information up to the brain to get processed so we can have normal regular motion. It gets us out of the sympathetic state into a parasympathetic rest, digest, and repair mode. Ok, these are admittedly horrible quality photos, but in the gym tonight, I recorded my hip thrusts and thought, “Holy crap, my back!!” . NOT curving your back to wrap it around the bench is something I often remind my trainees to avoid when performing hip thrusts. I tell them instead to keeping it flat and teeter it against the bench. . It ensure that you’re using your glutes, rather than back, to power the movement. And it keeps your discs way happier in the long run. . But after seeing the video on the right, it was clear that I needed to take my own advice. . It was super simple to correct (left) and, immediately once I told myself, “Ok, in this set, I’m going to keep my back flat and my ribs flush,” bam. It was done and felt so much better. Of course, I’m going to have to keep reminding myself of the little form tip, but sooner or later, it’ll just be muscle memory. . Form is a constant progression.
