Happy #WorldMentalHealthDay! — It’s almost the end of 2019 and one of the lessons I’ve learned this year is the importance of maintaining my mental health. I had recently went back to school 2 months ago, which is part of the reason why I haven’t been consistent with my posts or even running at all. I even found it hard to find motivation to workout in general. Today’s run has taught me to take care of all the parts of who I am, physically and mentally. There are times where I’m too hard on myself and say I could do/be better, but never follow through on my word. There is always room for more improvement, but always allow yourself to celebrate the small accomplishments (and today’s run was definitely one). I am stronger than who I perceive myself to be. Remember that you are not your thoughts! Stand up for yourself! I have some big goals for the remainder of 2019, including attempting to break 5 minutes in the mile. ⠀ This is something I've done before, and I plan on doing again. I first broke 5 minutes in the mile as a freshman in high school. I ended that season running 4:47. ⠀ Over the next 20 years, I have been under 5 minutes in 17 different years. John ran a freakin' marathon!⠀ ⠀ The guy who kept claiming he "wasn't a runner" just ran 26.2 miles through all 5 boroughs of New York City!⠀ ⠀ Just goes to show that when you have a goal and you put yourself with the right people, anything is possible.

💥It feels really good getting back into the swing of running! One of my favorite ways to get #running speed back into my legs is with striders. After an easy run, I get 4-6 strides, starting easy and gradually getting a little longer and a little faster. By the end, I’m running close to mile race pace. We do speed and striders to make the easy runs feel easier and also to work on good form and turnover. Have you ever done striders?

This picture of me is hanging up on the Transformation Wall at both @burnbootcamphainesportnj and @burnbootcampvoorheesnj and while I couldn't be more proud to have made it there, I've also been approached with some misconceptions . • No, I haven't always looked like this. • It's not "genetic" for me (trust me!) • No, these workouts don't come easy and it took a lot of time to get here. • I was active when I was younger, but no where close to as active as I am now. Everyone's got a story. Mine wasn't always healthy, positive, or loving. It was hateful, restrictive, and dark for a long time. I've been working at this for 4 years and only 2 of them have been with @burnbootcamp My "why" is different, my motivation is different, and my goals are different than they were in 2015 AND in 2017. But as I tell anyone and everyone who asks - you have to just 👏 keep 👏 going 👏 and give yourself grace along the way

Running sucks sometimes. I mean, not entirely— the first 4 miles of my run this morning went great. Got out at sunrise, felt pretty good. Then my legs, worked from the mountains a few days ago, felt like they were cement blocks. And the humidity got to me. And the wonky sleep from jet lag. So the last 3 miles of my run sucked. Felt like I was going to pass out, so I’ve been lying on my floor like this for 10 minutes. Running hurts sometimes! It’s hard sometimes! For me, the heat and humidity shut me down. So frustrating! Who’s with me?!?! But wait - those first 4 miles felt really good. And I feel good now that I haven’t passed out. And, running is part of my every day. So I guess I’ll get out there again tomorrow... #running #stupidhumidity #runsj #keepshowingup #runhappy

Back in college, Coach Marcus O'Sullivan had us train using heart rate monitors. I LOVED it. ⠀ We ran our workouts based on percent of our maximum heart rate. As I got fitter throughout the season, my heart would require less beats to do work and so my paces would get quicker. I was able to run 6 threshold paced miles at under 5 minutes a mile!⠀ ⠀ On my blog today, I wrote about how you can implement heart rate training.
