They will not always be there but when they will, accept them, invite them in, learn more things about them, have some tea! Who knows? did you know that in the absence of concepts for things, our brains/we have a hard time understanding? we are largely verbal creatures & so not having language to communicate what we are experiencing can not only limit our ability to connect with others, but not having the language to understand someone else’s experience can also reaaaalllyy limit our ability to “get it” & be supportive . even aside from providing #emotionalsupport, not having the concepts for things can also limit the degree to which we can connect with & understanding life experiences of others in general - for example, several cultures around the world (the Inuit, the Scots, etc) have more names for snow compared to cultures who live in warmer climates, reflecting the degree to which snow is present in their societies. if you’re from a culture that has only a few words for snow, you may not be able to fully appreciate the nuances of snow compared to people who have more words for this . to help build your repertoire of emotion concepts, stretch your mind: these strategies have been shown to enhance emotional intelligence because they sensitize you to other people’s inner worlds, gives you language in the process, and helps make you more aware of the complexity of emotions in general (for ex: “angry” can be broken down to include “hurt”, “irritated” “betrayed”, “frustrated”, “embarrassed” etc) . #anxiety #depression #psychology #counseling #psychologytips #healing #psychotherapy #therapy #therapytools #copingskills #copingtools #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth #research #miamitherapist #miami #miamipsychologist #emotions #emotional #emotionalintelligence #emotionalawareness #holisticmentalhealth #language #neuroscience #cognitive #cognitivescience

No one is exempt from this strange but irrefutable law of being human - not you, not your therapist, not your friend, not your pastor, not your teacher, not your neighbor - everyone struggles. • Notice I didn't say everyone struggles ALL THE TIME but we do all struggle at least some of the time and, quite often, we struggle a lot of the time. And when you can really let this truth sink deep into your bones it can cut thru shame and lessen the sting of asking for support. • Perhaps, at the end of the day, there are still two kinds of people: people who learn how to take responsibility for their struggles and people who do not. LEARN is the key word here. • Learning how to take responsibility for your struggles is a lifelong learning. It is a moment to moment learning. It is an experience to experience learning. You will get messy and you will mess up (everyone struggles). You will need support. This learning is a significant part of personal integrity. This was SO me. I was a gatherer of gold stars. I loved to receive praise for getting things right. School, university and corporate life all fed my addiction. And I thought, why would therapy be any different? Then I did a counselling degree and my tutor thoroughly called me out on it. Part of training is working in groups, taking turns to be the client and counsellor. He said, 'Lee, stop trying to be the best client. There are no gold stars for it.' Harsh, yes. Also really helpful. Once I realised that my tutors weren't grading me on my self-awareness skills and my awesome insights I could relax and actually do the work. And do it for myself. The thing about therapy is that you could spend the whole session quietly having a cry to yourself and that is STILL good work. Therapy is whatever you need it to be. It might actually be the first place where you've done something that's just for you, without assessment, praise, judgement or external validation.
