Waiting for my car to warm up this morning (it’s that time of year! ❄️) I was looking around and thought I’d share what’s in a ND’s car. It’s probably a little different than yours... or maybe not. 1. Almonds - emergency snack that’s high in healthy fats and protein to keep energy balanced. Eating about 10 in the way home keeps me from digging into the cupboard when I get home. 2. Pur gum (or other aspartame free) - my husband isn’t a huge fan but I like having chemical free options. Many are sweetened with xylitol which has been shown to reduce chance of cavities. (Keep xylitol away from pets) 3. Ancient minerals bath flakes - Epsom salts are high in magnesium, great to add to your bath for relaxation, muscles, sleep, and energy the next day (these just haven’t made it inside yet). 4. Paleo bar - these ones are from Costco but there are lots of options, another emergency snack but this one has sugar. 5. Homeopathic remedies - this isn’t a good way to store them (they should be kept in a cool, dark place) but overflow from my pocket or bag must’ve ended up here. I have Arnica for injury/trauma which I keep around because my kids play sports. I also have Arsenicum which is helpful for upset stomachs and flus (different remedies are indicated for different scenarios). 6. Clean lip balm - again chemical free. I also often have FitGlow Beauty lip balm but I’m not sure where that went. 🤔. 7. Starbucks gift cards ☕️. For emergencies 8. Water bottle (not pictured) - always stainless steel. People say I’m good at explaining things. The reason why is I don’t teach according to any text. I abandoned that kind of thinking when I moved to Asia in 2013. When I was learning yoga I was taught strict alignment and when I began teaching I assumed everything I was taught by the LA yoga community was correct. But when I moved I had 70+ year old ladies in my class doing the postures “wrong”; they were tossing their legs behind their head in a way that my eye was trained to believe would “cause injury.” Fortunately, before I said anything I paused my impulse… these yogis were my elders and clearly, they knew something about the body that I did not. I also have my masters in Traditional Chinese Medicine and right then I saw the manifestation of what I learned in TCM: you cannot hold any two bodies to the same standard. . So last night I felt pretty shitty. I felt tired, overwhelmed and didn’t want to leave my bed. I’ve been working hard but there was absolutely no logic to it. In truth things are pretty great in my life right now. Nevertheless this was how I felt. I realised today as the cloud lifted that although this doesn’t happen very often for me it is REALLY important to acknowledge AND OWN it! Just because I’m a therapist and a coach doesn’t mean my life is perfect. Far from it 😂. Just because I’m often sunny side up doesn’t mean that sometimes I’m not. We’re all human beings with different moods on different days. Not only do I feel that my clients would benefit from normalising their expectations of themselves but last night showed me that I need to do the same!🌦🙃🥰 #mentalhealthawareness #mindfulness #practicewhatyoupreach

We’ve all heard the mottos “practice what you preach” & "lead by example", but do we actually live by these words? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For those of you who know me, it’s probably no surprise to know that I truly believe in the power of healthy habits to prevent & treat chronic disease. Because of this, I find my days filled with conversations about the importance of sleep, exercise, nutrition& social interaction. And while it’s not always easy, I genuinely try to practice what I preach... Want to see a glimpse into a typical day of Laurie Birkholz? Here it is: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Most days I’m 😴 by 9 or 10 p.m., which allows me 7-8 hours of sleep before my alarm goes off at 5 a.m. It’s NEVER easy to get out of bed, even with good sleep, & I have to remind myself how much better I’ll feel if I do it. For me, exercising first thing in the morning works best, as everyone else is still asleep & it is 100% “me time”. (Having my running babes or @purebarreholland pals waiting for me doesn’t hurt either 🙌.) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I also do my best to eat a healthy plant based diet, although I love a good splurge... (Hello 🍔 @coast236!) The motto of my friend, @livinglark, is one I’ve whole-heartedly adopted... (You should totally check her out!)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Finally, I want to emphasize the importance of having strong social connections. I’ll talk more about this in a future post, but there is a TON of research showing that people with strong social connections live longer & healthier lives. I do my best to make sure I surround myself as often as possible with a circle of cool ass humans who make me laugh, let me cry, inspire & motivate AND just simply fill my heart ❤️. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I've given you a little peek into my routine, & I'd love to hear more about you!
