Exercising when you have back pain is generally recommended, since it encourages blood flow and increased circulation. This carries nutrition to the muscles and tissues, to improve your strength and flexibility. Swimming is often recommended for back pain, and for good reason! The anti-gravity effect of water takes the pressure off your spine, which can often mean even chronic sufferers of back pain feel relief in the water. If you’re currently not a regular swimmer, it’s important to take it easy when you first venture into the water - don’t suddenly start doing a high amount of laps. Crucially, the stroke you pick can impact how you feel when getting out of the water. In the video to the ➡️, we discuss what strokes are better for swimming and back pain. Breast stroke can arch the back, which if your back is already overly-arched can cause problems. Equally, having your head above the water during breast stroke does place a lot of strain on the neck. We generally recommend back stroke, as your spine is in a neutral position in the water, and is a simple one to learn if you’re not a swimmer at the minute. How true is this really? 🤔Should I take this for face value? . This page wouldn’t be complete without a post on the research that has been making waves on social media. Time to tackle this giant and risk being roasted by research giants . 1️⃣ This systematic review found low 🤔 quality evidence that greater lumbar spine flexion during lifting was not a risk factor for LBP . To clarify that does not mean there’s high quality evidence to say it is a risk factor, because there ain’t. Dead pigs 🐷 don’t count. One could read this as low quality evidence to say that lifting with a neutral back is safer than a flexed back. This is something that needs to more well known. Also show me a systematic review that doesn’t need more evidence 😂 . 2️⃣ It’s also important to note that no study has looked at lifting objects > 12kg. So we still don’t really know whether it’s safe to lift heavier loads with a flexed spine 😯 . 💪 However we can infer certain conclusions from the research and laws of adaptation. It’s been shown already in powerlifters and trained lifters have roughly 80% if not more of max lumbar flexion during the deadlift. So perhaps it’s a movement like any other movement that needs to be gradually loaded . Now obviously a trained powerlifter’s low back is different to the everyday man’s. . So what can we draw from this? . 😅 Same as what we’ve been saying for ages. Lumbar flexion is a movement just like any other movement. In its extremes and if it’s a load we’re not prepared for, the risk of injury is higher. . ⭐️ The core message of lifting with a straight back is something that has been said over the past years with so much certainty but really doesn’t have much to back it up ⭐️ . Got a box? Lift however is comfortable to you, if you’re lifting for performance, lift however is most efficient for you ☺️ . Campbell, A., Straker, L., & O’Sullivan, P. (2019). With a linear axial load it does not replicate how you would pick up something heavy in a real life scenario. That vertical compression will feed spiral dysfunctions & calcify your thoracolumbar fascia, leaving you unable to rotate, flex & extend like you need to. It doesn't even connect the arm lines! Many strength & conditioning coaches are trying to hold on to this exercise because that's all they know, but when you bring physics & fascia into discussion crickets make themselves known. There are always ways to shock the body and keep it guessing! Try taking a lift you have always done and switch the grip, add a pause or both. Taking from the pages of @that1legmonster and @athleanx , lowering the weight and adding in a pause has helped form become the primary focus, and as an added bonus, engages the core and auxiliary muscles, depending on the lift.
