🔴HOW TO PLANK🔴 by @fittrainers ⠀⠀ A (forearm) plank is a core body exercise that strengthens all of the muscles of the core, gives you a stronger low back, and teaches your body stabilization. The transversus abdominus is the real muscle that gives you a flat belly. This little muscle that sits below the belly button is extremely important for back health and a strong tummy. ⠀ Often when doing ab work people spend most of their time focusing on the front of the abs that you can see- the “6-pack” or the rectus abdominus. However, your transversus abdominus, “low abs” are extremely important for your overall strength and stability. Many people suffer from back problems. Strengthening your low abs is one way to protect your low back from injury and keep you strong. ⠀ Start with 10 seconds. Once you can hold it for that long without letting your back sag or feeling a strain, add ten more seconds. Continue to do this until you have reached a full 60 seconds. Practice the forearm plank 2-3 times a week. ⠀ Here are the steps to performing a forearm plank: ⠀ 1) Begin lying on the floor with your forearms flat on the floor, making sure that your elbows are aligned directly under your shoulders. when it come to the exercise, it's very important to keep the pelvis posteriorly tilted. ⠀ 2) Engage your core and raise your body up off the floor, keeping your forearms on the floor and your body in a straight line from head to feet. Keep your abdominals engaged and try not to let your hips rise or drop. ⠀ Before I clasp my hands together, I would cup them around opposite elbows, roll my shoulders away from my ears and down my back, and then move the elbows accordingly to fill the space of the hands and clasp the hands again without moving the elbows from there. ⠀ Push down on your forearms to keep your shoulders from creeping up next to your ears, and fire up your core to keep the body from dumping down. Remember to breathe! It makes the pose easier to hold if you think “Inhale for strength. Exhale and engage.” ⠀ Hope you liked this one! 💕 It’s just doing the basic things... much, much better 💕 . . Plank pose or Kumbhakasana is an arm balancing yoga pose that tones the abdominal muscles while strengthening the arms and spine. Its name comes from the Sanskrit words "kumbhak," which means "breath retention," and "asana," which means "pose." . . Plank Pose: Step-by-Step Instructions . Step 1 Start in Adho Mukha Svanasana. Then inhale and draw your torso forward until the arms are perpendicular to the floor and the shoulders directly over the wrists, torso parallel to the floor. . Step 2 Press your outer arms inward and firm the bases of your index fingers into the floor. Firm your shoulder blades against your back, then spread them away from the spine. Also spread your collarbones away from the sternum. . Step 3 Press your front thighs up toward the ceiling, but resist your tailbone toward the floor as you lengthen it toward the heels. Lift the base of the skull away from the back of the neck and look straight down at the floor, keeping the throat and eyes soft. . Step 4 Plank Pose is one of the positions in the traditional Sun Salutation sequence. While teaching in South Africa I made time every morning to wake up before the sun and flow. When home in Seattle I usually chase sunsets as I’m getting kiddos off to school in the morning. There really is something magical about waking up for a sunrise when the world around you is still. I really found my breath on this retreat. I found myself feeling more present than ever. It equally felt like it went too fast and that we had never ending hours in each day.
