*PINCHA PRESS DRILLS* . . #angelasyogatutorials . . . . . This is going to be short and sweet, but wanted to share a few thoughts on this pose after teaching it today. . . 1. Pressing into the pose with my head slightly more “tucked in” than I have had in the past. (Thanks to @acromegan) this allowed me to remain less arched in the upper back. I know it looks like my head is resting on my hands, but I promise it is just the angle. This allows me to press and compress my body much easier. When you arch you lose your compression which makes you “hinge” at your hips. This causes the legs to kick out behind you rather than compress towards your midsection on the way up. . . 2. In forearm plank strongly push the floor away and shift forward and then press back. This is the same action you will need in the press. To stay protracted as your shoulders shift forward. . . 3. The next step is to try this action again in dolphin pose! . . 4. Then, tip toe your feet back into forearm plank and then forward into dolphin. All the while continue to press the floor away with your forearms and hands and keep your shoulder blades strongly protracted (spreading away from one another) Resist your shifting your shoulders forward as you walk your feet to your hands. Keep pushing them towards your legs as you engage your core and lift your hips. You will need to find this same resistance of the shoulders when you press up. . . 5. My friend and fellow teacher @buddhiyogini did this entry in class and it is a great way to work the pose if straddle is not your thing. 🙌🤸‍♀️ Good luck! 👍🍀 . #pinchamayurasana #pincha #pinchadrills #yogagirl #inversions #inversionjunkie #yogavideo #yogavideos

Copied from @cyogalife - 😴🤸🏽‍♀️🛫 Day 2️⃣0️⃣ of #PressingDreams with @cyogalife ➡️ #ForearmBalance or #PinchaMayurasana variant 🛫🤸🏽‍♀️😴 Time to move up to Pincha but, if you feel you need to keep working on your Headstands instead, please feel free to do so. If you want to focus more on your Handstand #practice, I’d still recommend you do this version first (it’ll give you pointers and more time to think what should be done) then attempt it in Handstand. This moment in the pic can be seen on the way up or down. Coming down is easier: just go into Forearmstand whichever way you’d like, bend one knee, tucking heel to butt, squeeze inner thighs together and project through the other leg. Start to bend at the flexors, hips over shoulders, spine straight, pull navel in and lower, as slowly as possible, legs to floor. At some point, unless you’re incredibly strong (not my case as you can see in the pic), because of the weight of the legs coming down, you’ll likely have to send shoulders over elbows. That’ll build up tremendous strength and stamina so, don’t quit, even if your face is VERY close to the mat!! To press up this way, from Dolphin, walk the feet as close to the elbows as you can, tuck one foot to butt (use that bent leg as a little antenna, to help come up easier!), pull navel in, keep pushing away from the floor, always thinking of lifting from the sacrum, doing a posterior tilt in the pelvis (almost like a small backbend) so the spine is fully engaged and it’s more organic to press up. For those that find pressing into this #inversion harder than Handstand, remember to stretch the shoulders before... BIG difference!! Comment below what problems you encountered and keep at it!! Inversion poses require open shoulders and hamstrings and an active core as well as a desire to overcome challenge. In an inversions conditioning class @theriveryoga , @yogawithjoyjoy asked us what our favorite inversion was. I honestly answered that I didn’t like any of them! They are challenging and I have a lot of negative self-talk around my ability and strength to be successful in inversions and arm balances. I also knew that I needed to keep working: to do inversions anyway. Another student commented that she appreciated my vulnerability because it’s part of why we all show up for yoga. Yoga doesn’t make our lives easier, but it teaches us how to confront challenge and discomfort in a way that is constructive and strength building. Self-study is a critical component to this growth, and vulnerability allows us to find opportunities for strength. It might be challenging, do it anyway. #yoga #denveryogateacher #pinchamayurasana

😴🤸🏽‍♀️🛫 Day 2️⃣0️⃣ of #PressingDreams with @cyogalife ➡️ #ArdhaPinchaMayurasana aka #DolphinPose variation at the wall 🛫🤸🏽‍♀️😴 The wall is a wonderful tool to help cultivate the strength and develop the body awareness necessary to try challenging transitions like lowering into a half pike in #handstand and #forearmbalance; let’s recruit the help of #PaulTheWall for today’s modification. . Measure one leg’s distance away from the wall by sitting down facing the wall, legs straight, feet flat on the wall, and mark the line of your hips — turn around and place your elbows on that line shoulders’-width apart. Parallel your forearms or clasp your hands, curl your toes under at the floorboard, and lift your hips up and back. Walk your feet up the wall to the height of your hips to create an L-shape as you sink your chest back between the window of your arms to open the shoulders and upper back. Carefully lift one leg at a time, keeping both knees straight and sending the lifted leg straight up and maybe even slightly overhead. Make sure both legs, especially the top one, are incredibly active — one of the major obstacles to finding balance upside down early on is a lack of proper engagement through the legs, making them dead weight rather than recruiting the lower body to stabilize the entire pose. .
