Tight hamstrings can contribute to plantar fasciitis, lower back pain and glute pain. Tight hip flexors can lead to back pain and weakened gluteus muscles that can cause serious knee injuries such as patellofemoral stress syndrome (PFSS), iliotibial band friction syndrome (ITBS), patellar tendonitis, and bursitis of the knee. 🔷Not only do tight hamstrings and hip flexor muscles contribute to foot, knee, glute and back pain when they are tight, they may also prevent us from mastering the splits. perhaps the idea of attempting the splits scares you, but the pose can be extremely beneficial.🔷 The splits is an effective pose for runners. Besides the mental barriers it forces us to overcome, it stretches the following muscles: Hip flexors (TFL, psoas ) Glutes Hamstrings Quadriceps Adductors (groin muscles) Calves .. ✅Stretching your middle split can benefit the rest of your body's flexibility and conditioning your core. This exercise improves our walking as well as hiking, climbing, and so on. Also, it teaches us to absorb impact and decelerate, which is very valuable for dancers and athletes. Sometimes I wonder what is the exact amount of hours per week my child should spend practicing their sport of choice? Perfecting one movement inevitably involves repetition of the same action over and over and over again...it’s probably good to have some sort of counter balance to that training, right? Since my son is a cross country runner and I am a Pilates Instructor, I have some opinions on the matter 😇🙌 In Pilates, the sole focus is on slow, deliberate, and appropriate movement. Whether circling the legs separate from the pelvis or contracting the inner core to help stabilize a position, each movement is thoughtful. Pilates for runners teaches you how not to cheat, using sheer strength and will. It helps to identify those inner weaknesses in the stabilizing muscles. Often, as our running body fatigues, running form suffers. Many times we collapse in on ourselves, with the upper body slumping–hoping that our legs will just carry us to the finish line. What we fail to recognize is that our body is a complete system. Once one part is compromised, the rest follows suit. If we lose our posture, our legs can’t function to their full potential because of added strains. The benefits of Pilates include emphasizing proper posture during every movement. It trains the proper alignment of head, neck, spine, and pelvis throughout each exercise. It also builds strong core strength. Strengthening those muscles through slow and deliberate Pilates classes allow us to hold the same correct alignment through any run, no matter the distance. Garage Pilates offers 30 minute youth Pilates classes every Wednesday at 3:15 PM, 4 PM and 4:30 PM as well as Thursday evenings at 6 PM.
