• C R I S S C R O S S • • • Finally we have the criss cross an exercise which provides an additional challenge for the obliques and deep abdominals, these muscles are very important for stabilising the spine before moving the arms and legs or before impact in activities such as lifting objects, running, and jumping. • Lying on the back with the legs in double table top, lift the head and chest off the floor as in single leg stretch. Exhale and straighten one leg lengthening the toes away whilst simultaneously rotating the upper torso towards the bent knee, inhale to exchange legs and bring the torso back to the centre. Exhale and repeat to the other side. Did you know there’s a little muscle to the inside of your leg, just above your knee that helps track the kneecap at 45 degrees and the last 3 degrees of knee extension? It’s called the vastus medialis oblique, or VMO for short. Getting this little dude to engage can sometimes reduce knee pain and discomfort. How can you do that? With exercises like this one. Now, goes without saying that it takes more than an isolated leg lift to for knee health and overall strength matters, but this can be a great part of a warm up to get things online. Another great thing about this exercise? It also strengthens your hip flexors, which can reduce hip stiffness (Yep you read that right)! That being said, there’s no magical exercise to solve all your movement problems. HOWEVER when you package up the right exercises into smart programming, it’s possible to reduce hip + knee discomfort and improve hip flexibility/mobility. 💁🏼‍♀️ And if you’re like give me some of that please, then I’ve got good news for you. I’ve reopened the cart on Hips Don’t Lie: an at home program to help you (or your clients!) reduce hip stiffness, build foundational hip strength, and improve flexibility. • S T R A I G H T L E G S T R E T C H • • • Following on from the single leg stretch we have the straight leg stretch, a similar exercise only both legs are straight as the name suggests. This adds an additional benefit for hamstring flexibility and the lowering of a straight leg requires more stabilisation from the abdominals. • Lying on the back with the legs in double table top, nod the chin towards the chest and curl up to peel the shoulder blades off the mat. Straighten both legs drawing one in towards the chest and the other lengthening away ensuring the lower back stays in contact with the mat, hold behind the thigh or ankle if you have the flexibility. Exhale and draw the belly button towards the spine while gently pulling the top leg towards the forehead for two gentle pulses.
