Breathe. Stress is perhaps modern day's biggest threat to staying healthy. The health risks and conditions that arise from stress are numerous. While we generally consider the physical maninfestations of stress such as hypertension, heart conditions etc. as the dangers to be wary of, the damage it brings about to mental health is overlooked. Selfcare is key! . When we start to neglect our wellbeing, everything else gets harder. . . Concentration, patience, problem-solving, empathy, happiness. . . It’s been a long first full week but I got through it. But, I don’t want to just survive, I want to thrive. . . I had to check myself and do some selfcare at work. 🧘🏻‍♀️ I shut the lights off, leaving just the natural light. Sat on a cushion on my classroom floor and did some deep breathing. Just a minute or two. 🌬 Did I get back to “normal”? Was my mind clear? Not quite 😅 . . It did help me release some of that tension and allow me to be present for my last period class. 😬 . . Make it a priority, everyday, to take time for yourself. If even for a minute. It takes time but will make the hard stuff easier!

Even the gym looks nice in the evening sunlight. #nofilter Can’t think of a better way of spending my Friday evening. I even multi task tonight and get the car cleaned while I’m having my PT session. This involves walking extra steps round the back of the gym so putting in extra effort... And it’s cardio and leg day. I thought walking from the car cleaners to the changing room might be enough of a warm up but apparently not. Start off on a bike. A static one of course. I’m going as fast as I can but my left foot keeps sliding off the pedal. No matter how tightly I’m strapped in, superglue is the only thing that will hold my foot in the right place. Hardly makes for a smooth 10-minute cycle! Move onto leg presses. Stupidly admit that I managed 30kg by myself earlier in the week. After the awkward cycling and a few sets of leg presses, my legs don’t know what’s happened... Still my legs are treated to new machines. Actually, it turns out I can’t manage it all so I now have gym homework - yes, I have to do exercise at home now too. Meant to do more cardio on the seated cross trainer but they’re both taken. Back to the bloody bike then. Get up to speed and there goes my foot. Consider asking the other people to move off - is it a reasonable adjustment? Like I need a seat on the train, I need the seated cross trainer.... Get off the bike. I don’t think I’ll ever walk normally again. I’m rewarded with the power plate. I decide I need this in my life every day. A few seconds of vibration and I feel back to normal. Can I figure out a way of getting my neck and shoulders on this? (I’m not that daft!) Oh, bugger, I have to walk further back to my car. The car cleaners ask doubtfully if I’ve been to the gym. Excuse me... I’m not always red and sweaty, you know. And I have just done a session with my personal trainer. Cheeky sods! I am soooo grateful for my physical condition. I have really put this body through some serious torture for most of it's use. And, in 3 short years, showing it a little attention and love, and I've never felt better. I knew that I stressed about my physical condition most of my life, but I had no idea how much stress it was. What an emotional relief it is to know that if this vessel lets me down, it won't be because I haven't tried to take care of it. As a result, my emotional and mental health have never been better. Maybe my past poor health will come back to get me someday, but I'm doing everything I can about that now, so, I'm at peace. I have a few accountability buddies to help me stay on track. 💜💜 The sounds of a creek rippling, waves crashing, wind through the trees along with the music of nature's creatures very soothing and grounding. Music is also a go-to for me to soothe my soul or get the energy flowing! 💜💜 I'm loving books in all forms & podcasts to keep learning or experiencing something new. I've been reading mostly non-fiction (eg on the effects of trauma, Michelle Obama's reading of "Becoming", and much about bees and beekeeping). Lately, we've been listening to a podcast via the CBC called "Someone Knows Something" - created by an investigative journalist (David Ridgen) who has been following up on cold cases. It's fascinating. What do you do to keep sharp and expand your mind? 💜💜 At this stage of life (midlife, retired from the corporate grind, enjoying life in the country, beekeeping, doting on our grandson etc. ) I'm always thinking about how I can have a positive impact on those around me ... literally and virtually. My deepest desire is to find the good in everyone I meet and shine a light on their gifts so that they can see them too AND believe them. We all deserve to believe in ourselves and "midlife" seems to be a season where we're increasingly ready to give ourselves a break, make ourselves a priority and be willing to tune in to what we want and don't want in life.
