Avoiding Injury is the name of the game-Injury Prevention! . If I had to guess, I would say out of all the people I work with/have worked with I’d guess 85% of them have had some degree of lower back pain. . That 85% generally did the things society does that creates the muscle imbalances that cause people to have pain. Sitting or standing for prolonged periods, overall tightness, and favoring one side or the other in the hips. . I believe in solving the problem as a whole-looking at the entire picture. This includes direct lower back exercises. Start out with the basics and advance them as needed! This exercise is more on the advanced side because of the stability involved as well as the isometrics. Thanks to @drnadolsky for the excellent post! ____________ In school, we learned of the different ways to categorize food and that how we label food often affects how our relationship with food is. Changing people's relationships with food is, in my mind, the only way to create lasting change. ____________ I dislike labels that deem a food inherently bad. Terms like "cheat meal," "unhealthy," & "bad." On the surface, those labels seem harmless, but by attaching negative connotations to them, every time we eat them we risk having a sense of guilt. Like we're doing something bad and need to make up for it somehow later; this can lead to yo-yo dieting, exercise bulimia, or binging and falling off completely. ____________ I also don't like phrasing food as rewards. As if you have to "earn it." This can make exercise seem like a chore or punishment, as mentioned before with exercise bulimia. ____________ Rather than using those labels, I prefer saying foods are either "healthy" or "fun." Meaning there's nothing wrong with having something occasionally, just that we can't do it all the time. I also make sure to specify that "healthy" is a range. For each client, I prefer asking them what their definition of healthy is, and invariably it usually comes down to any food that's high in nutrients, relatively low in calories, and is a stereotypical "whole" food. Eating more of those foods is what I want us to focus on. ____________ "Fun" foods are just that. Foods that can and should be consumed occasionally that allows us as people to enjoy life. Foods that allow us to have a social life; foods that have a personal significance even if they aren't what some would call "healthy." There's nothing nutritious about party food, but there's definitely something unhealthy about choosing to miss your friends' birthday celebrations because there's no food there that you can eat. ____________ As a coach, as a Dietetics student and eventual RD, I encourage the addition of healthy food, not the vilification of other food. Like I tell my clients, "We're going to work on giving the body what it needs, while also leaving room for what you, the person inside, want to eat." (Old post)
