Post 50: Knock-Knees🦵🏼 - Have you noticed your child’s knees consistently touch when they are standing or walking, yet their ankles do not touch? Do they present with abnormal gait with clumsiness or frequent falls? If so, a possible reason for this could be Genu Valgum, or more commonly known as “Knock-Knees.” - This condition is usually apparent around age 2-4 yrs old, and typically self-corrects by age 7 or 8. However, if the condition appears later or seems to be worsening, it may be a sign there is an underlying bone issue occurring. Knock-knees is actually normal during early childhood as it may help a child maintain their balance when learning to walk & it is usually seen more often in girls than boys. Most children actually have knock-knees to some degree for a period of time. At age 3 over 20% of children have at least a 5cm gap between their ankles, and by age 7 only 1% of kids have this gap still. - Potential causes of knock-knees: Knock-knees are usually part of the normal growth and development of the legs. Some cases, especially in a child who’s 6 or older, may be a sign of an underlying bone disease, such as osteomalacia or rickets. If a child is obese this could also contribute to knock-knees— or can cause gait problems that resemble but is not actually knock-knees. The condition might also result from an injury to the growth area of the tibia. - Non-surgical Treatment options are available along with Physical Therapy to help with: • Wearing leg braces/orthotics to improve alignment • Orthopedic shoes with heel wedge or arch pad • Gait train and restore muscle strength In more serious cases, doctors might recommend surgery to help straighten the bones of the legs. 🦴 Physical therapy is usually also utilized after surgery to regain strength and teach proper ambulation.🙌🏼 - All content is for educational purposes, not to diagnose. 11 year old female patient with 1 year of left hip pain. X Ray findings are consistent with Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis (arrow). About Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis To understand SCFE, it helps to know a little about the hip joint. The hip is a ball-and-socket joint, which means that the rounded end of one bone (in this case, the "ball" of the thighbone) fits into the hollow of another bone (the acetabulum, or cup-shaped "socket" of the pelvis). Ball-and-socket joints offer the greatest range of movement of all types of joints, which explains why we can move our legs forward, backward, and all around. Kids and teens who are still growing also have a growth plate at the top of the thighbone, just under the "ball" portion (also known as the femoral head) of the joint. This growth plate is called the physis and it's made of cartilage, which is weaker than bone. The job of the physis is to connect the femoral head to the thighbone while allowing the bone to lengthen and grow. In SCFE, the femoral head of the thighbone slips through the physis, almost the way a scoop of ice cream might slip off a cone. Sometimes this happens suddenly — after a fall or sports injury, for example — but often it happens gradually with no prior injury. #pediatrics #ortho #orthopedics #hip #pain #hippain #peds #pedspt #sportsmedicine #athletictraining #pvhmc #pomonavalleysportsmedicine #pomonavalleyhospital #sportsmedicinemd

Post 49: Equipment Highlight!😊🙌🏼 - I’m sure many pediatric PT’s & parents have seen tables similar to this, but I had to mention how versatile it can be! From personal experience working with these tables, it can be a great tool for a variety of patient treatment plans. This toy can be used for older kiddos in seated positions or for younger children in kneeling or standing positions. It requires the ability to sit upright and maintain balance, proper placement of legs, use of hands for play while sitting, and can even be used as “furniture” for cruising or to pull up onto to transition from sit➡️kneel➡️stand. - If you have any fun ideas or suggestions, feel free to comment how you have used or seen this toy be used! 🤗 - All content is for educational purposes, not to diagnose. I finished phase 1 on VACATION. Swipe for my progress 👉🏻⠀ ⠀ I used to think people who worked out on vacation were crazy. Also people who worked out just because 😂⠀ ⠀ I’ve been told I don’t need to workout because I’m already small, but that’s not the goal here. That’s not what working out is for. Not for this gal.⠀ ⠀ Exercise is SO much more than losing weight, toning up, & results.⠀ ⠀ It’s therapy.⠀ It’s creating habits early to live a healthy lifestyle LONGTERM.⠀ It’s my time to fill my cup up.⠀ It gives me energy.⠀ ⠀ August’s round of The Be 100 Strength Tribe is starting tomorrow. Don’t get so wrapped up in the big goal that you forget to be present now and enjoy the moments and have fun along the way ✌🏻 . The process is what makes it all worth it....in life, as a parent, as a worker, with your health, with your fitness... . Celebrate those small victories. Be proud of yourself showing up today when all you wanted to do was turn off the ⏰ and you chose to get up and move your body and plan good fuel for the day. . This is my favorite part of coaching and being a PT. Helping others celebrate those small wins because you may have not made it to that mile marker 3 yet or workout minute 10 without stopping or for my kids walking.... but LOOK 👀 at the things you can do and get EXCITED 😆✌🏻💥 . . If it brings you joy to celebrate and lift others up, I need you on my wing 😘 3 mentorships available and I’m ready to help you hustle 🙌🏻 #findyourfire

Post 47: iLS (aka Integrated Listening Systems) 🤩🎧🎼🎶 - Have you heard about iLS as an intervention in pediatric populations? It is a fairly new tool that began in 2007 and is now supported by research showing positive effects in treating children. So what is it? 🤔 iLS is a method that integrates music, movement and language exercises for the purpose of improving brain function. Some clinics use this tool with co-treatments including OT’s or speech therapists - what a great way to utilize interprofessional care & education! 🤗 - From the iLS website they state that iLS is based on the concept of neuroplasticity that we can change our brain & essentially re-wire it through specific and repeated stimulation. Just as we are able to build strength and endurance with physical exercise, we are also able to build neurological pathways and synaptic activity at any age.🧠💪🏼 - So how does this work? iLS has a few different tools that can be used, but one that I see often in clinic involves using headphones 🎧 that play music🎵 while a child is performing a task. The goal of iLs therapy is to improve the neurophysiological foundation for integrating sensory input by using specific sound frequencies, vibrations and patterns to stimulate the brain. - Some benefits of iLS include: • Improve information processing • Reduce stress & anxiety • Trains ability to focus and concentrate • Increase self confidence - The scope of applied treatments may help with: • Autism • ADHS • Learning or auditory processing abilities • Sensory processing • Speech or reading difficulties - If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask or look up the iLS website integratedlistening.com to learn more! ☺️👍🏼 - Remember: Baby steps daily can lead to big changes overall! 👶🏻👣 - #Babystepsphysicaltherapy #babystepsPT #pedspt #pediatricphysicaltherapy #ptawareness #physicaltherapy #physicaltherapist #dpt #pt #peds #pediatrics #babies #physio #physiotherapy #physiotherapist #pediatricphysiotherapy #pedsphysiotherapy #health #healthcare #rehab #exercise #motivation #dedication #ils #ilstherapy #speechtherapy #ot #integratedlisteningsystem

Wanted to share about #sma since August is #smaawarenessmonth but I think @savedbygrace_sma_type1 probably says it better than I would! ・・・ August is recognized as SMA awareness month and as a mother to the most gorgeous and brilliant little girl who also happens to be fighting SMA I want to share our story, fight, and hope in Jesus this month. . . To kick off SMA awareness with a bang we went and started the process to get Graces first powerchair today! It's exciting, exhausting and deflating all in the same moment. Grace LOVES her mobility and oh man if you just could of seen her light up today playing with powerchairs. We can not wait for the day hers actually arrives and we of course ordered it in #curesma purple 💜 . . Spinal muscular atrophy is a rare neuromuscular condition which causes progressive muscle wasting which usually effects crawling, walking, arm, hand and neck movements, breathing and swallowing. There are 4 types of SMA with type 1 being the most common and most severe. Symptoms usually begin before 6 months of age. The mind always remains unaffected and children with SMA are incredibly bright, sweet and sensitive. . . #curesma #sma #smatype1 #smastripes #nevergiveup #endsma #smaresearch #spreadlove #powerchair #koalapowerchair #twins #physicaltherapy #pedspt #wheelchairgirl #wheelchairsarefreedom #lookathergo #pedsot #kidstherapy #instamom
