It’s quite the toe & foot stretch...everything else just feels good! We start by laying on our back like you are going into bridge pose, keep working the feet under the bum as the knees reach to the floor & the back arches up. The head rests on the crown lightly. Lift the arms overhead only if all feels good. This is Day 4 of #bty84 #worksinprogress #yogachallenge Finding all the different ways into my own body’s comfy TipToe #CouchPose. (SWIPE LEFT). Yes, #Prapada #Paryankasana literally means bed or couch/sofa. Think of it as a reclined backbend with a big stretch of feet, ankles, chest, hips, knees, neck, quads and back. . . . Now go back to that list and make accommodations for the parts that need extra support. For me, a combination of age/menopause and habits/activities that round the spine has reduced my spinal elasticity. To accommodate for a lesser degree of arch in my back I use a wall, blocks, bridge pose and yes, a real couch as I work towards this shape. The transition from bridge pose seemed natural for my own body but it may feel awkward & be unavailable for others. When I transitioned from bridge, I mindfully drop gently onto the crown of my head without dumping weight onto my neck. I do this by lowering onto my elbows, ground through my thighs & feet. I recruit back muscles to lift my sternum and because I warmed up using blocks, I am aware of my range of motion. I’m not gonna lie. The version on the couch was my favorite but I don’t think that’s what they had in mind when this posture was created. ... Much gratitude to my teacher & mentor #jennprughyoga for all the learnings on & off the mat. . . . Wherever you are, focus less about the desired shape and more on lengthening the front body from chest to hips. Think about pulling your hips down into your tailbone & anchoring your femurs down. If it’s available to you, hold on to the opposite elbows and rest them above the head. Here’s a tip: if you bring the arms out to the side and then grab the elbows overhead, that might allow you to rest the elbows closer to the floor than if you first grabbed the elbows and then extend them over your head. But there are many variations to the shape of the hands and arms here too. #breathetogetheryoga #whatthewhat #comfycouch

. Breathe Together - Summer Instagram challenge - Day 4 . Today’s pose = Paryankasana (Tip Toe Couch Pose) . Today is the full expression of Tip Toe Couch Pose as the continuation from yesterday’s prep pose. . Yesterday I was having that familiar voice in my head that said, “I have tight hips and tight lower back, I won’t even get close to feeling this pose.” . However, the great thing about this works in progress challenge is seeing a community of people contributing where they are and creative ideas for feeling this pose. Last night I watched @jennprugh video with using her wheel. Such a great idea! . My toes were not having it today after yesterday’s intense stretch. I was able to warm up my hips and lower back using the wheel almost like a massager. . This is where I landed today. Feet tucked, wheel assisted and comfortable in this edge of backbend. . Prapada Paryankasana - 2 ways! // Phew! This pose is a big experience! I did it twice, with the toes turned under while sitting on my heels (vajarasana) and with the toes turned under and the feet adjacent to my hips (virasana). // I actually did the virasana variation 1st, over the weekend (that's the second video, 3rd pic), because when I think of regular Paryankasana, the legs are in virasana. This pose was quite intense - especially on my outer ankles and shins. I know that might not be what you expected me to say, but my outer shins often fatigue and ache in poses. Years ago my teacher Kofi had us do seated virasana with our toes turned under, and it was SO hard for me - my ankles bowed under the pressure and my shins were too weak to provide resistance. I set to working on it. Amazingly, and unexpectedly, it completely transformed my full backbend. I learned how to grip my outer shins and extract stability from them and it was a real game changer. // So this pose reminded me of that all over again. You can't hear me saying "oh wow!" because of how intense it was! You'll see me keep adding more blocks until I'm sufficiently supported. // The other big challenge for me here is getting my arms to go further overhead. They just stop!! // The first video was me yesterday, realizing I could do this pose while sitting on heels! OH HELLO FRIEND. I must say, this variation is available "off the shelf" for me and I loved it! A great mix of release and activation. Surrender and vigilance. // Both of these seem worth working on and exploring more, so that's something to look forward to. 6.3 Tiptoe Couch Prep Prapada #paryankasana translates to "couch pose on tiptoe." Some instructors liken this pose to a "hero pose with broken toes." There are similar objectives as a quadriceps stretch and hip opener, but unlike hero where the feet are out to the side of the thighs and the body lies supine on the ground, in couch the feet are together and the weight of the body is equally supported on the balls of the feet and the crown of the head. This creates a more extreme stretch across the entire front side of the body and requires a solid headstand practice for safety. The knees are supposed to come down to lightly touch the ground when you are flexible enough; the glutes rest on the heels in this pose. Most of us are not that flexible. Even those who can access a full upward wheel may not be prepared for the extra leverage of the heels demanding more length than usual from the quads. This pose should be renamed "cranky quads." Trust me! After a couple days of exploring this pose, my cranky quads are a-complaining (but in a good way)! And this is why I love the summer challenge: to go deep into the mechanics and sensations of one pose at a time. Tomorrow we attempt the actual pose. Today we warm up and try to feel where we are going. Prapada Paryankasana Prep // well here's a pose I hadn't ever done before ... A prelude to tomorrow's also new-to-me pose. It's a bit like vajarasana mixed with ustrasana, with a sprinkle of toe-crusher mixed in! I don't actually mind the toe crunching too much, and the expansion across the quads is readily available to me... But what's hardest and most unresolved for me here are the patterns of energy and momentum in the head/neck/shoulders. You can see me working too hard and looking uncomfortable doing it (😂). Head back? Neck engaged? (I tried this, but watching the video I only see a moment or two that look like a quality alignment) This is something I am actively working on across my practice right now - how to experience more skillful freedom in my neck so that my upper back can continue to emerge... Today’s pose for #bty84 is Prapada Paryaṅkāsana. For those of you who don’t know me, I’m a Sanskrit beginner student (and love learning it)... it’s something I’ve been attempting to learn for 7 years and just over the past few I’ve taken 3 courses (with both Ramana Erickson and Shivani Hawkins.) I can barely read it (at best I can identify deities in temples by reading the nameplates) so I’m not in a position to even say that the following is correct. I rely a lot on the internet and as we all know there is false information (and typos) everywhere... I thought every once in a while during this #worksinprogress challenge I would explore the Sanskrit names for these āsanas and do something artistic with them when inspired. If there is a typo in this please let me know and I will fix it. I’ve been humbled over and over so I don’t mind being corrected. As most of you know, if you say or write the word incorrectly in Sanskrit you could end up saying a word with the opposite or different meaning. This is especially important when chanting the names of God/Goddess. Those little marks on the letters help you to know if it is a long or short vowel or where to put your tongue as you pronounce it if it is a consonant. If one is to learn to be a yoga teacher or a chant leader - please make the effort to learn Sanskrit... it makes a difference for so many reasons! ✨ . Day 3 | Preparation for Tiptoe Couch, Prapada Paryankasana. Taken by @kayleedelfin right after Yoga Fusion class which incorporated Qi Gong, meditation & other asana exploration. As with probably all of the 84 poses that this challenge will offer, it will be wise to properly warm up before doing them. Tomorrow will be the full version of this pose...it’s one that I have always loved but with my hip, we shall see if it’s a good idea! Just doing this gives a wonderful opening to my feet & spine. I love back bending & shoulder openers like this but again have to keep my core engaged so I don’t take it in the lower back. Day 2. So after my the zombie slumber I am now back to days, well almost. Those swing shifts are always so hard! Such is the life of a nurse. We run some crazy hours maybe that’s why we are crazy and run off coffee, surely we are a special breed of human. So yesterday was day 1 of prep and I had this big write up I was planning but I cut my time for my workout pre work short so I had to hustle and then at work last night I had a very ill patient sooo left me little to no time for my IG life, but that’s ok. I still got it done, meals on point (crushing meals while charting) and rocked day 1 and now day 2, and smiling ear to ear. Sent my first posing video and well we gonna polish it up a lot and that’s ok, practice makes perfect! Loving the decision on my coach already so supportive and involved, “we gonna do some damage” @amerthehammer . Already feeling the love hammer fitness community wise and loving this. However being part of this family means I put in the work everyday, daily Journaling and accountability is part of the process and much more, quite impressed by the detail that is emphasized for their athletes and speaks volumes when you see their physiques. So gonna journal for yesterday today and today’s of course and update my fitness pal and sit down and write out the remainder of my workouts, and get my calendar organized. So I have a journal, fridge calendar tracker, (system of post it’s for changes, successes and comments, and a gym planner. May be a bit obsessive but Melly came to play hahah! So today was shoulders and post lift cardio (cardio is way down) but the one I do is more focused (glute mindful/targeting) and then a nice long stretch after. Feeling amazing. Gonna get freaky and shreddy 🔪. TÉCNICA 1.- Siéntese en Virasana. 2.- Espire y eche el cuerpo hacia atrás. Eleve el cuello y el pecho y, arqueando la espalda, apoye la cumbre de la cabeza en el suelo. Ninguna parte del tronco deberá tocar el suelo. 3.- Doble los codos. Agarre con la mano derecha el brazo superior izquierdo cerca del codo y con la mano izquierda el brazo superior derecho también cerca del codo.
