On Monday, I did my @fellowflowers Courage virtual run. The green courage flower was not my first flower, but it was the one I latched on to the first time I trained for anything, my first half marathon in 2015. Turns out, the message was probably the one I needed all along, not just in running, but in life. “Fall in love with who you were meant to be” and “I was born to do this” were phrases that ended up being central in my running journey and personal evolution. Running helped me remember that one of my life cornerstones is to help others. Once I emerged from the survival-mode period with two young children, I was able to get back to that part of me. My many volunteer roles have brought me back to my true self. It takes courage to stand up, speak out, and take up space, and keep going when things get difficult. But - it’s worth it all. Today's intention was: Gratitude. We're always focused on what lies ahead in our journey. But how often do we take a moment to truly appreciate the place we're standing in now? Post-marathon, I'm often focused on how much I can't run, or what I'm limited from. Today I thought about what I'm capable of, how grateful I am to even be running at all. • My run was 6.2 miles @ 7:48 min/mile avg. It was supposed to be easy, but I wanted to let my legs fly and let my HR rise a little. Running into the weekend like.... • One more hard workout till taper! • This training cycle has been one of the hardest. Training 80-100 miles a week during a stressful season of transition and a Miami summer is no joke. I’ve cut back mileage and spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to recover when everyday is a physical beat down in the heat. I’ve told myself if CIM goes well it’s going to be by God’s grace. Because I’ve worked hard, but definitely have not been able to do things according to plan. • One more 15 mile threshold then it’s taper time! I really believe God wants to show himself to me in a new way at this race, but I am excited for a little R&R. I remind myself when things don’t go according to plan that there’s grace and always something to learn. It’s not always easy in the moment, but in the end things always work together for good. It’s often just taking one step at a time, trusting the process. I have to admit, I’m confident but also a little terrified to run another competitive marathon in a couple weeks-especially when I’m trying to hit a new level of fitness. But I’m so blessed to be on this journey doing what I love! So onward! The past 2 weeks I’ve been hiding from the world of running (aka not running) due to a very nagging Achilles injury that just got too dicey to deal with. • I dropped the rest of my fall season (Monterey Bay Half & CIM) in order to fully rest, recover, and get healthy for the 2020 Marathon Olympic Trials in the end of February. • As much of a bummer as it is to drop races and take time off…I take it as a blessing in disguise. I was super happy about the mental and physical reset. • For the past 2 years and 2 months, I have been in a constant sympathetic “fight or flight” state, in other words very “sympathetic dominant.” Basically I am always on the go, and this increases many systems in my body, which over time wears me out physically, mentally, and emotionally. I have taken well over 300 exams if you were to count them up from when I started chiropractic school (and that doesn’t include national board exams). Stress is the real deal. Sleep has been an issue for me as well because school and life have me very anxious. Major stress + little sleep + loads of mileage/training + burnout = increased inflammation, decreased muscle recovery, and an injury. • What do you do in this scenario? • Over the past few weeks, I have been trying to stimulate my parasympathetic nervous system…aka I have been training my mind and body to CHILL OUT. With activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, a decrease in tone of skeletal muscles is triggered giving our muscles a much needed chance to relax. Meditation, breathing through my diaphragm with exercises, loads of movement/rehab, and some much needed sleep has me back up and running again. • Injuries are a blessing. They may seem inconvenient and negative, but it’s an opportunity for us to become better. Pain from an injury is a sign for positive growth and change. • Achilles injuries can be very stubborn, and my patience is wearing thin. So, the mantra for my buildup to the olympic trials is: “Little victories every day.” #injuryrecovery #feeltohealyourself #oiselle #headupwingsout #hautevolée #marathontraining #endurance #endurancetraining #positivevibes
