#learningtoeat . I’ve made so many discoveries about eating the last few days since my injury. My training as a feeding therapist and what I would look for when assessing a child having feeding difficulties has become a lived experience. . Motor planning which is how the body plans muscle actions and sequences what to do, how to do it before carrying out the action, is complex requiring integration of the brain and senses. My body is currently working so much harder to manage using one hand and of all the tasks I have to do, eating has been the most challenging. . Postural stability when sitting at the table is compromised when you’re relying only on arm to do the work of feeding. Having the trunk completely stable helps head control supporting breathing and jaw control. Trying to pick up food with a fork or spoon requires problem solving of how much pressure to apply and balance of movement. I find myself chasing a piece of food around the plate to get it on the cutlery to eat. I also find my eyes working harder at watching the fork move to my mouth so I don’t drop the food with my opposite hand. . At the moment I’m experiencing poor planning and sequencing. I have to think much harder to complete new physical tasks. My brain isn’t used to having my left hand working as the dominant side, as sensory integration has to be re-sequenced and planned for execution. . So here is my one handed salad that I made today for lunch. Good morning, Sunday! This is a brunch bowl filled with some of my favourite things. . . @wellness_adv aka ‘spice queen’, once gave me some advice for scrambled tofu. Sauté down a little onion, then add garlic, followed shortly after by crumbling in the tofu - I add a level tsp each of cumin and coriander (ground), followed by half a tsp of turmeric. Season with a little seasalt and pepper at the end. . . Serve up with whatever you fancy ❤️ also included and egg, ‘cause brunch and I fancied it. . . Have a cosy day with brunch bowls inside, in this grey weather!

🌟 Supporting children to try new foods🌟 • Being on holiday for the past week & exposed to a range of different foods has reminded me that all of us (including children) have a number of steps involved in exploring & accepting new foods. • I noticed myself going through the following sensory steps to eating when trying these prickly 🍐 for the first time (& cursing the prickles left in my hands after these photos) • The following key factors are important sequential steps involved in tolerance, interaction with, acceptance & eventually consumption of new or unfamiliar food. I talk about these regularly with parents, as breaking down a child’s progress with new foods like this can be very reassuring! • There are actually up to 32 steps to eating but this outlines the 5 key stages (in order): ~ 1. 👀 TOLERATES & LOOKS - am I happy to have it in the same room/in front of me at the table and/or on my plate? - does the shape, colour, size or texture remind me of any familiar foods, or liken to anything? ~ 2. 🍴INTERACT - What happens if it move it around the plate? - What happens when I cut it or push my fork/spoon into it? How is it prepared? - Does it crunch, squash, melt, stay firm? Is the inside the same as the outside? ~ 3. 👃 SMELL - What does it smell like? Fresh/fruity/strong/plain/spicy..etc - Is the smell familiar or similar to anything else I eat? ~ 4. 🖐🏼 TOUCH - How does it feel to touch with my fingers/face/teeth/mouth? Dry/wet/slimy/soft etc? ~ 5. 👅 TASTE - Might initially only be placed at lips/tongue - Usually a small amount tried first - May be ‘spat out’ at this stage of unsure - Progresses to biting & chewing - Final step to eating! • A child (or indeed adult) could choose to reject or accept a food at any stage of these, and move through the steps quickly (or seem to skip steps) or slowly. • Often REPEATED exposure can be required to move through steps • Ps: prickly pear was sweet, juicy & texture was a cross between pear, passion fruit (the seedy bit) & dragon fruit. But when it comes to your fitness goals, this mindset with destroy you, leading to binges and zero progress. Weight loss is never, ever going to be linear. There will be ups, and there will be downs. It’s your ability to recognize these days for what they are — learning and growth opportunities — and realign on your path, which is what will determines your long-term success. Giving up on your weight loss goals because you had one poor day of eating..is like dropping your phone on the ground once, then smashing it on the ground until it's broken. GOOD MORNING VIETNAM: and yep what a morning it was. 11.5hr flight where I slept for about 3, arriving in Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City at 530am. ⠀ .⠀ 🇻🇳 Massive Vietnamese tip - sort your visa before you arrive. We learnt this last time we visited when we waited for hours. Arrived @villasongsaigon ate yet more food and then jumped into bed to beat the jet lag. Not yet sure if that’s a good or a bad thing.
