Even though Ardha Baddha Padmottanasana is part of the Primary Series it’s considered an advanced pose. The depth of flexibility and stability required may be too demanding. The pose can definitely be intense, so it is important to be certain that you are not pushing your body beyond its current level of capability. Injuring yourself is not the goal of yoga! Though it is not required to be able to sit in full Lotus Pose (Padmasana) to do this posture, you will need to incorporate a good amount of hip- and hamstring-opening poses into your regular practice before attempting this pose. Ashtanga primary series - Ardha Baddha Padmottanasana a.k.a. Half bound lotus standing forward fold pose . It’s probably one of my favourite poses as it enables the body to go into a deep stretch mode by opening up the hip and stretching the hamstring. The muscles are under constant pressure and so often store “negative” emotions so when we open up our muscles it is as we tell our bodies to say that it is ok to let go. . Regular practice of this pose strengthens your ability to concentrate, keeping your mind calm and centered in the face of difficulty and imbalance. Relating to the physical process of breathing a Kumbhaka gives more time for gaseous exchange to take place. 2. The spiritual part of kumbhaka is that it creates the grounds for ayama ( expansion) of the breath or dissolution of the breath in the Gaps.
