And whilst the cringeworthy term, ‘nature’s candy’ is descriptively tragic, fruit is a source of sweet tasting whole food that offers micronutrients for overall health, fibre for satiety and water for hydration.⁣ ⁣ As you can see, each fruit has a different macro-nutritional make up. Some have more sugar, others have less. Some have more calories, others have less. And (not displayed here), some have more fibre, whilst others have less. ⁣ ⁣ It is worth noting that sugar extracted from fruit will have the exact same metabolic result as sugar extracted from a snickers. But the combination of sugar and fibre consumed via a whole food (in this case fruit) makes it more likely to satisfy one’s hunger more than food comprising of sugar and minimal fibre. However, one’s attainment of satiety will differ from another’s. ⁣ ⁣ Fruit is a more nutritious, calorie sparse source of energy than confectionary. But it is important to realise that caloric values of any food count towards overall energy balance. “A calorie is a calorie” is an often repeated slogan, and not overeating is definitely an important part of weight loss and maintenance. But rather than focusing on calories alone, focus on quality, those foods that provide our bodies with the nutrients needed to fuel it properly. ⬆️Increase your high-quality food and ⬇️decrease low-quality foods. High-quality foods include unrefined, minimally process foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats and lean, clean sources of protein.🍎🥑🥥🥦🥕🥬 Lower-quality foods include highly processed snack foods, sugar-sweetened beverages, refined (white) grains, refined sugar, fried foods, foods high in saturated and trans fats, and high-glycemic foods foods.🍟🧁🍔🥨 Take a look at what you eat on a daily basis. A real look. Track it somehow. How much high quality food are you actually eating? If not enough, start adding some in. A fruit each day for a snack. A side vegetable or salad at dinner. A smoothie made with Whole Foods. When you start adding in more Whole Foods, you eventually “crowd out” the lower quality foods. Change doesn’t have to be overwhelming but you do need to become aware and then make the decision to start. Remember, eating healthy isn’t an all or nothing deal. You can still enjoy those foods you crowd out (although you may find most of them you don’t want anymore). I certainly do. But it’s what you eat the majority of the time that matters. Folic acid and Vitamin B12 are essential trace nutrients that are necessary for the synthesis of new red blood cells and the repair of damaged #DNA. 1) Methylation is a key process in the #folicacid cycle, where methyl groups are extracted from folic acid. Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is used as a transfer medium to move the methyl groups onto methionine. Methionine then donates its attached methyl groups towards the synthesis of DNA or other #hormones before being converted into homocysteine. This homocysteine can be further de-methylated into cysteine by betaine, or recycled back into methionine. 2) However, certain #genes in the body can be mutated, which produce defective enzymes that can cause issues with the effectiveness or the speed of processing the folic acid or recycling the Vitamin B12. The #MTHFR, MTR and MTRR gene mutations here are key - a change in their activities affect different parts of the cycle but ultimately result in increased blood levels of homocysteine. 3) Excess homocysteine is undesirable because it can be a trigger for excess #inflammation, and we all know that inflammation is a significant factor that is implicated in many degenerative diseases, such as #heartdisease, #Alzheimers, #diabetes and other #womenshealth issues such as a difficult #menopause transition. These symptoms can be manifested from an ineffective cycling of such a small quantity of #micronutrients. It may not be a #diet deficiency. Unfortunately, there is no simple way out of it - especially not if the mutations were hereditary. But the implications of deficiencies can be way higher.
