Advanced Core Exercise ——- In honor of me starting my training sessions with @kanemcgovern (who kicked my birthday today for all who are wondering). I decided to hire him as a way of challenging myself more. I told him my goals were to get stronger, better conditioning, move better in basketball and dribble better. I’ve never received formal one on one training before so this is a new experience for me. Additionally, I did this to push myself outside my comfort zone. I am TERRIBLE at dribbling the basketball and I often feel embarrassed working on it by myself. I messed up a ton today but it’s a work in progress. —— Here is a higher level core exercise I saw Kane doing which I liked. Many people have done stir the pot before but having the feet elevated adds an additional challenge. This is not an exercise I’d recommend until someone demonstrates proper control with easier versions. Disc bulges/herniated discs are common! Most people have them, but remain without symptoms. The main cause is from POOR POSTURE. Sitting in flexion, bending, improper movement, and hunching all day can cause this. They are most common in the lower neck and lower back, since these areas are where we typically bend the most. • A bulge means the jelly-like center of your disc has leaked (from a weak disc) and is pushing through. Sometimes, it can push on the nerve and cause symptoms like numbness, tingling, weakness or pain. It CAN resolve with time, but needs you to avoid prolonged FLEXION (bending) and sloppy posture. Handstands are a powerful and introspective tool. They bridge mind and body, as you must physically focus on squeezing everything AND have a clear mind to stay balanced. This mindfulness practice brings us fully into the present moment. . . Handstands use every part of your body so it’s important to work all the individual parts before we fully invert and balance! Make sure your wrists and shoulders are warm before doing this (if you don’t have a routine, I have two tutorials on just that!) . . Plank hold - 60 seconds. This will help integrate the body, build strength in the legs (squeeze them here!) core, shoulders, and wrists. Make sure elbows are straight and butt is squeezed! . . Hollow rocks (x10) or hollow holds (60 seconds). Start in a hollow position, with only low back on the floor, super tight. Test the tightness by rocking. This is how tight you should be in a handstand!! If your arms or legs move, just hold the hollow body position, this will make your handstand extremely strong and help with the free balance. . . Down dog scapular push-ups - X10. This will teach your shoulders how to extend, which is crucial for the handstand. Make sure shoulders are fully open. It will also build the strength you need to hold yourself up. Remember to keep those arms straight 🔑 . . L-sit variations - (go to @healingmotions last post for a full tutorial on this) . . Body line drill - 60 seconds. The floor doesn’t lie! Press nose, fingers, hips, thighs, and feet into the floor, but lift the stomach and push through the shoulders. This is your handstand.
