Snowy Morning by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, 1846-47. A crouching beauty exhales a cloud of smoke as she passes a long tobacco pipe to her friend, who leans out the window. It is unusual to see smoke depicted in this way in a Japanese print. To the left is a third beauty, dressed warmly against the winter cold, who walks toward a charcoal brazier. P.S.: Please don’t smoke! Today's thesis presentation. I passed the final exam. Feels great to complete this long journey. This wouldn't be possible without the help and support from all my advisors, staff and students from printmaking department. Also my dear friends @julia_toffoli @rodrocha @ta25ma73 who translated and revised the thesis and my wife @karinatakiguti who kept me alive during this process. Available from $33 on our store (link in bio) In February 1921, Hasui began a 6-month-long excursion around western Japan before traveling to the north-west in August of that year. From these trips came sketches for the 22 print series: Souvenirs of Travel, Second Series, of which this print is a part. Amanohashidate - literally "Bridge to Heaven" is one of Japan's three beauty spots. Situated in Wakasa Bay in north-western Kyoto prefecture, it's a two-mile-long, narrow sandbar dotted with gnarled pines. Describing the scene, famed art-historian Narazaki writes: "An unrelenting snow blankets the entire landscape. The illustration of the indigo blue water and the grey clouds is perhaps an effort to create an extremely decorative feel. Amanohashidate has been depicted variously since olden times, but its handling in this work is different again. The printing technique used for the snow is very delicate and skillful. It can be seen as a perfect example of the traditional woodblock printing technique." #japan #japanese #japaneseart #japaneseculture #japanesetraditional #japaneselandscape #japaneselife #japaneseartist #japaneseantique #japaneseaesthetic #japanesehistory #japanesepainting #japanesecraft #ukiyoe #woodblockprint #japanesewoodblockprint #japaneseprint #japaneseprints #japaneseaesthetic #blockprinting #printart #art #wallart #gallerywall #hokusai #wallartdecor #decor

This is a kuchi-e by Watanabe Seitei for a novel titled Tasoya Andon which was published in 1894. Tasoya andon were oil-lit paper lamps placed in the streets of the “comfort districts” of cities. It is a poor quality woodblock print. It was damaged and I had to repair it. It seems to be very rare. #watanabeseitei #kuchie #meijiart #japanesewoodblockprint

Just had to show the edges off the Japanese paper again. Love the silkness! In the catawiki auction now! Lotnr: 32593359. Woodblock print (reprint), Published by Unsodo - Fukuda Suiko 福田翠光 (1895-1973) - "Yomogi to shirozuru" 蓬と白鶴 (Mugwort and White Heron) - ca 1980 Suiko Fukuda, 1895-1973 Japanese artist Suiko Fukuda is from the circle of Kyoto painters and printmakers, where he was born and where he studied Japanese-style painting at the Kyoto School of Fine Arts and Crafts. The artist contributed regularly to Bunten and Teiten. Woodblocks known from Suiko Fukuda are rare and show bird subjects drawn in a realistic and traditional style. Many excellent works remain as males. It is also called “hawk glory”. The prints published this time were produced in 1936 when the woodblocks were burnt down during the war. This is a woodcut that has been reprinted from a print and reprinted (around 1980). You really see the quality from Unsodo as a publisher in this re-print ! They also make all the cherrywood paper them selfs for these prints. #fukudasuiko #whiteheron #japanesewoodblockprint #japanesewoodblock #catawikiasianart #japansehoutsnede #yomogi #yomogitoshirozuru

This is my scan of a woodblock print by Mizuno Toshikata of a bijin published Vol. 23 of Bijutsu Sekai. Twenty-five issues of Bijutsu Sekai 美術世界 (World of Art) were published from December 22, 1890 until the final issue on January 2, 1894. The magazine presented fifteen or more works of well-known contemporary and past master artists to the public in woodblock form in each issue. The woodblocks were either reproductions of paintings in reduced-size or original woodblocks. Published by Shun'yōdō 春陽堂, a Tokyo publishing firm best known for publishing illustrated novels, each issued was edited by the nihonga artist and designer of woodblock prints Watanabe Seitei 渡辺省亭1 (1851-1918), who specialized in kachōga (bird and flower paintings).
