Head to Knee Pose.⠀ ⠀ Forward bending postures involve flexion at the hip and spine and generally there is a lengthening of the posterior chain of the body and shortening and contracting of the anterior chain of the body, there is definitely exceptions to this rule though.⠀ ⠀ Key anatomical movements in this posture include hip flexion, slight hip internal rotation at extended leg, hip external rotation at bent leg and spinal flexion. ⠀ ⠀ Variations could include a strap around the foot keeping the torso more upright, a block under the hips or knee or reclined laying on the back.⠀ ⠀ Forward bends are typically more calming to the nervous system, initiating the parasympathetic nervous system, the rest and digest mechanism. Mentally they can be calming and quieting to the mind and have a more introspective quality. Do something regularly that makes you feel fabulous 👸🧘⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Today I love doing side stretches and forward folds. Rewind to just over a year ago. I started my first #yogateachertraining in January 2018. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A couple of my classmates where -still are- ridiculously flexible yogis. Me? Just barely able to touch my toes.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ "Just like this" one girl said as she moved into an effortless revolved head to knee pose. Grabbing her foot with both hands. Me? At most at a 60° angle, which felt like miles away from ever grabbing or even touching my foot. Looking at her amazingly flexible body with a -big- hint of jealousy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3 things have changed since then:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1. Yoga became a constant in my life. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2. I mind my own mat. I am wherever I need to be on #myyogajourney and enjoying where I am at today.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3. I can grab my foot 😎 and ❤️️ it. Not to show off. But it reminds me of where I've been and the beautiful journey to this moment. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Impressive advances postures are still not my thing. No fancy inversions or arm balances for me. This is head to knee pose or janusirasana. It comes right at end of the. Bikram Yoga sequence, and in this version you actually try to touch the forehead to the knee. That means you can bend the knee if your head isn’t anywhere near it. The effect is to create compression in the front side of the body, which has tremendous benefits for the internal organs and digestive system. • We’re back to our usual schedule from tomorrow, and that means @almaniacolombo is teaching the 12:45pm 60 minute Bikram Yoga class! • Almania is also teaching the Bikram advanced class at the studio this weekend at 1:30pm on Sunday 28th. As well as a quite a few postures you might not have done before, you’ll practise familiar ones like this one too. The posts will give you an insight about how or what I’ve been teaching and the amazing students & experiences that I’ve come across. The next 1000 days will change your & my life completely, let’s #makeeverydaycount. What say?. One leg folded so that the inner thighs is pressed by the foot with the heel to the root of the thighs. Extend the hand up, get the back straight and then lean forward until you reach for the foot. If not, start with the ankle or calf muscles or use a belt😉.
