And yet, twice every year, these hardy beasts cross the dangerous river in search of greener pastures! There’s so much to learn from these simple animals, lessons about survival, life and inevitable death." ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ Please offer congratulations to this awesome shot and visit their gallery for more beautiful art works ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ For a chance to be featured be a friend and follow @African_Portraits Tag your African pictures #african_portraits Write the location and country where the photo was taken. ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ Photo selected by : @livingearthimpressions ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ Thank you very much for your support! ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈

We had been staying in Dus for a few days, each morning & afternoon we would visit with the Kara village perched high on the Omo Rivers banks. Everyone in the village was open & happy for us to walk around, we were invited into huts & there was a general sense of freedom. Each day we were there I kept coming across Parko. His tall lanky frame was hard to miss, his toothless smile always beamed at me but I did not want to take his picture. It was not that I did not want to take his picture, he was happy for me to do so but as I looked at him he reminded me of my Dad. Parko was a lot taller, he was a lot older & he did not have the Australians badge of pride that had been worked on over many years & many beers, but there was something that made me think of my old man. I wanted to communicate this to him but I did not know how. It was not the language barrier, I had still not put my finger on what it was. So I did not take any pictures. The days & visits drew on, Parko was ever present. One day when I had the time I sat by his side. We both crouched in the dirt, a fence made of logs supported our backs providing shade, here I sat with Parko & one of the villagers who spoke English & talked to Parko. The conversation was about his life & culture. As I sat there I realised what it was that reminded me of my old man. I saw Parko almost chewing on his teeth, but he had none. Recently my old man had to say goodbye to his choppers, manufactured ones now helped him with his steaks, but in between meals he had a habit of taking them out & leaving them in his top pocket. When they were out he would mooch around with his mouth, just as Parko did. This revelation & the time I spent with Parko made me now want to take his picture, when he stood I stayed low & took a few shots. Happy with a few frames I asked if Parko would join us back in camp, I still wanted to take more pictures & to talk more. Parko happily agreed & spent the day in camp with us munching watermelon with his toothless gums.
