-Hip Hitch- Sometimes gluteus medius can lose it's ability to stabilise the pelvis when stood on one leg through injury, postural dysfunction or many other factors. A weak glute med may not seem like a big deal, but multiply this by the thousands of steps we take everyday and you can see how it can add up to dysfunction and eventually pain, often resulting in low back pain. Glute med dysfunction can hide in plain sight - often, it's ability to abduct and internally rotate the hip are unaffected and it takes a single stand test to really highlight it's weakness. This is a gluteus medius exercise that targets the muscle's ability to keep the pelvis level when standing on one leg and can be a tricky one to master, especially if the glute med is not functioning properly in the first place. Remember to keep the knee extended but soft and make sure all of the movement comes through the hip. A big amount of sport injuries are caused by lack of motor control. This means that when we run, jump, sprint, squat, everything, our hips and knees and feet go “wherever they want”, causing overload on certain areas and leading to pain and inflammation. ❗️I’m a typical example (as the majority of people) of lack of hip control. This could be caused by gluts weakness or just poor gluts activation. Single leg squat on the bench really shows the issue, and it can be one of many exercises that can help to improve. Looks easy? Try! ❗️Do the exercise in front of a mirror. Keep your back straight, don’t shift your trunk on the side when you squat, keep your knee in line with your hip and foot. Can you do it? 10 Best Exercises To Relieve Lower Back Pain Make sure you warm-up your muscles before you stretch them. You should never bounce during stretching, and all stretches should be slow and gradual. Avoid over-stretching, stretch your muscles until you feel a slight stretch only, and hold each stretch for 20-30 seconds. 1. Lower Tummy Strengthening Lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Breathe in and as you breathe out bring one knee in towards your chest and as you breathe in return the foot to the floor. Repeat this exercise six to eight times on each leg. 2. Deep Abdominal Strengthening Lie on your back, place a small cushion under your head, and bend your knees. Your feet should be hip-distance apart and placed on the floor. Keep your upper body relaxed and your chin gently tucked in. Take a deep breath in, and as you breathe out focus on drawing your belly button in towards your spine. Hold this gentle contraction for 5 to 10 seconds. As you breathe out relax your tummy muscles. This is a slow, gentle tightening so aim to use less than 25% of your maximum strength. Repeat five times. 3. Bird Dog Get onto all fours, make sure your hands are directly under your shoulders, and knees directly under your hips. Your spine is in a neutral position and you need to keep your head in line with your spine. Take a deep breath in and as you breathe out extend one leg and the opposite arm to inline with your spine. You need to keep your spine in a neutral position at all times, so don’t let your lower back sag down. Hold for 5-10 seconds and as you breathe out lower both your leg and arm to the ground. Repeat this exercise eight to twelve times alternating sides. 4. Bridge Lie on your back with knees bent and your feet placed hip-distance apart on the floor. Take a deep breath in and as you breathe out lift your hips off the floor until shoulders hips and knees are in a straight line. As you breathe in lower your hips to the floor. Repeat eight to twelve times. I lost 320 lbs! . ⬆️⬇️⬆️⬇️ For 20 years my weight has fluctuated THAT much! I've been as little as 150 lbs and as heavy as 240 lbs WITHOUT being preggo! Now that I think about it, Its gotta be more than 320. It's crazy to even think about that! It pains me to even write that! I never had control over my body. I allowed genetics and my diagnoses to take over my life. ⬆️⬇️⬆️⬇️ I tried all the fad diets, pills, potions, wraps, all the "support" group classes (I say "support" since we never really got support, just one chick constantly complaining how she can't stop eating peanut butter...AT EVERY MEETING!), the gym, all the at home workouts. One time I ALMOST signed up for prepacked crap food to come to my door 🙈 I was desperate to lose it AND KEEP IT OFF! Nothing worked...because I didnt believe in myself enough. Not because I didn't do the work. I did. Once I reached a goal I would get slammed with another obstacle that I LET get in my way. I gave up fighting for me. I'd throw my hands up and say "F it! I'm done, I'm destined to be fat and in pain FOREVER!" ⬆️⬇️⬆️⬇️ Back in August I had another herniation that reared its ugly head. I was on steroids and man did I blow up! It took 6 weeks to recover from the small task of putting socks on. The plus side, I didnt need another surgery! I still have huge laundry list of medical conditions, but I am not my medical conditions. I just deal with them as they come. I am stronger than I was 20 yrs ago, mentally, emotionally and physically. ⬆️⬇️⬆️⬇️ My ultimate goal in life is to outlive my ancestors and be a brick shit house. There's more to it than that, but I'm not good at expressing my thoughts on paper. A few weeks ago, while in recovery,I heard someone say "I want to live a life where my kids do not need to take care of me in my old age". A light bulb went off...THOSE ARE THE WORDS! THAT'S WHAT I WANT!
