Learning vs being taught. Earlier this week, I went to a fab class by @celestpereirayoga where she had us do the tuck-jump-feet-clap drills in video 1️⃣ and the modified-for-handstand practice (but in a doable way!) sun sal As you see in video 2️⃣. These are things that teachers have tried to teach me before, but firstly Celest explained them in an amazing way, and secondly, I’ve been lucky enough to have a couple of private sessions with @adellbridges recently. She has really helped my confidence upside down on my hands, and said something so smart about including handstand drills in my existing practice (which is not the same as adding something new in if that makes sense). As you guys know, I love a sun sal, so everything just clicked!! And here I am practicing the work I need to do to get to a handstand, by myself, for the first time pretty much ever!! You can BE TAUGHT by amazing teachers all of the live long day, but you will only ever LEARN when you do the work yourself. The best teachers will give you these little tidbits that make the “doing the learning yourself” part manageable and realistic - which is where their magic really lies. But YOU are the one that has the make the magic of learning happen. . This is what we have today: 1️⃣ Tuck-jump-feet-clap drills: notice how much better I do without a cat underneath me 😹 I love how these creatures have so much more trust in me that I do 2️⃣ I literally couldn’t be more excited about this sun sal A modification. Blocks to make the lean & shoulder girdle building strength more doable (so I actually frickin do it!!), then switching chaturanga-updog to chaturanga - press-up - updog for serious 💪💪💪 3️⃣ The first 5min of my practice: loved this warm-up today! 4️⃣ some handstand specific warm-ups and cat-attention 5️⃣+6️⃣ the whole 25min across 2 videos so you can see how it all fits together . There’s also quite a lot of magic in this new red year-of-the-pig @liforme mat, colour me #obsessed and see my stories for more! . #yogaselfpractice #handstandpractice #learningvsteaching #alwaysastudent #yogapractice

Another day, another realization of how far away that full straddle planche is! It can be hard to stay motivated when progress is slow. After a workout of struggling with unassisted holds these banded holds make me feel like a badass. Finishing a workout with a win is something that I learned from @laurameeks. It feels really good. Between August last year and now I have been on and off with practicing my handstands. But i decided just after christmas i was going make more of an effort with my handstands making the training for it abit more structured. As i want to be able to do mutiple of things with my handstands. . In August i was unable to hold my handstand for long, my shoulders and where tight and weak so i was unable to bring them through and i struggled to push them up, also my back is arched and i couldn't engage my core. . The more recent picture my shoulder flexibilty has improved, my stength in my shoulders has increased so i am able to bring my shoulders through and push them up keeping them engaged. I can so keep my core more engaged reducing the arch in my back. But another key thing is my hamstring flexibilty has also improved which is also plays a part in handstands. More importantly i am able to hold my handstand for a period of time😊. It still isnt perfect i know but there is improvements. . ⠀ Anyone on their #QuestForThePress or want to improve their #HandstandPress? 🙋🏼‍♀️ Leg “Plug-In” drills were a game-changer for me... swipe for my drills video ➡️➡️➡️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m aiming for lifting my foot up when I get in and out of #PyramidPose without hands leaving the ground. Slight rounding of the back (Scapular Protraction) as I push the ground away, sucking belly button to spine, engaging the #TransverseAbs (the “OMG I need to pee and there’s no bathroom in sight” muscles), compressing thigh to belly & activating quads (think about the front leg lifting up into your hip sockets)... all that to start getting a feel of weightlessness in the foot. Heyyyy that’s what you’re aiming for in a press! 💡 ⠀ In every vinyasa practice, I incorporate some sort of variation of this drill. In & out of Warrior Poses, lunges, stepping to the top of my mat... trying not to lift my hands up and instead engaging alllll sorts of other muscles! 💪🏻 These are not easy but they do get easier and you might just find some progress on your press journey. Try with blocks or on fingertips... I’ve reignited my relationship with Paul the wall 💕 . When I first started my home practice I always used to practice using the wall. The wall is a great prop for advancing your practice. . It helps with inversions, taking away the fear and giving you support to do different variations. It helps to deepen backbends, it’s a stabiliser in balancing poses, and helps with alignment. . I have a feeling Paul is going to become a regular feature in my upcoming posts. . Also I was thinking about doing a #tutorialtuesday breaking down a pose every week and showing the different stages to achieving it. What do you think? *FOR THOSE WHO STRUGGLE WITH HANDSTAND TUCK* . This is an old video and not the best quality, but I thought I’d repost because some of you have told me that getting up with two legs feels impossible. . #angelasyogatutorials . . 🤸‍♀️Start in chair pose. Bring your feet, knees, and thighs together. Reach your arms up alongside your ears and spread your shoulder blades (protract) apart. Take a deep inhale and as you exhale draw your front ribs down and lift your frontal hip bones up. (those two knob like bones on the front of your hips) You will see my ribs poke out a few times during this video 😆but do your best to keep your ribs knit and belly engaged the entire time. . 🤸‍♀️Take and inhale and as you exhale bring your hands to the floor, keep your arms straight and grip with your fingertips as you tuck your knees towards your chest, your heels towards your bottom and stack your hips over your hands. Inhale as you come back into chair pose and reach your hands up and repeat. . Tips! . 💡In this variation you are using momentum to your full advantage to get up, which is great, but have a wall or a spotter until you get the hang of it. If you are used to looking between your thumbs to find balance dropping your gaze can feel weird at first since your head is no longer acting as a bit of a counterbalance to your hips. You will have to learn to control Balance through your fingertips, pushing through your shoulders and drawing your thighs to your chest. Pushing into your fingertips and knuckles will prevent you from going over so push the ground away hard and grip with your fingers! . . 💡Start slowly shifting the gaze, getting to get comfortable. Start slow and work to eventually bringing your head through if it starts to feel good! . . 💡Do NOT bend your elbows! Push through your hands and shoulders and keep your arms 100% straight the entire time! . . 💡Don’t forget to lift your hands and come back to chair between tucks. Wanna practice handstands with me? Working with your presses? I think puppy press is the easiest one to start with. It actually came to me by a surprise without any practice when I first tried it. But if you're struggling I suggest to use blocks under your feet. Remember to practice both sides(note to self too!) and when you're coming down try to lower the leg really slowly. ✨ I made you some videos how to build strength for that hardest part - getting that first 10 centimetres lift off the ground. I know ig is full of these yoga tips videos but these are drills that worked for me. ✌️ ✨ • toetap hold back against the wall - hold as long as you can! This is actually hard! ✨ • toetaps: try one foot at a time holds, then both feet up one by one, then try if you can lift both feet at the same time & hooold! ✨ • good ol' L-sit - try to stay 10 breaths (use blocks to give you some extra space) and do 1 to 3 rounds 💪🔥 . . . Wide Handstand Whilst Blindfolded With @bose Ear Phones On Loud . . . . When I do handstands and find the balance point I look through my shoulders and arms to find a focus point. That helps me to balance. Being blindfolded and listening to music through my earphones makes balancing a whole lot harder. My sense of sight and hearing is gone and it means I have to be really in tune with my body when I am hardstanding. It forces me to visualise what I am doing and really concentrate. . . . .
