I feel like I’ve developed an alter ego when I’m home alone training handstands. I catch myself yelling “push push” in a different accent as if I was a separate person coaching myself... I guess whatever works right 🤷🏽‍♂️. Playing with different head positions in the tuck. It’s crazy how a simple shift in the gaze can make a posture so much more difficult and can feel way scarier. Most of yoga takes place in the mind.

[MENTAL BARRIERS]: So every time I Handstand on elevates surfaces, especially rocks, the added element of danger messes with my brain’s ability to fully straighten my shoulder 🤷‍♂️ . Here’s a good example from Ibiza shot by @miguel_hand_balance with our squad at the beach today. . Low looks better and my leg lines are starting to straighten out over time, but the one key joint I’ve been working on for years, the shoulder, seems to revert back to safety zone when the fear of falling kicks in 🤣 . I have a pike press from blocks, a bit wonky but I got it floating, 2. my pike press from parallettes as my prop, and 3. my drills for mastering pike press: just practice repetitive lifting, because the first part is the hardest. And I also worked half-pike press which is also in my story. Back at you with three of my favorite handstand drills on swipe. As always, they come in progressional waves to articulate further strength of the shoulder girdle, upper back and core. Treat them like a bus route: get off on the stop that works for you. . Begin in Vajrasana, with the pedicures flush to the mat. Base the palms just outside of the upper thighs and ensure that your shoulders and externally rotating and that you’ve steered the eye of the elbow to face forward with the forearms drawing towards the midline. Keeping your knees bent with the shoe lace side of the foot down, inhale as you press into the palms to round your back and lift your shins. . In the second, keep that same engagement and alignment but work to straighten your legs and take your chin to your chest. Repeat each variation at least 5 times and attempt to hold the shape on the last round for 5 solid rounds of breath. . In the third, add on by trying to press up (by pressing down through the hands and tops of the feet) into a controlled tuck handstand. . Regularly incorporate these three drills and I promise you will notice a change in your handstand practice. . P.S. Split leg Kick Up I recently had a question in my online Handstand Club (weekly classes and community) about the split leg kick up. The focus of the class was alignment, in particular the overhead and rib position. The question was whether or not the split leg kick could be more of a full split. Now this position (that you can see in my second attempt) is often easier to find balance in. But it is harder to maintain a good torso position. It isn't bad, it is just harder to achieve the thing that was the focus of the class. The split leg kick up with the leg staying vertical allows good a good overhead position, encouraging elevation. It feels easy (easier) to keep your ribs down. And it helps you maintain a slight butt tuck. The full split handstand will typically lead to a banana back. Here it is harder to elevated your shoulders and get into full shoulder flexion. It is also more work to keep your ribs down. Note in this demo I was trying as hard as possible to maintain a good overhead position in the split. When you are working on your alignment make sure that the way you perform the skill is actually helping you. If the goal was to balance then maybe a full split might be a better option. #handstandclub #splitlegkickup #handstandalignment #iamabanana

Once those cues start to sink in and be learnt by the body it just gets easier and easier. I played with tying a few things together from the challenge. Crow to press, and back, and toe tap. *PRESS HANDSTAND DRILL* . . #angelasyogatutorials . . Reposting one of my fave drills of all time. Naturally as you get stronger you should work this one in the middle of the room! . . .🙋Warm up your wrists before doing this! . . . 🙌Place a bolster against the wall. As seen in the video, line your fingertips up in line with the edge of the bolster. Any closer to the wall and it will be more challenging to get up. This distance makes pressing fairly doable. . 🙌Place your feet on a large Swiss ball. The bigger the ball the easier this will be. To challenge yourself you smaller and smaller balls. . . 🙌Squeeze your inner thighs together. Point your toes and firm your other shins in. Think of having a zipper going from your ankles up to the very tops of your inner thighs. . . 🙌Inhale as you send the ball away from you and exhale as you draw the ball closer by lifting your belly and sending your hips towards the wall behind you. . . 🙌The sensation of pressing is such a deep ab engagement that it feels something like getting punched in the ribs. Or a suctioning feeling up and underneath your ribcage. Really odd, but also exciting! 🔥💪🙌 . . 🙌Once that feels comfortable lift on leg and bring it straight up. Use your abs to keep your hips from shifting as you do this. Switch sides. . . 🙌Last but not least try lifting both legs up at once. . . Practice with me on Playbook.
