So, my pecs are by far my weakest muscles — as you can see on the dumbbell bench press I’m working with 20 lb dumbbells on higher reps, 25 lb dumbbells on lower reps. I really neglected training my chest the first few months of lifting, for multiple reasons. For one I had a different split with less hours, but mainly I didn’t understand the necessity of it and even feared it somewhat, particularly the vulnerable position of having heavy weight above me as I was lying down. But the more I studied exercise science, the more I realized chest training was a necessity, and now I hit chest hard 2x/week. Most women neglect training upper body, especially chest, though often for different reasons than I did. Usually it’s due to ignorance, misinformation, irrational fears of becoming huge, not understanding the large biological sex differences that exist in muscle building potential, etc. Many women, afraid to “get big” or “get manly,” only do lower body work; sometimes I see women come in, do a few sets of squats, and leave. All that does is make you very quadricep dominant, which many women already are, and which can create muscular imbalances. So ladies if you’re afraid to hit your upper body hard, reevaluate. Remember that strong ≠ big. And consider what it will do in the long term when you can squat 200+ lbs, but your back is so weak you can’t do a single pull up and your chest is so weak you can’t do a single push up. You’re creating a dangerous imbalance where one end of your body is much, much stronger than the other half, and yes this can lead to injuries. Lastly, if you really hate training an area or you’re really weak in an area, that’s the place you should be training the MOST. One of the worst ways to train is to only train muscle groups you enjoy training or those which you’re good at. There’s a reason the whole “gym bro” with a big upper body and skinny legs is a meme. Guys and girls alike stick with what they know, what they like, and what they’re comfortable with. Regardless of your gender identity or lack thereof, lifting should be DIFFICULT. If you aren’t feeling immensely challenged and immensely uncomfortable, you’re not working hard enough.

so i took a few weeks away from the gym and my typical routine..it was so nice to live in the moment & not focus so heavily on my weight/appearance. A lot of the times we find ourselves caught up in how we look that we don’t stop to think about how we FEEL. I felt I needed a mental/physical break and I am so glad that I made that decision. Today was my first day back as a PF member & as always I felt SOO at home. I know I haven’t been the best at staying active, so I am going to do my very best to keep up! xoxo ❣️

You’ve heard about HIIT, but have you heard about LISS? What is it? Low Intensity Steady State How do you do it? Many ways! My favorite is a challenging incline on the treadmill with a decent pace What are the benefits? ✔️A great warmup! Gets the heart pumping and blood circulating before my lifts. ✔️Paired with HIIT/normal training, it can help increase fat burn. (IT IS NOT A CURE ALL, no workout can fix consistently bad nutrition). ✔️Good for recovery. Rough workout week? LISS tends to be low impact, it’s a great way to still workout without all the typical-cardio stress. ✔️Easily maintainable. Great for beginners! Most people don’t start out able to run 2 miles.
