A daily Tarot practice is a beautiful and surefire way to get in touch with your deepest self, with the voices and longings in your heart that are the hardest to hear. But while the archetypes of the Tarot come to us as pure, unadulterated energies, the lens that we view them through is warped. Our experience of the cards is akin to our experience of the world- colored by our culture, our upbringing, our inherited traumas and prejudices. Working with the Tarot over time helps us to unravel many of these stories and biases, but what of the most deeply seated bias of them all—our own personality? • • The Enneagram is a system for describing the structure of your personality type. Through 9 archetypes of human motivations, we identify this ‘warped lens’ through which we’re seeing everything around us, including ourselves. So, as we begin to learn about ourselves through the Enneagram, our relationship with the Tarot deepens and takes on much more nuance. Knowing your core wound, your defense mechanism, what ‘intelligence center’ you lead from, wether you orient yourself towards the past, future, or present (and that’s all just on the shallow end), can shift our interpretation of the cards and allow us to approach them at once more personally, and more impersonally. It’s all about knowing your bias. • • I, for instance, as a 4, have a tendency towards melancholy and am oriented towards the past. I am very focused on what’s missing in my life, and I can grow nostalgic over things that were never that great to begin with. So, 5 of Cups, for instance, can personally call me out for this tendency and ask me to acknowledge what I have, not what I’ve lost. However, for a type 7, who tries their best to avoid uncomfortable emotions and wants to move on from pain as quickly as possible, 5 of Cups can be an invitation to sit with their grief. Similar flavor for an Enneagram 3, who fervently denies their own failures. 5 of Cups can ask them to look at the cups they’ve spilled. • • I’ll be going through more of the cards and how they might show up differently for us depending on our type. Strength shows up in so many ways. Physical, emotional, mental, spiritual. Ideally, we should seek to balance them all. You can force outer strength through ‘hard core’ workouts but you can’t do that for inner strength. That shit takes the longest to develop. On the days where it cracks, it can be empowering to breathe through a strong physical pose/activity.
