You may have noticed a lack of training post recently. To be honest, my body has been struggling lately. We often judge our successfulness on "being busy" and don't get me wrong, I absolutely love it, I'm so grateful for every show I have been booked on and teaching job, I wouldn't change it for the world. But when being busy depends on your body, it can take it's toll. Aerial hoop, silks, trapeze and contortion all cause different strains and stresses on my body and teaching too. I am often not fully warm and jump up and demonstrate something and always on the good side because it feels more natural. So, when it comes to my own training, I'm exhausted, feeling uncreative and my body hurts. So, it becomes maintenance rather than creating anything and I have deemed that too boring to post. I'm not looking for sympathy, simply, this is where I'm at right now. So here it is, my boring, maintenance post! . #reallife #boring #maintainance #training #contortion #contortionistofig #aerialistsofig #splits #oversplit #backbendlove #backbend #backbendchallenge #yogaposes #yoga #lookafteryourself #circusact #circustraining #circusartist #inspire #circusaroundtheworld #circusinternational #bendygirl #flexibility #flexibilitytraining #cirqueduinsta #instafit #instadaily #tuesdaymotivation #london #instapic

Many athletes, especially young ones push through back pain, accepting this as normal. Truth is that whilst aches from the day before training are expected, consistent back pain is not. . When developing flexibility in the lower back, performers can develop what is known as a ‘hinge’ point. This is when a few segments of the lower back appear to bend much more than the others, mostly commonly L4-S1, with the next most common at T12-L1. Stress fractures typically frequently occur at L5/S1. . Hinge points are not inherently bad or dangerous or mean that someone is going to automatically develop a back injury. Many elite level athletes can utilise these hinge points effectively, however, an ideal way of extending is preferred by spreading out the extension over a variety of different levels in a global extension pattern. By utilising more parts of the body this theoretically helps to take excessive strain off any one point. . Pain may result from the area having to take an excessive amount of force that is does not have the capacity to handle. I.e. a gymnast/dancer/contortionist/yogi/acrobat/aerialist etc ... who lacks mobility in the upper spine or lacks the control/strength to use their available range will most likely make up for the motion in their lower spine during this skill, creating excessive strain over time. . If you are an instructor who is worried about a students back pain then it is important to direct them towards a medical profession. Too often are we seeing young individuals who push through their back pain in order to continue performing or competing. With that being said it is important for individuals to take full responsibility for their pain and acknowledge it sooner rather than later, after all, a few months off is better than a life without the sport we love 💗 .
