With so many free resources out there, and so many talented practitioners willing to share their knowledge, it’s possible for anyone to become proficient at a skill like the handstand to a relatively high degree. But as I’ve learnt by myself this year, taking all these lessons, drills and cues and putting them into disciplined practice is something separate. Recently I’ve been focusing on really honing in the straightest bodyline I can when in the standard handstand position. It’s such an odd sensation orientating yourself whilst inverted, the only way I can describe it to someone who doesn’t handstand is it’s like you suddenly had to swap your dominant side for everything, so have to relearn the simplest task like writing or kicking a ball with your non-dominant side. The hardest thing I’ve found is engaging posterior pelvic tilt whilst inverted. I just couldn’t workout how to fire my glutes and keep my legs in line, so kept piking. Only in the last few weeks have I familiarised myself with the sensation, and it’s paid off massively in getting a beautiful straight line. When you do hit that sweet-spot though, and you can feel your weight focussed on you palms, your body tension is solid, and stillness hits you both physically and mentally, it’s magic. You feel like your floating. With a little more work on my overhead extension and continuing to perfect my posterior pelvic tilt, I trust that someday in the near future I will be able to achieve a perfect line! It's a good way to end our final days of 2019's training sessions. I'll be on my own for the next couple of weeks and I'm terrified of losing what he's taught me and how he's pushed me. What is the perfect balance? Just as much as I want to look badass on instgram and in the gym, I realize the importance of leaving ego behind and care how I actually FEEL in my body. Honestly, it doesn’t really matter what you can do in the gym (unless it’s your main profession) if after the session you are in pain. Of course being motivated and push the limits is great (and the only way to actually improve) but balance is the key. Slow down, try to build connection to your muscles. It is really important to create that motor paths, and train nervous system to access more muscle fibers. It is even more important if you had any injury. Use warm ups as that switch. Train hard but smart. Unless you are a circus artist, training 2 hours might be a bit too much on nervous system. Whatever you worked - stretch it out, lengthen whatever was shortened. Build the balance. Stay extra 5 min after your workout to breathe, decompress and relax your body. Switch to the healing mode, there is no need to stay in “alert” or hyper mode the whole day! If I stretch at least 5 min after my workout or spend time breathing, I never feel tight afterwards. Sometimes I use a concept of Gymnastic bodies and add stretches as part of my workout - as most of the skills I do require good flexibility, it works perfect together!
