Heyo! Here’s my first Back-to-School Kids Yoga post. I hope you can find this information and these posts useful & in some way feel a connection. Of course, they’re unique, but I have a feeling I’m not alone on this crazy train 🚂. . Day 1: The Post School Dread! . The thing that stresses this kid out more than anything is feeling rushed into something. It wasn’t until last year that I realized this. Everyday after school, we followed a strict regime: homework, reading, lunches for the next day. It worked for my older girls, why not for the man-child as well? The kid would ZONE out. Sometimes I would look at his eyes and there was literally nothing. Not matter how many times I would snap my fingers, add games, or incentives to get him to come back to earth and at least pick his pencil up, there were always tears, battles, and bad grades! Yes, what he could not accomplish at home was starting to bleed into his performance in class. . One day, I’d had it. I went upstairs to release my stress by getting on my mat. The kid found me & laid down next to me and we just laid there together & breathed in our #suptabaddhakonasana (butterfly pose, laying down). We looked up at the ceiling and talked. After 5 min, he told me he was ready to do his homework. And it worked. I realized that day...he needs a post-school break. He can’t be rushed into it & that I was the cause of his stress. . He doesn’t do this everyday...but he knows it’s ALWAYS an option. He’s found some sort of way to disconnect but reconnect when he’s on his mat. And it’s always Supta Baddhakonasana. His favorite post school stress relaxer. . Human bodies tend to store stress in two different areas: hips and shoulders. Is it any surprise my son loves this pose then? The opening the hips helps alleviate the tension of being on the feet and/or chair all day, while being on the floor gives the shoulders a break from carrying the head’s weight (adding # lbs from just storing 8 hrs of information). As much as this is a physical release, it’s also serves as an energy release too: balancing many of the body’s chakras & pacifying the Vata dosha - which I’ll discuss later!!! .
