Good morning my friends! So many of you ask me how to become more flexible and how to start... I always answer being consistent and tenacious in your practice, whichever your preferred you style is! But how? What to do? Save time for your daily morning practice and try these postures. Probably you won’t be able to do all of these just the first day but it will get better each day you practice and the mornings will be brighter ✨☀️... of course there are many more, we’ll add them in the future! Below some notes for each one... have a safe and meaningful practice 🙏🏻❤️ . 1. grab your feet, place the heels as close as possible to the perineum, extend spine, press with elbows against knees. To make it more intense, add a forward fold. 2. Both hips are grounded, knees are one over the other in a vertical line... rest your hands on feet soles. If it gets easy you can add a forward fold 3. press with elbows against the knees and extend the spine (this can be done dinamically... I’ll tell you in a future post) 4. Keep spine straight and don’t bounce in this asana. If it’s difficult to hold, place your hands on the floor. 5. Keep hips facing forward and square, don’t rotate...The more you keep the tibia parallel to mat’s edge the more challenging it is 6. place legs apart until it’s comfortable. Legs are straight and their back rest on the floor. then fold forward... spine is elongated ... don’t rush to the floor. Stop on forearm first, then put on the floor your forehead, then chin. . Hold each one for 20-30 sec while breathing deeply. Then keep prolonging the time in the asanas. . . This pose is one of the most common postures practice in Yin Yoga. In this style of yoga, the poses are held for longer periods of time (3 to 5 minutes) in order to target deeper tissues in the body. In this case, Butterfly stretches the lower spine and groin without requiring loose hamstrings; it’s good for the kidneys and prostate gland; highly recommended for people suffering from urinary problems; removes heaviness in the testicles and regulates periods, helps ovaries function properly, and makes childbirth easier. To practice it: Sit with the soles of the feet touching together and lean forward. If you start with the feet closer to the groin, the groin muscles are stretched more. If you start with the feet further from the groin, the lower spine is stretched more. You can hold your head up or you can support it with a bolster or a yoga block. Hold the pose 3-5 minutes. Come out slowly and stay still to feel the effects in the lower back. Practice this pose at the end of your yoga practice, or after a long day of sitting or walking too much. Hi my friends! Who’s not in love with middle splits? 🤤 good things take time, patience and consistency... we all know that! So being that said I’m sharing with you how I prepare for it... for me it’s still a work in progress! I start with butterfly pose, engaging glutei to push the knees down. Adding a twist and pushing with hands adds a bit more to the stretch. Then the frog pose 😍 this feels rather intense so make sure you’re well warmed up. Relaxing at the wall waiting for gravity to do its job feels great. I personally don’t like to add weights in this position. This works for me pretty well 😊 If you want to give it a try please make sure you properly warm up ad stop when you feel uncomfortable. Proceed with reasonable peace and respect your current limits. I was initially introduced to the yogic style of movement as a young dancer in the mid 80s during warmups for dance class & rehearsals. This approach to yoga continued well into college as I trained to audition for The Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre with a group of its alumni in the late 90s. 👯 I practiced the stretches off & on, but never developed a true yoga practice of my own or found a mentor/teacher to study with. Then, I met the renowned contemporary modern dancer & choreographer, Kiha Lee in 2006. She sternly provided me with my official yoga education in two semesters of a disciplined & thorough curriculum of the B.K.S. Iyengar style of yoga that I took to compliment the various dance classes I’d enrolled in @lavalleycollege. What an education! 🥰 After working alongside her in various dance productions, I fell in love with the focus on alignment and full engagement of the senses with each asana of the Iyengar technique. Rest. . . Do the shorter days have you feeling tired or slower lately? Receiving smaller amounts of natural daylight actually impacts our Circadian rhythms and the part of our brain that makes us feel alert. So less sunlight = more sleepy, cozy vibes in our bodies. It's kind of brilliant really - the winter season is chemically forcing our bodies to slow down a little and encouraging rest. The earth and the trees rest - why shouldn't we? I'm sure you all know how draining it can feel to be living at a fast go-go-go pace for too long. And unfortunately in the west, there is often a huge amount of guilt associated with taking a break, or slowing down. But you know what? Our bodies just weren't designed to live that way. . If we were living in harmony with the seasons, the Winter would be the time to rest, nourish your body and spirit, and just ruminate on your creative ideas. Then, in the Spring, you will feel well rested and inspired to take action. 💪🏼 . So what if this season you gave into that natural impulse to rest? It could be drinking a little less coffee, going to sleep an hour earlier, or adding a Yin or Restorative practice to your routine. .
