Double tap if you have tight hamstrings 😩 - These 5 poses are to help you lengthen into the hamstrings which can relieve tension in places like the lower back and hips. - 1. Downward Dog - The icon of yoga! Great for the hamstrings and calves, also strengthens the shoulders and upper back. Hold this pose for as long as feels comfortable. 2. Half Split - If you need to take a cushion or a blanket to place under the back knee, take it. Hold this for between 30sec - 1 min before switching to the other side 3. Pyramid - Keep a gentle bend into the front knee so not to lock out the knee. Or if really tight in the hamstring bend further into the front knee 4. Forward fold - Hinge from the hips, lead with the chest towards the shins, belly button draws towards the fronts of the thighs 5. Reclined hamstring stretch - Grab a strap, towel or t-shirt. It is paradoxically the most commonly practiced pose yet the pose that perhaps receives the least biomechanical attention by teachers. How many times in a vinyasa class do you find yourself rather unconsciously flowing into and out of Dog pose with little time actually spent refining the internal engagements of this asana? . In order to help people unlock the mysteries of this frequently practiced yet infrequently taught pose, I have recently seen a proliferation of “Down Dog Tutorials”. But I have yet to see one aimed at biomechanical integrity rather than just the achievement of the external form of the pose (i.e. getting the heels down, the head to the floor, and the chest toward the legs). Here’s my intervention. I hope it helps you and your students! . Most tutorials give a lot of instructions that results in severe rotator cuff stress (by pressing the chest to the ground and subsequently dumping the humorous bones towards the floor in a dangerous internal spiral which can be seen in a student’s flattened out armpits) and hamstring attachment and psoas aggravation (by tucking the tail bone, rounding the spine, and forcing the heels to the floor). The “opening” that is felt is an unhealthy torquing of the joints that is not actually lengthening muscles. . So: *grab the blocks . *bend the knees and allow heels to lift. Slowly work heels towards floor without tucking tail. . *untuck your tailbone and lift core . *knit your floating ribs in and keep them in! . *lift the heads of the arm bones up and hollow armpits, slowly soften heart down between strong and integrated arm bones and shoulder blades without dumping into shoulders or lifting floating ribs . . *reach your spine long in two directions. . . . 🙌🏼HOW TO PRACTICE HEADSTAND🙌🏼 . This is my favorite inversion ✨ Here are some tips & tricks for mastering this pose in your practice! . 👍🏼Remember, this is an advanced pose. If you’re nervous to practice in an open room, you can try this against a wall . ✨Be patient! For a loooong time, all I could do was walk my hips up and barely lift one leg. BUT with consistent practice, I got better & better & eventually was able to lift both legs! . 💖Be mindful of putting too much weight into your head/neck. Use the arms & shoulders to support the body. Think of the head just being there to help balance! . 😜Have fun!! I can’t explain how amazing my time has been thus far. Really long days, cold as shit, and my body is exhausted, but my mind and spirit is SO inspired, and empowered....Stepping into your personal power is a very scary yet magical experience, and I’m welcoming it all! . The first Sisters of Yoga Wellness Social was ABSOLUTELY beautiful!!! More than I could’ve ever imagined, so I’m feeling prettyyy high right now. You can also clasp hands, or use a strap between the hands. What’s more important is understanding how to energetically ground and rise in the body. _____ Correct ✅: * Ground all corners of feet into the floor, especially the big toe and heels. * The most mind blowing concept here is that the heels actually press into the floor and towards hips, instead of away from hips. This engages the hamstrings and creates more space throughout the spine. * Widen across chest and press shoulders down into floor. When the shoulders open and press into floor, the heart and sternum is lifted from the support of the upper back and shoulders. * Lengthen neck by keeping shoulders depressed, and keep gaze forward * Outer hips (i.e. glutes) engage but don’t grip • Feet are parallel to one another ____ Incorrect ❌: * The lift of the bridge is happening from the low back, and the goal is to bend the entire spine and not just depend on the low back. * The feet are not grounded and the knees are externally rotating, which puts a lot of pressure on the SI and low back * Keep your head forward and lengthen neck ____ @actionjacquelyn Thanks for sharing!💛💛💛 Outfit by @aloyoga

Coming to the end of week 3 on the YTT. We’ve covered so much and the confidence shift in these soon to be yoga teachers has been fantastic to see. Here I am mid sentence 😂 talking about beginners. ⠀ ⠀ The group did a round robin beginners class and teaching to the group one pose each. Day 3 of 4am 🧘‍♀️ SO today my mind tried to talk me out of my new routine. Instead of giving in I used Mel Robbins’ 5 second rule, got myself up and completed the session. If anyone is looking for a good PD book (or audio book), I HIGHLY recommend this one right here. It’s life changing, no joke! I also had a little help from my zen blend of oils today. Sorry that the bottles are so beat up but these two essential oils are in my pocket all day every day!! The Bergamot and Vetiver blend quickly made me a believer in the power of essential oils. The citrusy scent of bergamot combined with the earthly scent of vetiver has a way of calming the mind and relaxing the body. Before discovering this combo, I had never experienced a remedy that released my tensions with such ease. Today I’m grateful for both of these tools that continue to help me reach my goals. Sie hat mir von ihrer Vergangenheit erzählt und wie sie damals mit ihrem Körper umging.♥️ Viele Menschen tun sich nichts Gutes oder achten auf ihren Körper, weil sie denken, sie sind es selbst nicht wert. Vielmehr wird nur die Hülle immer weiter rausgeputzt. Man schminkt sich, geht shoppen, betreibt exzessiven Sport. Aber nur, um nach außen hin „schön“ zu wirken. Was im Inneren passiert, das ist in dem Moment egal und wird zurückgedrängt. Ja man verbietet sich quasi teilweise selbst, so zu sein wie man wirklich ist und traut sich nicht, nach innen zu schauen. 😤 Für mich der falsche Ansatz 🛑 ✋🏻 Selbstfürsorge beginnt nicht im Außen, sondern im Innen! Natürlich ist es völlig okay, sich zu schminken, wenn man das zusätzlich tut für sich selbst. Aber niemals für andere! . . 🙅🏼‍♀️ Hör auf, ständig deine äußere Hülle zu polieren und fang endlich an, wirklich in dich hineinzuhören. Genau da beginnt Selfcare. Da beginnt Selbstliebe. Und sei Dir immer bewusst: Du bist es wert! A year passed - already - yet it feels like yesterday that @alex_tla and I met many other passionate yogis for breakfast. Our new family for the coming month and beyond. After breakfast we walked up a short and steep path towards the teacher Shala where we not only witnessed but participated in this beautiful welcoming ritual, a Puja. . Before it started I didn’t really have an expectation beforehand as I simply had no idea what would happen. Those weeks were full of asana study, anatomy, philosophy, Ayurveda, chakras, kriyas, mudras, and so much more. This teacher training was definitely no holiday - it was better: learning, growth, total extension and total relaxation. It was tough and full filling. . I thank my fellow yogis, my teachers, Simon, Sarita, and all the other staff, not to forget the dogs, for this forever lasting and special experience. . Team Laurien & Alex is the beautiful fruit, born out of the experience described above and our martial arts journey. Right now we have over 25 yogis attending our classes, and over 45 martial artists. It’s bliss 👌💪 . You may hate me while you do em, but I promise you’ll thank me once you’re finished & seeing results! 😍😍 . 🔥CLASSIC PUSH-UP: If you really want to build some strength, start here. Do as many as you can, pause when you need & you can ALWAYS drop the knees for extra support!🙋🏼‍♀️ ✨Aim for 1-3 sets of 30 reps . 🔥DOWN DOG DIVE: These are fire! Start in Down Dog and dive down into an Upward Dog ✨Aim for 1-3 sets of 5-10 reps . 🔥SLOW CHATURAGA: Oh boy 😅 start in plank and lower for the count of 5. Drop the knees if you need. ✨Aim for 1-3 sets of 5-10 reps . 🔥DOWNDOG > DOLPHIN: Start in Downward Dog and lower to forearms (Dolphin Pose) This is excellent for building strength for forearm stand! ✨Aim for 1-3 sets of 5-10 reps . 🔥SHOULDER TAPS: Start in plank pose. Tap hand to opposite shoulder! Great for building core strength as well ✨Aim for 1-3 sets of 30 reps (15 on each side!) .
